5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2023 Week 07

Welcome to My 5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2023 Week 07!

Every week, I visit about 315 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. The ani-blogging community writes a lot of those posts. I hope this list helps you find some of them!

You can see a list of the sites I check here: Massive List of Sites!

Confessions of an Overage Otaku

CHARACTER ANALYSIS: RYUJI TAKUSA

In my 5 favorite posts post from last week (that phrasing isn’t awkward or anything!), I mentioned that Toradora is one of only six series that I rated a perfect 10 on My Anime List (MAL). I’ll eventually say why when I induct it into the Caw of Fame. But until then, let me present an insight that’s likely more lucid than mine: The Overage Otaku just wrote a piece about Ryuji on his site Confessions of an Overage Otaku. Compelling characters are critical to a show’s impact, and Toradora in general and Ryuji in particular prove it. If you want to appreciate Toradora even more, head on over to see what The Overage Otaku has to say!

Terrible Anime Challenge: Lycoris Recoil and Remarks on Parfaits With A Side of Politics

For me, Lycoris Recoil came out of nowhere. The main characters, Chisato and Takina, won me over right away. I mean, how could I not be delighted by Chisato’s appreciative whoops of a warehouse’s windows being blown out by machine gun fire — by a gun Takina was firing? That’s just good stuff.

But as the season wore on, I’d read reviews that seemed to me to be about a different show. I didn’t say much at the time, because my focus was on enjoying the series and celebrating what I liked about it. Then I came across this post by infinitezenith on the site The Infinite Zenith that put the whole conversation into context — and at the same time, helped me enjoy the series even more. And that’s saying a lot, because I already enjoyed it a lot! And no, I didn’t choose to celebrate this post because infinitezenith included a link to one of my posts! Though, thanks for that!

Merlin’s Musings

Romance of the Raven Consort

I remember reviewing Raven of the Inner Palace. I hate all forms aristocracy. I consider them to be a blight on humanity. Yet, I found the characters in this show so compelling that I set that aside to enjoy the show’s vibe. Also, I looked forward to comments like those left by Merlin from Merlin’s Musings. The comments helped me see the show from other angles, which meant they helped me appreciate the show even more.

So I was excited to see that Merlin had posted a review of the show on Merlin’s Musings! I had hoped the review would delve into the relationship between the Raven Consort and the Emperor. I had hoped it would talk about the politics and the background characters. And guess what? It did all of that and more! It’s a review befitting the series it covered. I hope it helps you enjoy the series all over again, just like it did for me!

Let’s Chat: Soul Eater NOT should not have haters

I watched Soul Eater and liked it so much that I asked my wife to watch the dub with me. To this day, it’s the only anime series she got into almost as much as I did. So, the series is special to me. Years ago, I saw that another series come out — a series that was in the same world. It was called Soul Eater NOT!. I watched it, and for the first several episodes, I had no idea how I felt about it. My favorite characters from the original were nowhere to be seen. It was the same world, but it was a very, very (did I mention “very?”) different take on it.

It was only after I convinced myself that it wasn’t the original, and that it wasn’t designed to be the original, that I relaxed into enjoying it. My own expectations had prevented me from having fun with it, and that was a shame. That’s why I liked this review by Kayden on mosaicboy’s Interest Nook. It approached the series from the right perspective from the very start. It helped me remember what I liked about the series, and it helped me reinforce the reasons I had for convincing myself to view the series from the right perspective. I kind of wish I’d read this post before I watched NOT! See if you agree.

My Dress Up Darling’s Gojo Wakana and Marin Kitagawa: An Authentic Attraction, a Mutual Respect

Do you know what my favorite aspect of My Dress Up Darling was? Marin Kitagawa. She was my favorite part of the show. And I don’t mean that in a “wink wink nudge nudge” sort of way. I mean as a character, she managed to transcend tropes to become her own person. But if I’m honest, it wasn’t her character in isolation. That’s exactly why I so enjoyed this post by Dewbond from the site Shallow Dives in Anime. This post offers spot-on insights about why Marin is so attractive — in context! I know I say this a lot, but this post helped me enjoy a favorite series even more. Talk about a great way to spend a Friday evening! See if you agree!

  1. This and your blog directory will be so useful in finding blogs. It’s been really hard to find them as there’s a lot of spam blogs out there. Thanks!

    1. Thanks! And yeah, there are a lot of spam/AI-generated click bait sites out there. I try to weed them out in the Massive List of Anime Site, but I suspect one or two might have slipped in. Some of the AI sites are put together in clever ways.

Good luck with Fun Makes Right!
