Third Favorite Moment: Another Clue from a Red Bath
When it comes to releasing secrets and clues, this show has great pacing. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
This is one of those cases where I’m not sure I can interpret what I saw. The scene happened a little past the ⅓ point in this episode. Karyl saw Kaiser Insight standing on a balcony, so the catgirl rushed to meeting her. Seeing that her princess wasn’t there, Karyl went searching for her.
She found her. Maybe. At least it looked like her. She was bathing in a red, thick liquid. It clung to her skin. Was it blood? Wine? It looked too thick to be wine, but I wasn’t sure. Whatever it was, Kaiser luxuriated in it as Karyl ducked behind a pillar to listen. Seems she didn’t want to rush in while royalty was bathing.
Then Kaiser said something very, very interesting. She said (08:23), “You’ve done it again, Metamorregnant. The level of depth is entirely different.”
Is Kaiser aware of the re-dive aspect of this timeline? For that matter, was the second Kaiser, standing fully clothed and out of sight, aware? Were they both Kaiser?
What’s so cool about this moment is that a) I have no idea what it means and b) I have enough confidence in the writers that I am sure I will eventually know. And be impressed!
Second Favorite Moment: Yuuki’s Resolve
Yuuki doesn’t remember everything. But he doesn’t have to. He’s still who he is, and he will do what he needs to do. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
What must it be like for Yuuki? He has to know he’s different from the people around him. Even under the best, supportive circumstances, people who have disabilities are aware of how they appear to others. For example, he had to know that his speech patterns are different.
On top of that, he now recalls more of what he had been like. He has memories of some of the people he fought beside. Remember when he got hit by Foggy’s beam in episode 7? Near the very end of that episode, Kokkoro saw Yuuki gazing up at the tower suspended in the sky. She knew something was wrong, but she didn’t know what. She couldn’t know he was trying to come to terms with his memories, and what they implied about who he was.
He’s still struggling with that. In this episode, Labyrista found him sitting on the top of one of the city’s walls.
“I used to have companions,” he said (09:38). “Why did I forget about them?”
She could not answer him in that moment. But the part that really hit me came next, when he summed up what had to be the thing that hurt him the most.
“I couldn’t protect them,” he said. But then, thinking of Karyl, and Kokkoro, and Pecorine, he stood up and added (10:38), “I will keep them safe, no matter what.”
When it comes down to it, all we have is our resolve and what strength we can bring to the table. Yuuki impressed me with his resolve. I have a feeling we’re going to see what he can do about it soon.
Favorite Moment: Pecorine’s Hopeful Decision
It’s a big moment for Pecorine. I think it’s a big moment for the series, too. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Pecorine aches to restore her place with her parents and her people. Her memories of the relationships she used to have are a constant background of pain for her. It’s so bad that she had hesitated to let herself get too close to even the other members of the Gourmet Guild.
She broke down at the end of the previous season and confided in Kokkoro, who had faithfully kept the secret so far. As an aside, I can’t say enough about the high quality of Kokkoro’s character! It’s no wonder Karyl suggested she would be the mom of the Gourmet Guild.
In this episode, her heart warmed by Kokkoro’s gesture of inviting the entire village to help them harvest rice, and her spirit buoyed at the sight of everyone enjoying a shared meal, Pecorine came to a realization.
Sitting with Kokkoro, off to the side of the party, Pecorine broke down in tears, saying “I never knew… I never knew a flavor this happy existed…” Kokkoro, sensitive soul that she is, couldn’t hold back her own tears. It was adorable how she tried to hide it by taking a big bite of onigiri.
After a moment of looking at all of her friends, Pecorine said (21:55), “I’m going to tell Karyl and Yuuki that I’m Eustiana.”
This is a big moment for her – a powerful statement of trust. Then why does her resolve fill me with foreboding?
