Every week, I visit almost 230 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Believable Characters Galore in Fragrant Flowerโs Episode 3
After being in the anime blogging space for almost 10 years, I’ve begun to get a handle on whose opinions are based on conviction and personal insight, and which are based on what will generate clicks. Some folks bemoan a reduction in the number of anime sites (from a high of about 430, we’re down to about 230), but this decline has a silver lining: most of the bloggers left are serious about sharing their perspective. And even among those, I have a sense for whose opinions I trust. Which isn’t as grandiose as it sounds. I could as honestly have said “whose opinions are close to mine.”
Yeah. I’m kinda arrogant. But I’m working on it!
This week, a number of bloggers whose opinions I value had something in common: they spoke highly of the third episode of The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. The first example we’ll see if this one from Marquan on the site AniTAY-Official. Knowing absolutely nothing about the show, after reading this post, I learned that a) it has some seriously interesting characters and b) I think I want to watch for Subaru Hoshina alone! While I ponder what that says about me, head on over and see what you think!

The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity Episode 3 Review โ When Your Friends Are Protective
The second (of three!) posts about The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity is from ecargmura on the site ARUM JOURNAL. ecargmura mentioned Subaru Hoshina and gave me yet more insights into this character, which was cool. What was even more cool was ecargmura’s other reasons for liking this episode. Seems it has more than just interesting characters going for it! Rather than spoiling her points, I’ll just encourage you to visit ARUM JOURNAL and see for yourself.

Overprotective Friends โ The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Ep 3 Review
The third post about The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity (I think that’s a record number of posts I’ve celebrated about about a single show in a single post!) is from In Asian Spaces on the site In Asian Spaces. Did the most mention of Subaru Hoshina? Yep! So, that’s a common theme! In Asian Spaces dives more deeply into yet another aspect of the show. Again, not wanting to spoil it, I won’t disclose it here. But I will say that if I thought I wanted to watch this series before, I absolutely want to watch it now! Go see if you agree!

I am Loving These โMy Hero Academiaโ Vigilantes
I’m in a state of partial burnout for this franchise in general, but when I saw that My Hero Academia: Vigilantes last season, I automatically added it to my backlog. Where it still sits. With plenty of company. That’s the context for me coming across this post by Merlin on the site Merlin’s Musings. Merlin gave the series his usual treatment, which is to say he comprehensively discussed what makes the show what it is. Is the show still in my backlog after reading Merlin’s post? Yep! In fact, it might have edged up a few steps! Go see if you have a similar experience!

Anime Review #150: Attack On Titan (Part One)
What’s left to be said about Attack on Titan? Quite a lot, and all the more for being written after the dust has settled and the entire breadth of the work is available. That’s the perspective from which Traditional Catholic has begun his reviews of the series on the site The Traditional Catholic Weeb. I say “has begun” because this review covers the first two seasons. I particularly liked the points he listed under “What I Liked.” I can’t even disagree with his selections for “What I Didn’t Like.” See if he talked about what you did, or didn’t, enjoy about the series!

TCrow, White Fox, the studio that works on Re:Zero, has been acquired by Alphapolis, which has mandated White Fox to focus adapting its IPs, so it’s possible that moving forward after Season 4, the Re:Zero adaptation will be completely unrecognizable, for better or worse. Alphapolis is a competitor of Kadokawa, so White Fox probably won’t work on Re:Zero after Season 4.
Thank you for giving me two new blogs to read who are also covering Fragrant Flower Blooms, and reminding me to check up on two more I already knew of! (and for including me on the list, as well โบ๏ธ)
Has the number of active anime bloggers really dropped that much? I don’t think you should apologize for being honest and valuing honest and authentic opinions – as you told me before, they are much needed in our current world โบ๏ธ
You’re welcome on both counts!
Yeah, we saw over 430 active sites at one point a few years ago. With some of Google’s recent changes, like emphasizing AI results over the sites that produced the original material, I have a feeling we might see that number edge downward again.
It’s weird, but I really do feel like I have to apologize, since my perspective is so far out of the mainstream (where clicks have financial value, which many seem to favor over authentic exchanges). But I’m not about to change now. And there really are some great perspectives left in the anime blogging space! Yourself included!
Wow, I didn’t even think about how the AI algorithm change could affect blogs. Then again, I haven’t really been online consistently for a while until now, so ๐
Nah don’t apologize. Sites like yours are needed compared to the big corporations and literal news networks that are now watering down anime and anime news with their corporate drivel and keyword hogging because they are “established” websites.
Thank you for showcasing the anime blogging voices that are left! Your website is primarily how I find new blogs to read!
As someone who has dabbled in both video, audio and been a long-time blogger. Anime blogging has been going downhill since 2019, long before AI came. Video / Podcasts, if done right (and pushed a bit), can garner attention / views more than blogging these days. That’s the honest perspective. Long time bloggers have mostly moved on or if still active, their comment section is well dead. That isn’t down to AI, has AI algo changes helped? no. The community aspect of anime blogging (or blogging in general) is down to other humans searching for each other. If people can’t be bothered, well that’s on them.
Youโre absolutely right. For the sake of brevity, I focused on AI, but in the context of Google using all our content to train its AI, then use its AI to present results โ instead of sending the traffic to our sites. It used to be, our goals (more readers) and Googleโs (more eyes on ads) matched. Now, well, in the short term, the goals are misaligned. It remains to be seen how Google and all the other companies training their LLMs will make up for the collapse of creative content.
I think Iโm comfortable with a smaller community, to be honest. So Iโm not upset by the current state. Though I am worried that Iโm not seeing as many new writer join the community!
To add to what you are saying, Google and a lot of other platforms in an effort to compete with TikTok had started pushing short-form videos, so I think that added to people searching for blogs less. Then with Google, again, prioritizing AI now over actual blog posts, they essentially have added to the slow demise you have mentioned since 2019.
