Crying About Robots with Apocalypse Hotel

I have enjoyed reading science fiction for as long as I can remember. It’s not just the coolness factor, which for me is powerful. I mean, real-life naval ships are cool. But ships that size in space? That’s even cooler! If that’s a word. But like I said, there’s more to it.

Science fiction can examine problems in a way that contemporary drama can’t. A good science fiction can build a metaphorical or allusive framework in which characters can explore real problems — with enough emotional and intellectual distance to get beyond agenda and rhetoric. I wanted to watch Apocalypse Hotel for that reason alone. Alex Henderson, on the site The Afictionado, gave me another reason: the show delivers on the feels. An in-depth exploration of the human condition and authentic human emotions? Sign me up!

The Power of Two: Insomniacs After School

It’s weird. When I watch anime, or a movie, or even read a book, it’s like I split the experience into two simultaneous data streams that get shunted to two separate, distinct processors. Bet that wasn’t a sentence you were expecting! I guess it’s a software developer-influenced (yes, I do miss software development, now that you mention it) way of saying that I see fiction from two distinct perspectives.

One just wants to sit back and enjoy. That part wants to be the quintessential viewer or reader — just enjoy the ride and look for fun moments.

The other part of me see the work from the inside out. I want to understand how the writer achieved this or that. Why did that scene work? Why did I care about that character, but not another? This part of my brain really, really looks forward to The Overage Otaku’s posts on Confessions of an Overage Otaku. It’s not that I don’t know anything about the topics The Overage Otaku writes about. It’s that I know enough to know I don’t know everything — and very much want to learn more! And yep, he did it again! This time, he used Insomniacs After School as the example. And now I know a little more than I did before! Go see if you have a similar experience!

Jiji 1/2 Needs an Exorcism

I like reading posts by folks who understand anime in general and a given show in particular. That’s why I really enjoyed this post by Roderick J “Jay” Friz on the site D&A Anime Blog. He really understands Dandadan. Its second season is underway, and there’s quite a lot going on. So, yeah, typical Dandadan. But Roderick J “Jay” Friz lays out exactly what’s going on, and why — plus why it’s important. I particularly liked the video comparison that Roderick J “Jay” Friz linked to that compares the manga and the anime for a key scene. Go see if you caught everything important in this episode!

My Hero Academia The Movie-You’re Next: Thank You, Next

I used to review My Hero Academia as a matter of course. Well, since Season 4, anyway, though I did watch previous season as they aired. But somewhere along the way, I stepped away. It wasn’t even a conscious decision. It was more that felt like I needed a break. Will I go back to it? Sure. Probably. I hope. Maybe?

Posts like this by Hanime on Anime on the site Hanime on Anime give me another perspective to think about as I ponder the questions of watching it again. Hanime on Anime reviewed the movie My Hero Academia: You’re Next, and her candid review talked about what worked and what didn’t. It struck me that the movie’s a microcosm of my own reaction to the series as a whole. By the end of the review, though, I was more sure than ever that I’ll catch up — eventually. Go see if you have a similar reaction!

5 August 2025: The Call of the Night and My Dress-Up Darling vibes are impeccable

I want you to brace yourself, because what I’m about to say might shock you. Ready? I’m watching both of the shows that Aevrus discusses in this post on Karmaburn. As they air. They’re not on my backlog. I’m watching them along with the rest of you!

Aren’t you glad I warned you?

Both of these show have something in common, and Aevrus’s post nails it. In fact, the post inspired me to ask related questions, like which of the two shows — My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 or Call of the Night Season 2 — make it look easier? It’s a question I’m still thinking about, because every time I think I have an answer, I come up with a counter response! While I consider that, head on over to Karmaburn and see what you think!

  1. TCrow, this only has tangential relevance to anime, but I was on vacation in Switzerland, and my cousin messed with both of my devices after I shared anti-China views.

Neither my cellphone or laptop now force run the HTTPS protocol when I browse websites. I had told my cousin that I ensured that two probable spy for China didn’t get to work for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, so he retaliated against me.

After I had told him that, he concocted the fantasy of him having allergies acting up and stayed home instead of going out like the rest of us next morning, citing how he had come down with allergies even though he only usually gets them from April to May. It was in reality a cover story for staying home to mess with my devices.

I had been charging both my laptop and cellphone when I had gone out that day while he was home, and they had still been functioning normally up until that point. Screw this guy for being a traitor to his country and a bad relative. In retrospect it makes sense since his favourite anime are Monster, Death Note, and Code Geass, so he sees himself in highly intelligent people with a god complex. I didn’t confront him since I knew he’d deny everything, so I left it at that.

    1. And I take back what I said about Lelouch having a god complex ’cause he doesn’t. He’s quite human compared to Light.

    2. I’m sorry to hear that!

I wonder how he got into your devices. Did he use remote exploits? Did he steal your credentials somehow?

I heard someone once describe China as everything East Berlin was, only with Silicon Valley levels of technological sophistication. They’re scary dangerous like that.

I’m not sure what level of technical expertise you have, so you may already have done this. If not, I’d navigate to Malwarebytes and scan your laptop. Even if you have an anti-virus program installed, Malwarebytes might find something in addition.

If you have an iPhone and your data’s backed up to iCloud, I’d be tempted to reinitialize the device and restore it from backup. Though, candidly, I’ve never done that — so maybe consult an Apple Store? And I don’t have experience with Android, so sorry I don’t have any insights into what to do there.

Again, you may already know all of this. But if he changed your browser’s settings, I’d suspect he did more than that. Remote Access Trojans (RATs) are a thing.

Please let me know what you think!
