5 Favorite Anime Blog Posts from 2025 Week 49

Every week, I visit over 210 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

You can see a list of the sites I check here: Massive List of Sites!

Let’s Watch UMAMUSUME: CINDERELLA GRAY – Episode 20 – “The Answer”

If you asked me my favorite Fall 2025 series, I’d probably say Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray Part 2. You’d think that by now, I would have gotten over my shock at just how good a sports anime it is, given it focuses on anime horse girls. But you know, putting it that way diminishes it. The characters have enough depth to get me to root for them; the presentation of the races makes the stakes clear. It’s just good stuff. the yuletide sorcerer, on the site The Magic Planet, not only gets that. She is able to present in with deft insights that help me enjoy the episode even more! Go see if you agree!

Anime Review – Komada – A Whisky Family

I enjoy my weekly visits to the over 200 anime sites I’m tracking. Each one of the bloggers has a perspective, or a speciality — or most of the time, both! For example, I always look forward to landing on MIB’s site, MIB’s Instant Headache, because I almost always find a robust, complete, and fair review of a movie or series I’ve never heard of. That’s despite trying to keep on top of things! This week was no exception: MIB reviewed Komada: A Whisky Family. Not only have I never heard of it. But it’s one of those rare shows that I might love because it’s a deep-ish dive into something I know little about (making whiskey) but find fascinating. So now my already scary backlog grows by another title! See what you think!

Ame to Kimi to

I check LiveChart several times before each season starts. I read every anime blog site I can find at least once a week — sometimes more often! So why am I about to talk about yet another show I didn’t know existed? Jeesh — I need to up my data gathering game! This time the anime is Ame to Kimi to. Fortunately, I can rely on bloggers like Myska and her site Myska’s Reviews to catch what I don’t. Good thing, too, because the way Myska describes it, Ame to Kimi to sounds like the perfect anime to watch and de-stress. God knows I could use some de-stressing. Did you see this anime? See if Myska described what you liked about it!

I Thought I Would Hate Virgin Punk (And I Was Dead Wrong)

Years go, I read Harlan Ellison’s short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. It’s no exaggeration that this story scarred me. I can say this of no other story, but — honestly — reading this short story changed me. It was so terrifying in a visceral way that I almost wished I hadn’t read it. But I knew, as a writer, that I need to seek out stories like this. I need to know how hard fiction can hit. This took my mid-layer nightmares and smeared them across a page.

I said mid-layer, because there’s a part of my brain where I don’t go. It contains stuff like was in that story, except worse. That’s why this story still shakes me to this day. It’s a reminder of what’s in that part of my mind. Something that sometimes quietly, sometimes not so quietly, wants to get out and into my own writing. I don’t have the courage to show that to anyone. I really don’t want to affect people like Ellison’s story affected me. Does that make me a coward?

That’s the context of me seeing the headline “I Thought I Would Hate Virgin Punk (And I Was Dead Wrong)” and thought, “Say! I thought I would hate it, too! Let’s see what thesakurasunrise has to say about it on Sakura Sunrise!” See, the descriptions I read about “Virgin Punk – Clockwork Girl” gave me strong Ellison vibes. Turns out, I was wrong and right. I was wrong that I would hate it. Thesakurasunrise addressed all my concerns and then some. And I was right. It does have an Ellison vibe. Which just means this is probably a must see. So, if you’re brave enough, go see what I mean!

Shallow Dives in Anime

Sailor Moon Crystal Episodes 1-12: Epic Transformation Sequence!

I watched Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal almost out of a sense of obligation. I’d seen the older series in bits and pieces but I didn’t remember much. Looking back, I knew they’d been carved up — censored, in some cases. This show, coming out in 2014 (my God — has it been that long?), gave me a chance to take a fresh look. So I was curious when I saw that Dewbond had written a review on his site Shallow Dives in Anime. I mean no insult or disrespect to Dewbond when I say this, but it was almost like I was reading the review I would have written! Kinda scary, actually. But it means I can whole-heartedly recommend you take a look at his review! So, what are you waiting for?

  1. Ame to Kimi to was my favourite show in a strong season. But then, that’s just right up my alley. In terms of slice-of-life shows, I’d put it up there with Flying Witch and Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori. It’s just all-round relaxing and fun. Also, the main character is a professional writer, and the struggles to get things written are just so relatable (well, at least to me).

    1. The comparison to Flying Witch appealed to me — and then you mentioned the main character was a writer! That decided it. I watched the first episode, and I’m glad I did!

  2. TCrow, I personally liked that Dios gave up an enormous amount of power to make sure that the Falconian Army withdrew. With Nanaka under the charm, Nanaka could’ve messed with the negotiations, and I feel Dios being willing to part with the last thing he remembered his mother by shows how hard he was working to redeem himself for causing so much pain to their side. I didn’t particularly like Nanaka still being under Palmia’s charm as it seemed there was no real tell about it, but I appreciated the character arc for Dios.

    1. Nevermind, Nanaka not grilling Dios about what he had up his sleeve was a sign that something was off since beastkin are supposed to be really loyal, and since Dios had betrayed them in such a huge way, it didn’t make sense that Nanaka would not try to get some sort of reassurance from Dios ahead of time due to Dios’s loyalty not having been proven, so although it’s a development I didn’t like, I can’t exactly say it wasn’t foreshadowed.

Everybody who previously fell under the effects of Palmia’s charm were all enemies even before the charm was used, so we had no clear basis to say that a blow in the head should’ve cured Nanaka since everyone who it had previously been used on were already enemies, and I do consider the elves enemies even if they didn’t intend to attack Pallistan this time since they’re part of an enemy country. Hell, the elves themselves not being able to cure their allies should show that it’s not as simple as whacking them or using a spell on them since it was implied they’re keeping tabs on those who fell under Palmia’s charm.

    2. I agree — I didn’t care for Nanaka still being charmed. I saw no hint of it. In fact, this latest episode just felt off. Like maybe it was supposed to be twice its length, but they had to cut a ton out.

I also agree that Dios is more interesting than I would have given him credit for. Seems like there might be more to his story, too.

  3. I know what you mean about I Have No Mouth. Back in the late 60’s when it came out there wasn’t that much SF being published. Libraries could easily get all the major books and find shelf space for them, so most people would read every SF book they could get their hands on, even if it was from someone with a reputation. I was a shock for people who had been reading Clarke, Asimov, and Bradbury!

    1. Wow. I remember those times! I could also walk into the B. Dalton’s at the mall and recognize when a new book was released.

It’s easy to forget about those times. I just checked, and most estimates say there are about 300,000 ebooks published every month.

Even the latest Dangerous Visions has a hard time standing out against that background!

  4. I enjoyed Ame to Kimi to. Besides being a nice relaxing watch there’s gentle humor. For instance there’s a running gag where most people don’t recognize he’s a tanuki. (he’s even got a leaf on his head) A few are confused when she tells them he’s a mixed-breed dog. When she takes him to the vet he’s about to tell her when the tanuki holds up a sign “I’m a dog”, and then another that says “Please be gentle.” After the shots, he says “… so about this…” and the sign says “dog” in a big character. Fuji looks on in innocence and the vet plays along.
The interactions with the first-grade girl next door and Fuji’s friends are fun, with Fuji’s continuing embarrassment that she can’t make any progress on her next book.
