5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2024 Week 49

Every week, I visit over 235 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

You can see a list of the sites I check here: Massive List of Sites!

The Up-side to Anime Apocalypses!

We’ve seen so many lists that I think it’s a challenge to come up with new, compelling ideas. But momomanamu, on the site Anime Hanabi, just proved more than up to the task! Momomanamu came up with a positive spin on a decidedly negative concept: the apocalypse! Specifically, momomanamu proves that even in such a dark, world-ending situation, there’s beauty to be had. My favorite? The first one in momomanamu’s list. Absolutely a classic! See if your favorite apocalypse is listed!

Triple Plot: Gosick

I have esoteric taste in anime. I can throw myself into series like Freezing and give it an 8 on MAL; I can turn around and do the same thing with Kyousougiga. Crazy, huh? But I’m okay with it. It’s because I learned at an early age there is no objective measure of quality when it comes to fiction. I used to edit the high school literary magazine. Helped a friend start it, in fact. A teacher took it over (there’s a story there, but for another time), and she took issue with me analyzing all of the fiction we published. My goal? Improve my writing, and improve the other writers’ work, too. I evaluated categories like plot, character, description, pacing — all the standard stuff.

She told me to stop. I argued that these things helped me and the other writers. But, apparently, I had graded one story “below” another when she preferred the lower-rated story. I tried to understand her reasoning; she had none. And then it dawned on my little, immature, high school brain: there’s no measure. There’s no yardstick. Whoever’s in power makes the call. Everyone likes what they like; the ones in power can just like it louder.

This is the long say to say I really enjoyed Gosick. I enjoyed it for the reasons that The Overage Otaku, on the site Confessions of an Overage Otaku, laid out as the show’s strengths. I enjoyed it in spite of the valid criticisms that The Overage Otaku brought to light — in spite of me agreeing with those criticisms. For me, I like something based on how it makes me feel. The Overage Otaku captured how Gosick did that, and after the week I’ve had, it was a welcome mini-vacation into my memories of the show! See if it’s as pleasant for you!

Merlin’s Musings

Doctor Elise Saves Everyone

Have I been living under a rock? I’m a little alarmed at the number of series I’ve completed missed. As in, I had no idea they existed. And I go through LiveChart every season — extensively! Well, apparently not extensive enough, because Merlin, on Merlin’s Musings, just reviewed a series I’ve never heard of: Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp. And wouldn’t you know it? Merlin makes it sound like it’d be a lot of fun to watch! Well, my anime acuity might be lacking, but reviews like this are a great way to compensate. If you saw the show, I’m sure Merlin talked about what you liked about it. And if not? Then head over and prepare to expand your back log!

10 Anime Girls Who Actually Wear Different Outfits

I just talked about how hard it is to come up with interesting new lists. It is hard — but despite that, we have another example this week! YumDeku, on the site MyAnimeGo, just proved more intelligent than I am because I noticed the topic for this list, but it never occurred to me to turn it into a list! When I watched Golden Time (years ago), there was something I really liked about the show, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. About fifteen episodes in, it finally hit me: Kouko Kaga didn’t wear the same outfit in every episode! I thought that was innovative and cool. YumDeku has rounded up other shows where that happened, too. How many of the ten can you guess?

Dandadan Episode 9 Recap and Review

Dandadan used to worry me. I enjoyed the early episode so much that I was afraid it would crash and burn. But five episodes became six, then seven, and now we’re up to nine. Far from crashing and burning, it seems to be picking up speed! When I came across this review by Jiraiyan on the site Otaku Orbit, I was exited to see how the series from Jiraiyan’s perspective. What a fun trek through the episode! And kudos to Jiraiyan for screen caps. They really caught the episode’s spirit! See if you agree!

  1. Yokohama Shopping Log/Quiet Country Cafe is my favorite end-of-the-world. So mysterious, so chill.
Humanity Has Declined would be fun/weird/dangerous depending on the fairies.
Girls’ Last Tour is a good series too.

    1. I haven’t seen Yokohama Shopping Log/Quiet Country Cafe. I’ll have to check it out!

Humanity Has Declined, though, was, well, I was going to say hilarious, but it was also disturbing and perplexing, too. Great OP and ED, too!

  2. Yay, thank you for the shout out! Oh and I also really liked the analysis the Over Age Otaku did on Gosick. I really liked that series, but I have to admit it did have it’s issues. I like how Over Age Otaku compared it’s three part story to Cowboy Bebop. I honestly had never thought the two were similar, but after it was pointed out, it actually kind of does have the same story beats. And it’s funny, I know that Cowboy Bebop has it’s issues, but I really like the series regardless just like with Gosick. You’re right, stories don’t necessarily need to be perfect to be enjoyable.

    1. I’ve been reading and studying writing for most of my life, and I still learn stuff when I real The Overage Otaku’s stuff!
