Cultists and Tigers and Bards – Oh My! Re: Zero Season 3 Episode 1 Review
Well, that was an interesting way to kick off a season! Especially the last few minutes… Did you see the opener for Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3? Then you know what I mean! That alone is a lot to talk about, but 7mononoke’s post on Anime Rants went beyond just that to talk about the show’s world and some of its implications. 7mononoke’s discussion of how the show portrays many of its female characters struck a note with me. The post struck a perfect balance between clearly describing the problem and placing it in its context. The issues were problematic, but they did not define the show, or its genre — or its viewers. That’s exactly the kind of discussion I find moves the conversation forward! See if you agree!

[Analysis] Captain Tylor: Luck is a Skill
Some anime appeals to me at first glance. Some, not so much. That’s the case with Irresponsible Captain Tylor. It’s not that the series doesn’t appeal to me; it just didn’t capture my attention. This review by
pswediting on The Anime View, though, did capture my attention. In particular, it brought up Star Trek and Captain Kirk in a way that completely changed my opinion of Captain Tylor. Now, I want to see what he’s about! I love reading posts like this that help me find cool and interesting things that I’ve missed! I hope this helps you find one, too — or celebrate a series you rarely see celebrated!

DAN DA DAN Episode 1: Virtual Insanity
Dandadan was nowhere on my radar. Its key art didn’t even entice me to read the synopsis. I’m saying this as someone who understands the danger of making too rapid a decision with too little data. Looks like I only thought I understood it, because based on Piro’s review on Animehouse, this show is insane in all the right ways. Art? Story? Characters? Insane. Or maybe it would be better to say wildly inventive? If you saw the first episode, you probably know what Piro’s getting at. I don’t — yet! But I’m about to fix that oversight. While I’m doing that, please see if you enjoy Piro’s perspective!

The Power of Three: Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell holds a special place in my mental shrine to “Artistic Skills to Which I Aspire If I Ever Grow the Hell Up.” I love science fiction, or maybe it’s more accurate to say I love fiction that explores who we can be. Science fiction seems best at that.
Ghost in the Shell occupies one of the places of honor in that shrine, and it doesn’t have many competitors. Am I being hyperbolic? If anything, I’m understating. The movie and series hit on so many levels that I feel like I’m channeling Marin Kitagawa when I say “I can’t even.” Don’t believe me? Well, as proof, may I offer this post by The Overage Otaku on Confessions of an Overage Otaku?
Trying to express everything this show does right would be a massive work, but The Overage Otaku focuses on one aspect: the implementation of a simple trope. But in the hands of Masamune Shirow, it’s just the compressed literary starting point where he goes, “You see where this starts, right? The trope got you up to speed? Okay, then! Hang on!” And he does cool shit with it. He weaves themes and meanings that at once astonish and comfort. I’m not putting it well, but that’s okay. The Overage Otaku works his usual you-won’t-know-it’s-complex-because-he-presents-it-so-well thing. Please, go see what I mean!

As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World (Season One) – Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru
Speaking of shows that flew completely under my radar, may I introduce you to As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World? The title alone made me ignore it, but I’m pretty sure if I’d looked closely at the key art, I’d’ve seen a kid as a main character and would have ignored it anyway. I like kids well enough, but when it comes to anime, I don’t know — they can be really annoying, you know? Well, based on Lynn’s review on The Otaku Author, my prejudices made me miss out. Yet again. But, hey, all’s well, because now I know why this series might be something I’d enjoy! So onto the backlog it goes!

Cool — thanks!
I think I’m also going to add to my blog post about the serious mistranslation from Crunchyroll when it made it look like Subaru was talking about himself suffering when it should have been about Wilhelm and Reinhard as some people are thinking that Subaru’s character regressed.
I also should probably note that Subaru has always been abrasive to those he doesn’t like, much like how he was scowling and remarking over and over how he didn’t like Julius when Julius was trying to make amends with him in Season 1 and when he made fun of Roswaal’s makeup in Season 2.
Thus, it doesn’t surprise me that Subaru cannot accept that Julius is treating him as if he’s worthy of respect as he still has serious self-esteem issues, which Subaru’s talk with Wilhelm confirmed. If this were the real world, Subaru would probably need years of therapy to get over his issues.
This is just a suggestion — so take it for what it’s worth — but as a reader, I’d prefer you write another post about it. A separate post. It’s hard for me to know when a post has been updated; it’s a lot easier to know when a new post has been published.
Just a suggestion!
TCrow, Blue Box is my favourite of the non-sequel, reboot, or spin-off shows of this season. I very much enjoyed the character writing and the way whole episode was set up. Chinatsu, the female lead, is hardworking AND resourceful as she’s most likely the reason for the twist at the end of the episode. I expect from the first episode that it’ll do romance better than most Weekly Shounen Jump titles.
Yeah, Dan Da Dan appears wildly inventive and was a standout over this last week, but sometimes a wholesome sports romance can be just what the doctor ordered.
I haven’t seen Blue Box yet, but I’m hearing good things about it. Romance + sports sounds like it could be a lot of fun!

There’s a user named KakoeiSbi, who gives a rough translation (doesn’t seem fluent in English) in the comments section.
For this season, all the Breaktime episodes will be released on the day after the corresponding regular episode airs.
Cool! Glad to know it’s up, and glad to know their intent this season! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing. I only picked Appraisal Skill to make up the numbers as I too have an aversion to child protagonists. However, I also love it when a show surprises me by being much better than I expected, and there always seems to be a couple each season.
You’re welcome! Glad you shared it — it gave me a new entry for my backlog!
