Kowloon Generic Romance Episode 1 Review – An Ominous Rhombus In The Sky

I’ve seen some still shots from Kowloon Generic Romance and was intrigued. Okay, I’ve seen some still shots of Reiko Kujirai and was intrigued. That counts, right? I figured given the scene backgrounds, it was a period piece. But then I read this post by ecargmura on the site ARUM Journal and realized just how wrong I was. In fact, ecargmura’s post convinced me I need to add this series to the short list of anime I watch this season. See if you have a similar reaction!

Making Great Characters

Some of you might know that I write novels. I’ve been writing for decades, and if I had to say one thing I’ve learned as an older writer that would shock my younger writer’s self, it’s that no matter how much you write, no matter how good you think you are (or think you aren’t), you can still find ways to improve. With that truth in mind, I came across this post by The Overage Otaku on the site Confessions of an Overage Otaku. I want to write great characters. I want to write characters who break the reader’s heart or inspire them to change the world. And I thought The Overage Otaku’s treatment of this topic is the best I’ve read. And I’ve read a lot of them! See if you agree!

First Look: Apocalypse Hotel

Blaise Pascal once said “If I Had More Time, I Would Have Written A Shorter Letter.” The idea is that brevity is harder than verbosity. That’s even more true if that brevity hits hard, like this post by dragonzigg on the site The Glorio Blog. By the time I finished reading this intense review of Apocalypse Hotel, I was ready to drop everything and go watch the first episode! That’s some very effective writing right there! Go see what I mean!

Seasonal First Impressions: UMA MUSUME CINDERELLA GREY at the Starting Gate

If I had to pick a studio that seemed to have read my mind and produced art and animation that appealed to parts of my brain I didn’t even know I had, I’d say it was CygamesPictures. Based on their latest work, Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray, their streak continues! But it’s not only the art and character design that captured my imagination. This week, I found this post on The Magic Planet that perfectly captures why I adore this studio’s work. The Magic Planet’s post always offer thought-provoking insights and well-considered perspectives, and this post is no exception. After seeing the first episode, I heartily endorse this post’s perspective!

Shallow Dives in Anime

Solo Leveling: Arise from the Shadow: It’s Korean, that means it’s Different.

Why is Solo Leveling Season 2: Arise from the Shadow so well-received? There are a lot of easy answers to that, and I’m not saying they’re not right. But I don’t like easy answers, because they often mask deeper, more interesting answers. I found a great example of that this week in Dewbond’s post on Shallow Dives in Anime. Dewbond started with the easy answers, then went beyond them. And I have to say — I think he’s onto something! Go see what you think!

  1. TCrow, here is my write-up on Episodes 1-2 of Kowloon Generic Romance.

I think based on what has been presented in Episodes 1 and 2 that Kowloon Generic Romance’s world is unnatural or artificial. Make what of that you will.

  2. Kowloon Generic Romance was quite a surprise. A mixture between romance, psychological thriller, and SF. Come to think of it, it could easily have been a Phillip K. Dick story. After watching the first episode, I learned that it’s by the author of After the Rain (or only character design? I need to look it up). This is great.

And Apocalypse Hotel is great, too. An original anime from Cygame Pictures (you know, like Zombieland Saga).

A pretty good season for SF (and those are rare in anime).

  3. TCrow, here’s my write-up for Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Episodes 35-36. I’ll try to get my write-up for Kowloon Generic Romance Episodes 1-2 up by the end of Monday night.

  4. Oo, thanks for pointing out the Confessions of an Over Aged Otaku’s post! I just read it, and it was really good. It gave me some really good ideas on how to spot a great character and why they could be so memorable. I always learn something interesting whenever I read one of their posts.

  5. Kowloon Generic Romance is the most ambitious new anime this season. I’ll try to have my write-ups for Episodes 1 and 2 released tomorrow after I’ve gotten my write-ups for Episodes 35-36 of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto up.

Please let me know what you think!
