Reading Violet Evergarden as an autistic woman

I am concerned about the journey my country has embarked on. I’m not going to get into the particulars, but here’s an example. I know that physical and mental ailments are a problem. So much so that they require a concerted, focused effort to find cures and, where a cure is impossible, treatments. I mean, we want folks to live productive and fulfilling lives, right? One that’s as free from pain and misery as possible. At least, that’s what I think. Those who are even now gleefully ripping apart the instruments of those efforts, like the National Institute of Health, obviously have a different take. But I’m going to tell it like I see it.

Since we’re busily dismantling the institutions that we built to help us get ahead of diseases, it falls to us as individuals to do what we can. Diseases are going to hit most of us, probably multiple times in our lives. So it’s important we cultivate an understanding of how to approach cures or treatments. That’s why I like this post by Kelsey Nichols on the site Anime Feminist. Kelsey Nichols explores autism through the lens of Violet Evergarden, which an a series I hold in very high regard. Kelsey Nichols’ post is full of insights that contribute to our shared understanding of the condition and how it impacts women in particular. Understanding is important — and this post helps quite a lot in that regard!

Orb: On the Movement of the Earth Episode 20 Review – Glorified Suicide

If you’ve read many of my posts, you probably know that I have a dual bachelors degree in English and Theology (for the latter, my concentrations were in moral systematic theology, Christology, and eschatology). It’ll come as no surprise, then, that shows like Orb: On the Movements of the Earth would attract my attention. In this case, I consciously decided not to watch it. There’s a part of me that becomes quite uncharitable when I remember the part of the Catholic Church’s history where they murdered people for trying to understand the world. Left a bit of a blotch on her reputation, you might say. I just couldn’t deal with watching a fictional account of those time.

My deep, abiding rage is bad enough at the anti-science proclivities of a certain political party in the US.

Anyway, 7mononoke’s review of Orb on the site Anime Rants caught my attention this week, mostly because of the large number of keen insights and vivid descriptions of character moments. But what sold me on the post was this quote: “Personally, I don’t care much about the utility of a belief at the end of the day. I care more whether or not it’s actually true.” After all’s said and done, that’s the only question that matters. It doesn’t matter if a concept makes this or that part of life easier if it’s false! I wish more folks would get that! But fortunately for us, 7mononoke does. Go see what else 7mononoke has to say about the episode!

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3 Episode 10 Review

Saying there’s a lot going on in the 10th episode of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3 is a bit of an understatement. Not only do we have to contend with a ton of exciting action on multiple fronts; not only do we have to deal with the implications of clashing themes; we also have to deal with the histories of the individual characters! Good thing we have posts like this one from DoubleSama on the site DoubleSama to helps us tease apart the details. I particularly liked DoubleSama’s conjecture on the various points of interest. See if you agree!

A Princess’s PAIN! RE:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 3 Episode 10 [Video Review]

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3’s 10th episode also earned the attention of Sinh on the site Otaku Sinh. This review takes a look at the episode with a focus on Priscilla. That suited me just fine. It’s not like I dislike Emilia, and I admit I have a soft spot for Anastasia. But in terms of… well, you know what? Instead of me explaining why I think Priscilla is a good character, let me direct you to Otaku Sinh’s post instead. Turns out he perfectly captured my perspective on the matter! There’s also a link to his YouTube video treatment of the topic. So, it’s a multimedia treat!

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V episodes 12 and 13

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V had been a very interesting season, hasn’t it? At first, I didn’t think I’d enjoy the focus on Freya, but the show surprised me. In fact, it’s among my favorite seasons for the series, and that’s saying a lot. Now, this world has a ton of lore, and even though I’ve studied many of the mythologies in the show, sometimes I get lost. That’s why I was happy to see this review by Theron, on the site USA Anime. Theron demonstrates a mastery of the subject matter, as well as a way to deliver commentary in an entertaining way. After reading this post, I learned enough to enjoy the episode even more. See if you have a similar experience!

    1. I enjoyed reading the detailed analysis.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the lack of empathy. Your point that both extremes of the political perspective are guilty of encouraging that lack is spot on. One think I see few people talking about is throw non-democratic governments and their intelligence services encourage us to adopt that “us vs. them” mentality.

It’s gotten to the point where I can see a Facebook post and pretty much know it’s intended to divide, and is therefore _probably_ a deliberate plant. It’s not certain, of course, because let’s face it: trolls come from all nationalities.

But if you’re an authoritarian regime on a budget, hiring a bank of propagandists to sow distrust and dissension on social media is a lot less expensive than fielding a top-notch military.

Heck, your enemy even provided the infrastructure (Facebook, etc.).

      1. Yeah, a lot of authoritarian regimes, such as those from China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, definitely have paid troll farms whose mandate is to sow distrust and dissension. China goes to ridiculous lengths with even paid propagandists showing up on a Pokemon battle simulator ’cause it considers every outlet in which people gather fair game in the information war.

  1. TCrow, Episode 61 of Re:Zero wasn’t stuffed with content, so I should have my write-up ready tomorrow night, which is way earlier than I usually do.

      1. Whenever you decide to retire, make sure it’s when it makes financial sense to do so given the rising cost of living (exacerbated by Trump’s tariffs and countries pulling investment out of the US due to tariffs) and the shaky condition of the U.S.’s funding for Social Security. Retiring comfortably is harder than ever these days.

        1. Believe me, that’s a huge concern for me right now. It doesn’t really matter how much any of us have saved for retirement — if the loss of faith in the USA + unchecked monopolies (which aren’t even getting any attention right now) + tariffs + the assault on the farming and construction work forces aren’t enough to tank the markets (and any investments in those markets), the assault on social security is a massive concern.

Well, fortunately, I’m skilled in primitive weapons, so if I have to survive off the land (squirrels do, in fact, taste just like chicken) I can. But I’d really prefer not to.

  2. TCrow, I reanalyzed a portion of Re:Zero Breaktime Season 3 Episodes 5 and 6 as there had been something bothering me for 4 months.

Glad to see you also enjoyed 7mononoke’s review of Episode 20 of Orb. When Re:Zero went on break in November, I told you I was considering covering 1 series although I noted I wasn’t sure if I’d go through with it, and it was Orb that I had been considering. I felt my lack of faith gave me a bit of a blind spot, and that’s why I decided to not cover it even though I found the content of that series so powerful.

    1. Interesting theories! I really have no idea what’s going on with Al, so I can’t weigh in. But I like how you’re approaching the question.

A lack of faith might be the perfect mindset from which to approach Orb! Maybe I should put it another way: approaching a work of insightful fiction from the perspective of personal honesty is flat out perfect.

Please let me know what you think!
