Secrets of the Silent Witch: An “Overpowered” Fantasy Protagonist Done Right

I love a well-constructed, over-powered (OP) character. One day, I’ll talk more about that if I ever get around to reviewing Chrome Shelled Regios and its main character, Layfon Alseif. The challenge is in finding a show that knows how to present such a character. It’s not easy! Turns out, there’s one that was hiding in plain sight: Secrets of the Silent Witch. This week, Alex Henderson from the site The Afictionado lays out why Monica Everett works so well as an OP character — and I think Alex nailed it. So much so that I’m doing more than moving that show up on my backlist. I’ve started watching it! How’s that for an attestation?

Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray Part 2 Episode 6 Review

Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray Part 2 was back after taking a week off. It seems that our hero, Oguri Cap, has realized she has a problem. And she has no idea how to approach it! Sounds like a situation that’s perfect for a site that specializes in that analysis of character/plot interaction with an emphasis on forecasting what’s coming next! Yep, I’m talking about DoubleSama on the site DoubleSama. DoubleSama’s analysis was everything I hoped it would be, complete with a look at the contenders in the upcoming Arima Kinen race and even conjecture on the real horse named Oguri Cap. What does DoubleSama think’s coming next? There’s one way to find out!

Character of the Month: Maomao

One measure of a series’ quality, unscientific as it may be, is the volume of the praise it receives from the anime blogging community. But it’s not just the volume while the show airs. It’s how much praise the show generates well after it wraps up. One show that’s still inspiring many writers is The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. It seems like a big reason is the main character, Maomao. Hanime on Anime, on the site Hanime on Anime, added her voice to the chorus singing Maomao’s praises, and I have to say: I had a blast reading it. She made it clear that Maomao has many of the traits I love in female characters. Go see what you think!

The Magic Planet

Let’s Watch UMAMUSUME: CINDERELLA GRAY – Episode 19 – “A Zone Yet Unknown”

Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray Part 2 inspired another post this week. This one is from yuri sorcerer & The Root of All Evil on the site The Magic Planet. The post highlights Oguri Cap as the main character, with an emphasis on what the character’s going through. Talk about fertile ground! It also gets into the side characters like Belno Light and Fujimasa March — both characters I really enjoy. I enjoy the detail that yuri sorcerer & The Root of All Evil puts into their character explorations, and that’s on display in this post. Go see what I mean!

Merlin’s Musings

The Sweet, Endearing Secrets of the Silent Witch

If I had not already started watching Secrets of the Silent Witch, this post by Merlin on the site Merlin’s Musings would have convinced me to do so. I really enjoyed how Merlin built up the expectation implicit in the show’s premise, then set the context for Monica Everett’s character. He also described how the show’s other elements stepped up and delivered. Now I’m looking forward more than ever to watching the rest of the series!

TCrow, do you think these three lines shows a level of awareness of gods that is beyond even most rich folk of this world? Julius puts out that even he is shocked by how his nation is being tested, and I wonder if he has been reincarnated and played many games with gods testing the protagonist. The “even I find shocking!” seems possibly like a very meta remark. When viewed in light of some of his jokes like wave the white flag and pretend that he’s someone else, he shows a level of cheekiness/irreverence that shows maybe he’s not from this world.

Alternatively, it could be a “I really thought no amount of evil would surprise me because all earthly evil stopped surprising me a long time ago but what do you know, the gods managed.”

I was debating whether to put this theory out there, and then in this episode, the boss orc said that he’d been reborn due to the priestess of Palmia. From my perspective Palmia probably hijacked another human soul to put into this orc. That’s why he said he’s not just an orc but an orc god now, typical of a possible reincarnator who thinks he’s hot shit now with his new lease on life, and so I decided to officially post this theory that Julius was isekaied with Episode 10.

Alternatively, Palmia just gave the orc god higher intelligence, but they also cited in this episode that it was very abnormal for non-herd creatures such as monsters to act in a coordinated way so much that they’re making a beeline for the capital, so if the boss orc gained higher intelligence recently, I believe the coordination would not be as singular in focus. This could perhaps show that the boss arc really was also a reincarnator and a had an idea of human tactics.

    1. When I heard Julius say that, I had the same thought. I get the feeling either he’s been reincarnated, or he knows what’s going on. Between that and his utter lack of fear of what Scarlet could do to him, I think there’s got to be something more to this prince.

Please let me know what you think!
