Every week, I visit over 215 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

How to Build a Series: Masamune-kun’s Revenge
When I was a young ‘un, I remember watching westerns on TV (yes, they made TVs back then; and yes, they were even in color, for the most part!). I still remember watching High Plains Drifter with Clint Eastwood. The bull-whipping scenes haunt me to this day. That’s the movie that cemented my opinion of revenge-themed fiction. The anime Samurai Champloo (just to keep this related to anime!) was another example.
Well, as I might have expected, The Overage Otaku, on the site Confessions of an Overage Otaku, had something to say about that particular sub-genre. And — no lie! — his post changed my opinion of revenge-themed fiction. I have avoided watching them for years (Samurai Champloo being the exception), and certainly would never have considered writing one. Now, both are back on the table. What did The Overage Otaku say that changed my mind so dramatically? You know how to find out!

Hanime on Anime Special Review: K-Pop Demon Hunters
You might be saying, “Dude, hold on — you’re celebrating a post about something other than anime here?” That’s a valid question. Generally speaking, I only talk about anime on this site. I don’t even talk about manga. But I’m making an exception for K-Pop Demon Hunters. I’m not going to try to say it’s anime-adjacent, which is the argument I use for Avatar: The Last Airbender. No, I’m just going to say this flat out: it’s just that freaking good. I haven’t enjoyed a work of fiction this much since Re:CREATORS. For context? Re:CREATORS is my favorite piece of fiction ever. In any medium. In any genre. Period.
For more context: I’m listening to How It’s Done even as I write this (any song with “fit check for my napalm era” has gotta be fun — and it is).
The movie’s earned acclaim for its animation, its fight and dance choreography, and especially its music. But it offers more than that. A lot more. I’ve actually been thinking about writing a post (or a series of posts — there more than enough material!), but turns out I don’t have to. Hanime on Anime, on the site Hanime on Anime, just wrote this post about what really makes the movie so special — and she absolutely, positively, freaking nailed it. Go see if you caught the same thing she saw!

CJFC : The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes (movie review)
I can’t be everywhere and I can’t watch everything. That’s a bummer, but the first step towards fixing a problem is identifying it. Though to be honest, I can’t see me getting past the first step on this one. Be that as it may, I love coming across posts that celebrate a series of movie that I missed. RisefromAshes, on the site Phoenix Talks Pop Culture Japan, just made me aware of the movie The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes, which came out in September 2022. Everything that RisefromAshes said about the movie makes me wish I’d caught it when it came out. But it’s not too late! So, while I try to find out where it’s streaming, you know what to do!

Clevatess Episode 03 review: fuck you Vroko
I watched the first episode of Clevatess to see if I wanted to review it. It was close, but there was no way I wasn’t going to watch My Dress-Up Darling Season 2. So, onto the back log it went. Since then, I’ve been hearing a lot good about it, including this post. See the title? You know that an episode affected the writer when they use colorful language. It’s safe to say that Bloop, on the site Scribble about anime, experienced some level of emotional investment in this episode. The way he described it had me right there in the moment, too. I love reading posts like that! Go see if you have a similar reaction!

Hidden Gems: Hula Fulla Dance Review
The movie we talked about earlier isn’t the only cool bit of anime I found out this week that I missed. In this post, Lisa De La Cruz, on the site The Wonder of Anime, talked about Hula Fulla Dance, which came out in late 2021. At first glance, it reminded me of Hanayamata, and in a good way. I enjoyed the latter’s glimpse into a style of dance I’d never seen before. But the way Lisa De La Cruz described Hula Fulla Dance, it seems to have a unique perspective — in addition to featuring a cool form of dance. It’s not only fun to read about series I accidentally missed. It’s also a great example of the anime community helping each other be aware of shows that’re easy to miss with tons of seasonal anime that comes out. That’s good stuff — just like this review!

Dropping in late to say thank you for mentioning my review! I had a ton of fun at that screening so I’m glad other’s enjoyed what I had to say about it!
You’re welcome! I could tell from your review that you really enjoyed it! Those kinds of review are the most fun to read!
I’ve listened to “Your Idol” on repeat for weeks now! I totally understand listening to the soundtrack while working 😉
That song’s addictive! The whole sequence in the movie is absolutely chilling. I still can’t believe how much I’m enjoying that movie. I have like zero time for entertainment, but I keep rewatching various scenes. I can’t help it!
Thank you so much for mentioning my review!! I’m hoping to find more little quirky gems to share.
You’re welcome! I’m looking forward to reading your future posts!
mb for the late reply crow, still recovering from a bad case of the cold. Thanks for mentioning my post! didn’t expect it. I almost teared seeing Nell being eaten by Betty, my colourful language still stands on what Vrok did. It says a lot when a character can get me to react like that. Show did it right on what it wants to accomplish, getting an emotional investment from viewers.
Hope you’re feeling better! I really enjoyed reading your reaction. That’s the whole reason I watch anime, because it delivers those kinds of moments better than most other forms! At least as far as I can find.
I totally agree! I read the post from Over Aged Otaku, and it was really good. Revenge of Masamune was a really fun comedy, and the post pointed out some really important points about why it was so entertaining.
