5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2023 Week 35

Welcome to My 5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2023 Week 35!

Every week, I visit over 290 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These five posts are my favorites for the week! I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did!

You can see a list of the sites I check here: Massive List of Sites!

Arum Journal

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses Episode 9 Review – Mutual Feelings

I’m about to say something that could be misconstrued, so let me say up front: if you operate a website and your primary goal is revenue, don’t have any problem with it. I’ll go so far as to say I support your goals — and I hope you succeed. But I’ve noticed a trend among some of those sites to publish a lot of very impersonal reviews. After reading the review, I have no sense that I communicated with another human. An AI might as well have written the content. That’s not the kind of content I enjoy.

I did not get that sense at all when reading the review that ecargmura wrote on the site Arum Journal. The review was of episode 9 of The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses. Ecargmura not only related the contents of the episode, but related it to their life in an accessible and compelling way. By the time I finished reading the post, I had a real sense that a human had communicated their perspective to me — and that’s exactly what I’m looking for in a review. See if you get the same sense!

Get More XP

Bastard!! Heavy Metal Dark Fantasy Season One Review: It’s So Over the Top it’s like Watching Macho Man Randy Savage Surf Down a Mountain while Riding a Unicorn.

I haven’t had a chance to watch Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy. I remember seeing it was coming out, but my watch calendar was already packed, and then I lost track of it. But this review by Getmorexp on the site Get More XP made me think that maybe I made a mistake. Why? Well, just read that title! Any title that can honestly include Macho Man Randy Savage, mountain surfing, and unicorn riding, and then justify their use, well… I don’t know what to say, except that on this day, my backlog grew. Again. Go see if you enjoy this review as much as I did!

I Drink and Watch Anime

ZOM 100 – Episode 6

There’s a lot to like in an of Irina’s reviews on her site I Drink and Watch Anime. Her whimsy, great character insights, and demystifying complex topics are only a few of them. This review reminded me of something else she’s good at — pointing out when an episode is realistic! Zom 100 did something that few zombie series do. Can you guess what it is? Go see if you guessed right!

Pretty Cure: I love the writing!

Pretty Cure is one of those franchises I keep trying to convince myself to watch, and I keep failing. I can’t get my expectations aligned correctly to accept what it is. That bothered me before. After reading this post by pkemner on the site Paul Kemner.com, it bothers me even more! Pkemner builds a strong case that not only is Pretty Cure visually appealing. It’s well-written! Enough so that I should probably watch it to understand its approach. So, back onto my backlist goes! See if pkemner talks about the aspects of the show that you enjoy!

Wrong Every Time

Land of the Lustrous – Episode 11

I like scenes like the battle of the battle of the Pelennor Fields in The Lord of the Rings. Éowyn’s stand against the Witch-King of Angmar felt particularly epic. I bring this up because Bobduh, on the site Wrong Every Time, struck the same tone with me when he described Bort standing over the fallen Diamond in Land of the Lustrous’ eleventh episode. Yes. I just said that Bobduh’s post read to me very much like something from J.R.R. Tolkien. And I don’t make that statement lightly! Go see what I mean!

  1. Thinking about the Precure post more, I added a couple paragraphs at the end, one being:

“So there you have it- a mix of Togusatsu battles and craziness, shojo manga emotion, slice-of-life, a bit of Cute Girls Doing Cute Things, and even some Iyashikei, all rolled into one!”

Togusatsu/Shojo is mentioned a lot, but the mixed genre elements take it beyond a simple monster-of-the-week setup to vary the pace. They can cut the relaxing episodes if there’s another disaster or they get hacked, but they’re definitely part of the story.

They went off the rails with Delicious Party, with a long string of low-stakes episodes. The last couple episodes switched from “I can’t eat my favorite food anymore, and don’t remember it” to having all the food on earth disappear. Everyone will die unless they totally submit to the bad guy.

  2. Omg, this is my first time being featured in one of your posts! I’m happy that you enjoyed my review!

I always try to do my best to write my reviews where it’s not too positive, but also not too negative. I won’t guarantee that I can write another review like this, but I’m always doing my best to write in the way I want to.

    1. I did enjoy it — very much!

“I always try to do my best to write my reviews where it’s not too positive, but also not too negative. I won’t guarantee that I can write another review like this, but I’m always doing my best to write in the way I want to.”

I think that’s a good description of what I saw — and it’s that authenticity that appealed to me!
