Every week, I visit more than 215 anime sites looking for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. These are my five favorite posts for the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Revisiting Makoto Shinkai’s The Place Promised in Our Early Days Twenty-Two Years Later – Finding Patterns of Agency and Keeping One’s Word At The Place Where Everything Began
I’m going to tell you something uncharacteristic about me. One of my all-time favorite songs is called Some Other Time, and it’s by Gabriela Robin. Who might actually be Yoko Kanno. Or might be an alter ego, or a being inhabiting a slightly parallel universe weakly interacting with out. It’s hard to say. But whatever the explanation, this is one of the most ethereal songs I’ve ever heard, and it’s nothing like what I usually listen to. I usually listen to Nightwish (yes, I have opinions about which leader singer was “the best”) or Therion (“Sirius B” is my favorite album, just barely, with Son of the Sun being a great example) for inspiration when I write. Bottom line: Some Other Time is very different from those groups.
Why does that matter? Because I first became acquainted with the movie The Place Promised in Our Early Days when I watched the music video in the first link, above. That video used promotional stills from the movie as its background, and it seemed to me at the time, not having seen the movie, that the shots went perfectly with the music. So, when I saw that infinitezenith, on his site The Infinite Zenith, had reviewed the movie, I had to check it out. I not only left the review with a clear idea what the movie was about. I know how infinitezenith’s perspective differed from other published interpretations. As an aside, my money’s on infinitezenith’s position being more accurate. Go see if you agree!

Merlin’s Musings
Welcome to a Love Story Half in Japan and Half in Another World, Ms. Elf
I have a suspicion, and I can’t prove it, but supporting data’s piling up. I think that Merlin, on his site Merlin’s Musings, secretly visits my My Anime List profile, checks what show’s I haven’t seen, and selects one of them to review. He also factors in my tastes. I have no hard evidence; everything’s circumstantial. But it sure looks suspicious! I mean, consider his recent review of Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!. I haven’t seen the show yet. It has a cute elf lead named Mariabelle. It’s an isekai. It’s even a reverse isekai! What more proof do we need? Well, if you’re convinced or you’re not, please do yourself a favor and consider the evidence for yourself!

Rewatching: Fantasista Doll
This is the week of Shows That Crow Should Not Like But Did For Some Unknown Reason (STCSNLBDFSUR). I gravitate to cerebral shows like Re:CREATORS, violent shows like Hell’s Paradise, or fantasies like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. If someone asked you if I’d like Fantasista Doll, you’d probably say “no.” Heck, I’d say “no,” too! But for some reason I can’t fathom, I decide to watch the first episode a few years ago. It hooked me immediately. I blame Madeleine and her planning abilities. I appreciate that in a character. Do you know who else appreciated this series? Kayden from the site Mosaicboy’s Interest Nook, that’s who! Reading his review brought back a lot of pleasant memories. Have you seen the show? Go see if Kayden talked about what you enjoyed!

Undead Girl Murder Farce (Andeddo Gāru Mādā Farusu)
I can’t say enough good about Undead Girl Murder Farce. I’d credit it for helping me come up with the idea for combat maids in my novel Evolution’s Hand Book 2: Dying Breath, but I actually wrote that book a couple of years before I met Shizuku Hasei. Shizuku would feel right at home fighting beside my character Catalina Ojeda. Well, maybe not, since Aya wouldn’t be there. Anyway, when I saw that Ashley Capes, on his site The Review Heap, had reviewed this series, I knew it’d be a fun read — and I was right! He’s a professional writer, you know: you can check out his novels here on Amazon. And you can check out his thoughts on Undead Girl Murder Farce by clicking the button below!

For the Lovers: Love Through a Prism: Stepping Away and Coming Back Stronger
Anime, like any other form of art, can get inside our heads. It can make us remember our past, or make new connections between events we hadn’t considered before. I really enjoy reading posts that chronicle events like that, and that’s one of the reasons I enjoyed so much this post by Erica Santiago on the site The Wonder of Anime. Erica Santiago talked about the impact that watching Love Through a Prism had on her. I think I’m in the target audience based on quotes like “What’s that joke about the best way to make God laugh? Make plans.” That could be my life’s motto! Did you see the movie? Was your experience similar?

I appreciate the inclusion, and I didn’t know you were a fan of Nightwish! My favourite of their songs is “Meadows of Heaven” 🙂
Anette Olzon was lead singer on that, wasn’t she? That’s a great song.

Hmmm. That almost looks like a confession! 🙂 Really enjoyed your post, BTW!
