Anime Feminist

Rise of the Villainess: How the reborn bad girls of otome games are defying shoujo stereotypes

You know, I really don’t like stereotypes. I know that there are worse things in the world. I know that singling out stereotypes as something I dislike says a lot about the comfortable life I lead. Stressful, yes. But I have a job to be stressed about. So, not liking stereotypes is like an annoying indication of privilege. Or something. It’s late, and I’m tired, so please pretend the preceding sentences were witty repartee.

Anyway, stereotypes. They’re like unearned shortcuts. They’re also boring, and when I watch anime, I don’t want to be bored. Also, I like Katarina Claes, so “defying shoujo stereotypes” in the title and Katarina’s picture as the featured image for Kyle T.’s post on Anime Feminist attracted my attention. And I’m glad it did! The post talks about a trend that was obvious to me only after reading this post. Cool trend, too! See if it was more obvious to you!

Hanime on Anime

Hanime on Analysis: Why I Love Mahito

Did you see JUJUTSU KAISEN? If so, then I suspect you’ll remember Mahito. Talk about a memorable villain! To this day, I’m still ticked off about what Mahito did to Junpei Yoshino. Seriously, it’s like I’m carrying a grudge or something. So when I saw this title by Hanime on Anime on the site Hanime on Anime, my reaction was somewhere between being aghast and incredulous. And a little multi-F WTF. And you know I’m reacting strongly when I get to the third F (WTFFF). Then I read the post. And I thought about it. Then I thought about it some more. And dang it, but Hanime on Anime made a lot of good points! I still don’t like Mahito did. But considering the character from Hanime on Anime’s perspective deepened my appreciation of Mahito’s role within the narrative. See if you experience any revelations reading the article!

Honey’s Anime

Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru (My Dress-Up Darling) Review – Cosplay, Fanservice, And Wholesome Relationships

I really enjoyed My Dress-Up Darling. I tried to capture why in my reviews, and by and large, I think I got my point across. But there are some downsides of episodic reviews as opposed to whole-series reviews. You can see what I mean by checking out this post by Harry on the site Honey’s Anime. By looking at the series as a whole, Harry succinctly captured what made the series so enjoyable. See if the post captures what you liked about the series!

I Drink and Watch Anime

Spy x Family episode 2 – True Romance

This might be one of the best anime seasons ever. Okay, I’m being 25% more facetious than usual, but there’s a grain of truth in my hyperbole: This season, we have not one, but two fully adult women who are amazing. This season, I don’t have to pretend that an anime cast a college student as Marin Kitagawa. Nope! I can, without reproach, simply enjoy every moment that Mirellia Q Melromarc is on screen! Yes, it’s the little things…

I said two, didn’t I? Well, that’s because in the second episode of SPY x FAMILY, we got to meet Yor Forger, the Thorn Princess, herself. I could say something unclear like “she’s a freaking goddess,” but that doesn’t tell you much, does it? In general, I mean, because it probably says more about me than I’d like. That’s why I liked this post from Irina on her site I Drink and Watch Anime. She had a lot to say about the whole episode, and as much as I enjoyed those parts, I particularly liked her observations and reactions to Yor. Plus, the title reminded me of that Lady Gaga video. See what you think!

The Magic Planet

Let’s Watch HEALER GIRL Episode 3 – Cleanup, Run Run Run

I try to celebrate anime. The stories and characters I sometimes see in anime are a more effective candle against the darkness than a lot of options folks propose to me. Though at some point I should upgrade to wind-powered LED lights or something. Candles are way too easy to blow out! And another metaphor goes off the rails…

Within the context of this site that celebrates anime, within this series of my posts, I’m try to find and celebrate posts from other writers. So when I come across a passage like this one, it really gets my hopes up: “If you’re averse to just straight-up fangirling, this is probably not a column you’ll enjoy. But if you aren’t, well, welcome to the cult.” And you know what? Jane the Anime Witch’s post on her site The Magic Planet more than lived up to my hopes. The post is as delightful to read as its subject series, Healer Girl, has been to watch. See if the post touches on what you like about Healer Girl!
