The Apothecary Diaries Episode 39 Review – Ice Cream, You Scream

Without actually watching a series, it’s tough to say if it’d be enjoyable. Yeah, that’s kind of obvious, but sometimes it’s helpful to set the tone. That said, a good review can give me a general sense. One of the telltale signs? If the reviewer can dig into a character’s motivations and find interesting contradictions! That’s exactly what ecargmura did this week on ARUM JOURNAL in her review of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. See what her analysis says about Maomao!

Frieren: Journeys Short and Eternal

Do you know something else I take as a sign that a show would capture my interest? The sheer volume and diversity of the material written about it. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End might have finished airing over a years ago, but it’s still generating a lot of thought-provoking content. That’s true of this post by Twwk on the site Beneath the Tangles. This post takes a look at Frieren’s themes through the site’s unique lens, and I came away from the review with an even deeper appreciation for what the series achieved. See if you have the same reaction!

Yes, You Are Projecting – Planetarian Spoiler Review

I’m just full of pithy and astonishingly obvious observations tonight, aren’t I? Next up: writing poignant, emotional scenes without sliding into saccharine-coated platitudes is tough. That’s really clear when you find a show that pulls it off with grace. One such example is Planetarian, which made it look easy. Do you know what else is hard? Reviewing the series without falling into the same trap! But not only did Austin Harper avoid becoming melodramatic in this review on Harper Anime Reviews. Just like Planetarian itself, he made it look easy. Go see what I mean!

Let’s Watch UMA MUSUME – CINDERELLA GRAY Episode 12 – “The Fall Tenno Sho”

It seems that whenever miss yuri sorcereur reviews a series that I adore on The Magic Planet, I celebrate those posts. I just want to make it clear it’s not automatic, and I’m not playing favorites. It’s that miss yuri sorcereur’s posts — like this one reviewing Umamusume: Cinderella Gray — do such a fine job of capturing exactly what I like about series like that I’d be lying if I said they weren’t my favorites! And so it is this week. I love Cinderella Gray, and I love how this review helps me remember it. I think you’ll have a similar reaction!

Orb: We Can Talk A Lot On the Movements of the Earth

Time for a personal recollection! When I was a young ‘un, I enjoyed learning about my faith. Yes, Christianity had been founded by then. I mean, come on — I’m not that old. But if you belong to any faith known to humanity, there will come a time when you learn something that hurts. It might be about the Spanish Inquisition (not the Monty Python kind). Or maybe you learn about St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre. Or — well, you get the idea. No matter what your faith, the list goes on. And on. And on.

“Freaked out” doesn’t begin to describe my reaction. Like many before me, I tried to rationalize it by saying these reports were from anti-Catholic or anti-Christian elements. Or “there are two sides to every story.” But I forced myself to face the facts.

I’ve seen many people refuse to acknowledge those facts. To someone who thinks they are so holy that they should be able to walk up to < insert persecuted minority here > and stone them to death them, and you’re anti-< whatever that someone is > if you object.

For my entire life, for as long as I can remember remembering, I’ve tried to understand the world as it is, and my opinion of it be damned. I know too well, from my own experience, what evils rationalization can bring. So I avoid it. I studied the above-mentioned situations. I tried to re-conceptualize my faith (such as it is) in a way that acknowledged reality. On the plus side, I am confident that my understanding is the best it can be at this time. On the negative side, there’re like three people on the face of the Earth who I can talk to about this without getting stoned.

And not the pleasant kind of stoned, either. Seems some populations keep their tar constantly boiling, and buckets of feathers at the ready.

Anyway. This week, Merlin, on his site Merlin’s Musings, reviewed Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. He looked at the series with a steady eye, and he accurately relayed what he saw. In doing so, he reminded me of the intellectual struggles I just talked about. Working through sometime so important to one’s identity is tough. But in my experience, I’ve never know anyone go wrong by making the attempt. And this review does just that.

  1. I didn’t expect an episode review of Apothecary Diaries to be here and not Kowloon Generic Romance that you usually showcase. Thank you, though!

    1. Believe me, your review for Kowloon Generic Romance was on the short list! But I really enjoyed your character insights for Apothecary Diaries this week!

    1. Wild planet we live on, isn’t it? Kinda lonely, in a way, after we make certain realizations! Lynn and I used to talk about it — the lyrics to Queen/David Bowie’s Under Pressure are perfect for it!

Please let me know what you think!
