5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2024 Week 31

Every week, I visit over 255 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in animeย or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

You can see a list of the sites I check here: Massive List of Sites!

Hanime on Anime

Character of the Month: Kafka Hibano

I’ve heard that a recent convert is more enthusiastic, and when it comes to Kaiju No. 8, I rather think that description fits me! I didn’t watch the show as it aired. I waited. I wasn’t a believer! But after watching the first episode, I binged it all the way to the end. It might have had a lot to do with the main character, Kafka Hibino. There are a lot of reasons why, and I’d love to explain them. But I don’t have to, because I came across this post by Hanime on Anime on the site of the same name. The review was as insightful as it was enjoyable to read — which is to say, lots! If you liked the show at all, or if Kafka Hibino appealed to you, I think you’ll really enjoy this post.

Phoenix Talks Pop Culture Japan

Aomori Represent~! Grandpa and Grandma are Young Again (anime review)

Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again is already in my backlog. Otherwise, this post by
RisefromAshes on the site Phoenix Talks Pop Culture Japan would have convinced me to add it. The reason is simple, yet profound: as I read this post, I could actually feel the cares of the world receding. We all have a lot going on; some, more than others. That why I look forward to my Friday night anime blog excursion so I can look for posts like this that remind me it’s not all doom-and-gloom out there. There are still bright spots, like this post. Go see if you see what I mean!

The Review Heap

Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou)

We already mentioned Kaiju No. 8 once in this post, and the emphasis was on the main character. The show had a lot more going for it than “just” that (though many series would probably commit various crimes to have an MC that appealing). What that “lot” contains is another topic I’d love to explore, but again, I don’t have to! That’s because ashleycapes just took care of it on the site The Review Heap. I particularly liked ashleycapes’ discussion of exactly what genre this show should be in, as well as how the plot handled key elements. Go see if ashleycapes talked about what you most enjoyed in the series!

Shallow Dives in Anime

The Summer of Love VI with Attack on Titan: The Marley Arc!

I haven’t finished Attack on Titan yet. That wasn’t a schedule thing; it was a deliberate choice. I’d watched the whole thing since season 1. I wanted to see how it ended. But the hype was too much. That sort of thing doesn’t affect me very often. But Attack on Titan was just that big. So, it was with a great deal of interest that I saw the title for Dewbond’s recent post on Shallow Dives in Anime. Part of avoiding doom-and-gloom is reading honest opinions — and by that, I mean opinions unaffected by hype or what appears to be anime community expectations. Even if the opinion is “negative,” if it’s honest, I’d prefer to read over a forced-positive review. In that spirit, you might be surprised at Dewbond’s opinion of this stretch of Attack on Titan episodes!

Xenodude’s Scribbles

Revue Starlight โ€“ Ep. 12 (Series Finale)

This might be some kind of record — I made it through this 5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts post without adding anything to my backlog! But that was due to, in part, the shows already being in my backlog. Case in point: Revue Starlight. That said, my rule of thumb still applies: if a review makes me want to watch a show (or bump it up in priority!), then I consider the review a success. That’s just what Xenodude’s review on Xenodude’s Scribbles did — make me bump up the show’s priority. So, success! The whole review convinced me, but the final paragraph really stood out. But don’t skip ahead — read all of it! It’s absolutely worth the time!
