Mahou Tsukai Precure!! MIRAI DAYS – 07

I’ve tried several times to watch the Pre Cure series, and I have to say: they’re not for me. Mostly. Though I come across an occasional episode that sounds intriguing, and I’m part way through at least one of the series. Okay, I admit I’m being indecisive about the franchise. Post like this one by FlareKnight on the site Anime Evo about the series Witchy Pretty Cure! don’t make things any easier. After reading this review, I want to give the franchise another shot! Which’ll probably happen at some point. I think. While I make up my mind, you can go do something productive and go read this review.

Black Blood Brothers: Episode 3!

I wonder if developing nostalgia is part of the process of aging in an fandom. There are times I find myself longing for the “good old days of anime.” Which for me, mean either Speed Racer (yes, I’m that old) or Shikabane Hime: Aka. I’ve read other reviewers feel nostalgic for other periods, which makes me suspect it’s a duration-of-fan sort of thing. Anyway, reading this post by momomanamu on the site Anime Hanabi got me thinking along these lines with the review of Black Blood Brothers, which came out the year after Shikabane Hime. I think it’s healthy and fun to look back at older series sometimes! It gives us a sense of context. See if momomanamu’s post triggers your sense of nostalgia!

The Archdemon’s Dilemma Leads to a Happy Life

Do you know what genreI think is, hands down, the most difficult to write for? It’s not drama. It’s not science fiction. It’s not science fiction – military science fiction – fleet fiction (though the way I write it, you’d think it’s impossible!). No, it’s comedy. Comedy is hard to get right. That’s why I enjoyed reading this post by Merlin on the site Merlin’s Musings: he described the series An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride in such a way that made me suspect I’d think it was funny. Writing comedy is hard, but so is describing comedy, and this post makes it look easy. Go see what I mean!

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V episode 14

The series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V is under appreciated. For one thing, the show has a deep understanding of mythologies of many of the world’s civilizations. Second, the show’s themes are thought-provoking and delivered in a low-key way. Third, the characters are just too much fun. Heck, I could go on for hours about the awesomeness that is Ryuu.

All that said, I’ve read a lot of good reviews of this show by a lot of good reviewers. Each has given an interesting perspective. Among those, I really appreciate Theron’s perspective as seen through his reviews on USA Anime. Theron is able to pull in details of the various mythologies to deepen my understanding of each episode. In other words, I walk away from each of his DanMachi reviews with a better appreciation of the episode. Go see if you have a similar experience!

My Dress-Up Darling – Review

Remember I said how comedy writing is hard? Well, I happen to have watched a series (yes, I know — shocking!) that is an example of a comedy that worked on multiple levels: My Dress-Up Darling. Yes, I know that My Anime List classified it as a Romance, but I’d argue it’s a fantastic comedy with romantic elements. Or maybe a romance with comedic elements. Whatever its classification, I was fortunate enough this week to find a reviewer who really understood the series: Xenodude from Xenodude’s Scribbles. Reading this review was a great way to remember what I loved about the series. Go see if Xenodude talked about what you love in My Dress-Up Darling!

  1. TCrow, remember when I mentioned in my first write-up for Re:Zero that the highlight of the premiere of Season 3 for me was how Garfiel had trauma both from killing Elsa and from beating her ’cause part of the ceiling was going to fall on Maylie, which made him feel that he fluked that win due to catching a lucky break?

It came full circle this episode and even tied Kurgan’s backstory to Garfiel’s situation, which shows how much love Tappei has for Garf. I’m confident he has great things in store for Garfiel since I believe those who suffer the most in Re:Zero will be the ones rewarded the mpst at the end, so I assume the payoff will be biggest for Subaru, Crusch, and Garfiel.

I’ll have my write-up for Kusuriya No Hitorigoto Episode 32 up later tonight and Re:Zero Episode 63 Friday evening.

    1. I hope there’s a reward at the end for some of these characters! Some of them have gone through more than the average fictional character.

      1. I think they will ’cause I believe Tappei believes that suffering builds character.

I know I didn’t add this into my write-up until later, only mentioning that this latest episode strongly hints that Al is not Subaru, but I suspect that one possibility for why Al didn’t know the extent of Capella’s regeneration is that she was not the Sin Archbishop of Lust when he was the hero of the story.

In my theory, it’s mostly the hero and the heroine of the story who are different when the world is reconstructed after its destruction, but there are perhaps other small differences as well, as part of the world’s attempt to break the cycle of being destroyed and reconstructed may involve changing things up with the hope that the next iteration of the world will be the key to the end, which would account for something such as Capella being the Sin Archbishop of Lust in the current world but not in the previous iteration of the world.

  2. Good Lord! Speed racer! I grew up watching that show! And Gigantor! And Marine Boy! Nostalgia indeed!

  3. Yay, thank you for the shout out! I’m so glad you enjoyed my post. Black Blood Brothers totally does have a fun nostalgic feeling to it. There’s something about it that reminds me of both Hellsing and weirdly enough Yu-gi-oh!. I think it might be the big floppy hat that the main character Jiro wears. Anyway, so far the series has been lots of fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens!

    1. Your posts are always in the running! It was close this time — the total number of anime sites might be down, but the bloggers who remain are writing some great material!

      1. I know I definitely didn’t do well enough this time. I think my analysis of Re:Zero this time was too much recap and not enough sharing what I thought of the material aside from some key points that required interpretation, which is something I am trying to adjust to.

Please let me know what you think!
