Every week, I visit over 240 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known: Art and Identity in Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night
I’ve been heads-down writing and editing now since about October for a new trilogy I’m working on. Well, that and starting another trilogy, but my point is that I’ve been in “do” mode and not “reflect” mode. That means I’ve been thinking about tropes and characters and presentation. I haven’t been reflecting on what fiction is really about — the human condition. I’ll get around to adjusting my focus, but until I do, I can rely on posts like this one by Alex Henderson on the site The Afictionado to remind me that without soul, without a representation of the human condition, fiction’s flat. It’s less impactful. Just read how Alex Henderson talks about Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night and how it relates to their life. That’s how I hope readers will talk about my books some day!

Spy x Family CODE: White : Commercial Anime Daring To Dream
How important is the movie Spy x Family CODE: White to the franchise? That the kind of question I’ve been thinking about as I plan a new trilogy (sorry for talking about my writing a lot this week — I’m kinda focused on it right now). Knowing how a given work fits into the larger canon is important, as Piro will tell you in this post on the site Animehouse. I enjoyed reading Piro’s insights about Loid, Yor, and Anya — as well as their relationships to each other. Now I want to rewatch the series — and, of course, this movie!

Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian – 10
Are you enjoying Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian? I am. I’m still surprised. My only impression of the series before it aired was its key art, which made me reflect that the artist obviously takes their responsibility of drawing Alya’s legs seriously. I admire craftsmanship. Yes, the show has very attractive art, but even as far as episode ten, it’s still much more than that. That’s what I liked about FlareKnight’s post on Anime Evo. I thoroughly enjoyed his discussion of how Alya acted on her date with Masachika Kuze. And, of course, it goes without saying FlareKnight has keen insights about Yuki Suou, which is a prerequisite for my taking a review of this show seriously!

Merlin’s Musings
The Top Ten Anime Moments That Most Shocked Me
When I saw the title Merlin had given this post on Merlin’s Musings, I had mixed feelings. I’m a snob when it comes to shocking moments, so I was on one hand intrigued by the title, and on the other worried that Merlin might pick some moments I would find somewhat less than shocking. I need not have worried. I got to number 8 and realized the post was on solid ground. Then I got to number 6 and had to admit: he, indeed, picked honestly shocking moments. Moment 6 was powerful and sobering and intimate all at once. And the list just got more impactful from there. See if Merlin mentioned any of the anime moments you found most shocking!

Wrong Every Time
Toradora! – Episode 12
Toradora is among my all-time favorite anime series. That means a) I’m always on the lookout for posts about it and b) I’m really, really critical of any posts I find. I’m familiar with Bobduh’s work on Wrong Every Time, so I had high hopes when I saw the title. The post was everything I had hoped for — and more. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the whole series; I can’t count how many times I’ve seen this episode in particular. It’s powerful, it’s intricate, and I thought I knew it backward and forward. I’m happy to say that Bobduh helped me catch some additional nuances. Not only that, but the post helped me appreciate the episode’s themes. And now I want to start rewatching Toradora!
