My First Bittersweet Ending Anime

We’re in an era where authentic human experience is more valuable than ever. Some writers try to write only what they think people want to read. Some skip the whole writer part and use generative AI to re-spin stories. Both sell; both leave readers hungry for something more. But reading what an actual human thinks or feels? That’s precious. That’s exactly what attracted my attention to this post by Tessa on the site All About Anime and Manga. The post is about how the series Chrono Crusade affected her. There’s precisely one place I can read about this: in this post. It reminded me of what fiction can do, when it’s honest and real. Go see what I mean!

Dripping in Sauce and Symbolism โ€“ The Observation Deck: Gachiakuta

It’s tough for a writer to employ symbolism that is simultaneously subtle yet clear. If you’re too subtle, today’s audiences might easily miss it. If you’re too obvious or on-the-nose, you might annoy your readers. No reader wants to feel like the writer doesn’t respect them! This post by Virsus on the site Animated Observations makes it pretty clear that Gachiakuta’s writer, Kei Urana, had a good handle on things — and not only in the case of symbolism! Go check out what else Virsus says the writer was able to accomplish!

Sousou no Frieren S2 โ€“ 03

It’s hard to declare something a classic shortly after it airs — and certainly as it’s airing. It’s also tough to gauge a show’s quality in the same timeframes. But if you wave a gun in my direction and demand I answer if the hype surrounding Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 is deserved, I’m going to go with my gut and say yes. In fact, I’d be tempted to add an “absolutely.” But you don’t need to take my word for it. Check out this post by FlareKnight on the site Anime Evo. It’s easy, based on the clarity of his writing, that the show lives up to his high standards. That’s a pretty clear endorsement!

Stories without Stories: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I still sometimes think about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, even though it aired decades ago. From the perspective of story craftsmanship, the story is an example of a rare story type. It’s also a rare subject, with a rare protagonist. I’ve often thought how I’d describe the story’s core concepts, and now I find I don’t have to! The Overage Otaku, on the site Confessions of an Overage Otaku, just took care of it. I liked both the clarity and the humor, and I think you will, too! Go see what you think!

Character of the Month: Rock Lady

I’ve got to make time to watch Rock Is a Lady’s Modesty. I’ve heard a ton good about it from bloggers whose opinions I’ve learned to trust. This week, Hanime on Anime, on the site Hanime on Anime, added to that chorus when she named her character of the month: Rock Lady, the show’s band. I loved the reasons she gave for making the selection. I’m even more intrigued when I found out that BAND-MAID performed some of Rock Lady’s music — and I thought they were cool even before I knew that! Go see if you agree why Hanime on Anime chose Rock Lady as her character of the month!

  1. TCrow, I decided to split off the extended Kana stuff into a different post and and more context to why Kana is drawn to Aqua and why she reacted the way she did due to her attachment style.

  2. TCrow, here’s my latest analysis on Oshi no Ko on how the pursuit of revenge ends up ruining the lives of those around around you and what it could mean for Oshi no Ko’s story. Episode 28 (Season 3 Episode 4) is one of the best in the series.

      1. I also added deep analysis on Kana’s issues considering a lot of Akane fans who self-insert themselves into Aqua’s shoes are bashing Kana for not being attentive to Aqua’s distress.

      2. Thanks for the links! I’m not watching that series, so I have no context; but it’s nice to see that the show is standing up to your scrutiny!

  3. Oh Chrono Crusade. The thing I remember the most about that series is the ending. OMG, it was so sad! I could not believe that’s how it ended! I can still remember tearing up seeing them slumped together on that porch. One of the saddest endings for an action comedy anime. The only one I can think of that comes close is Charlotte. 90% of it was pure comic gold, and then the end, soooo grim and sad!

    1. I’ve got to write a review of Charlotte some time. That last episode hit me hard. Glad to see someone else who appreciated it (I know you didn’t say whether you enjoyed it or not, and that’s fine; I’m just happy to see someone else it affected!).

      1. Oh I totally loved those series, I even liked the endings, it’s just they were super sad! And I was really surprised by the endings because the rest of the series was so light hearted and funny.

    1. I can understand that reaction!

That’s a danger of the narrative structure being too far out there. The character Suzumiya, too. I mean, she’s a god. That’s tough to write and get right. It also feels a bit too self-indulgent at times (all the Endless Eight episodes, for example).

Still, I enjoyed it from the perspective of its construction. It was different. It tried something I hadn’t seen done quite that way before. That part was fun!

Please let me know what you think!
