Secrets of the Silent Witch – 08

I’m not going to joke about not having enough time this week. I’ll just honestly lament, one time, that I really wish I had more time to watch shows like Secrets of the Silent Witch. It looks just like the kind of show whose world I’d like to get lost in. Optimistically, I’ll have to wait until I retire to have anything like the time I want to watch shows or read books. Until I get there, I’ll have to live vicariously through bloggers like FlareKnight on the site Anime Evo. FlareKnight’s review helps me see the episode from his perspective. Just based on his coverage of Secrets of the Silent Witch, I want to cheer Monica on. And I haven’t even seen the show yet! So, until I do, I’ll keep reading. I think you’ll enjoy the same thing!

Wonder Egg Priority

Sometimes, taking the time to reflect on a series changes one’s opinion. Not always. I’ll never sing the praises of Dies irae, for example. But other shows are more nuanced. They might yield their secrets after quiet contemplation. I’ve often wondered if Wonder Egg Priority was such a show. Turns out, I’m not the only one to wonder that. Chua Tek Ming, on the site Chua Tek Ming~Anime Power~ !LiVe FoR AnImE, aNiMe FoR LiFe!, must have wondered the same thing, because he just wrote about that very topic! The series started with such a splash, and it seemed to end on quite a different note. Does Chua Tek Ming thing the ending has improved with age? There’s one way to find out!

Twenty Years Later: Ah! My Goddess TV Anime Series

Do you have some series that you watched so long ago, even thinking about them evokes a sense of nostalgia? Ah! My Goddess is ones of those series for me. It came out 20 years ago. Can you believe it? Time’s a slippery mother… Anyway. The Fandom Post has been running a series of retrospective reviews — taking the original review posted a decade or two ago and updating it. When I saw that G. B. Smith revisited the review of Ah! My Goddess, I had to take a look. The post surprised me, in a very good way. It brought up points about the series that I had not considered, and I thought I’d pretty much plumbed the show’s depths! Plus, the post meets my minimum standard for Ah! My Goddess reviews: it speaks well of Urd. See if the review talked about why you enjoyed the series!

Orb-On the Movements of the Earth: The Truth of the Matter

Some shows yield their secrets after time and reflection. Sometimes, that’s because the show is so subtle. Or maybe its debut triggers a fan reaction that conceals the more quiet meanings. But sometimes, the show’s thematic weight can actually get in the way. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth seems to have been a show like that. It covers a topic that weighs heavily on my heart, given my degree. Hanime on Anime, on the site Hanime on Anime, tackled the question of the impact of its theme in this post. It’s a tough, complex topic, but Hanime on Anime makes it look easy. What were her conclusions? Guess how you can find out!

Why Aira x Okarun Works | Dandadan Season 2 Episode 8 [Video Review]

Dan Da Dan Season 2 came out of the gate fast, and it hasn’t slowed down. Or has it? Whenever there’s a show that shows consistent quality, I have to confess that my inner pessimism keeps whispering, “In the next episode, or next scene, they’re going to wiff it!” And not wiff it good (yes, I know the videos says “whip it” — I didn’t say it was a good joke). I’ve been keeping up with Dandadan this season, but shockingly, I’ve fallen an episode behind. Not to worry. Otaku Sinh, on the site Otaku Sinh, just dropped this post about the most recent episode. Of course, Otaku Sinh included his hilarious alternate meaning picture captions — those alone make the post worth reading! But don’t stop there. The rest of the post is worthwhile, too! Go see what I mean!

  1. I also don’t think the Wonder Egg Priority ending improved with age. I believe it’s still absolutely train wreck that ruined what came before. The writers only thought about introducing twist after twist after twist and never knew where they were going. The final true ending episode had some unbelievably terrible twists.

  2. TCrow, I updated the post. Sometimes, I make the mistake of thinking others will understand me completely without my laying bare all my thoughts on the matter, so I’ve updated it to be as comprehensive as possible.

    1. I don’t know if you’ve read it already, TCrow, but I’ll just post something extra I added into the post in case you’ve already read it.

For the record, here is a list of info that is guaranteed to be false or highly likely to be false that has been spread throughout the story as of Season 3, and I will use logic to explain why the info is false:

Beatrice and Echidna have said that Satella, the Witch of Envy, killed and devoured the other witches of sin, which is 100% false since if that were the case, there would be no corpse of Echidna at the Sanctuary. Echidna has likely been speading this lie deliberately to unite the world against Satella in the future, and she likely had Beatrice unknowing cooperate with her by telling her to tell this to outsiders, like she did with Subaru.

Ram previously indicated that folklore indicates that the great dragon that protects Lugunica lies beyond a great waterfall. Echidna said that Sekhmet, the Witch of Sloth, drove a dragon past the Great Waterfall all for a chance to rest. Why this info is almost certainly false is ’cause if said dragon really were trapped beyond the Great Waterfall, how would the Royal Family have entered a covenant with it? This fake lore is probably meant to keep people from seeking out the holy dragon.

Crusch called mabeasts the creation of the Witch of Envy, but if mabeasts really were created by the Witch of Envy, of which Subaru smells like, why do mabeasts try to eat him? In Season 2, it was revealed that mabeasts were created by Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony, and that she and her mabeasts find Satella and Subaru’s scent irresistibly delicious, and there’s no way the creator would make beasts that want to eat her, which could have been sussed out in Season 1 with logic.

Echidna said that Carmilla gave emotions to non-human beings, which is demonstrably false since insects likely existed long before she even existed, and we know insects can feel emotions.

Hoshin was believed to have been one of the founders of Kararagi, where Anastasia and others who speak in the Kansai dialect live. In Season 3, buildings in Priestella were constructed with Japanese-style architecture with uniquely Japanese meals served with different names, and Priestella was also noted to be built by Hoshin, leading to Subaru believing that Hoshin was also Japanese, but given the Isekai Quartet movie revealed Alec Hoshin isn’t Japanese and how he indicated that problems from specific worlds should be handled by those who are natives to it, he may actually not have been one of the founders but somehow ended up being credited for the founding of Kararagi and Priestella since it’s an odd statement to make for someone who was isekaied.

      1. TCrow, I forgot one more falsehood.

Beatrice also said in Episode 8 when she mentioned that the Witch of Envy killed and devoured the other witches of sin that legends say that the Witch of Envy doesn’t understand human language, which was proven false when Subaru said that he’d rather love Echidna than her, which had her flying into a rage. After rewatching Season 2 a third time, I believe the Witch of Envy and Satella are separate personalities given Subaru directly called the being that physically manifested in the Sanctuary the Witch of Envy, while all the dead witches aside from Echidna referred to the one who manifested in Echidna’s Dream Castle Satella, or Tella, in Typhon’s case. That would explain why she can only repeat “love you” and “love me” in the physical world if she’s a separate personality and why Satella is clear of mind and can speak normally in the Dream Castle as compared to the Witch of Envy that manifested in the Sanctuary. I’m not sure why there are two personalities though. Suffice to say, there is more than enough reason to believe that Echidna and perhaps others tried to pin the blame on Satella for everything, likely to unite the world against her at the end of the story.

      2. Plotting a story with one or two misdirections is tough. I’m trying to imagine the kind of labyrinthine plot structure, including who knows what and when, that Tappei Nagatsuki had to construct to keep all of this straight.

That is, if he just doesn’t keep it in his head! I know I couldn’t do that; but I shouldn’t assume he couldn’t.

It’s impressive that you’ve been able to identify these contradictions as it is! There’s just so much to this story.

  3. TCrow, here is another Re:Zero theory from me:

    https://thoroughwatch.org/?p=170

Basically, I don’t think Echidna is the one who cast the very complex, layered spell in Episode 48 that Emilia broke after she passed the Sanctuary trials. I believe it was likely someone else from four hundred years ago.

Please let me know what you think!
