Sousou no Frieren S2 – 06
I should probably warn you before disclosing this. Are you sitting down? Okay, here goes: I’m watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 as it airs. Aren’t you glad I warned you? Well, it’s Frieren — of course I’m going to watch it! And I’m glad I did, because in episode 6, things start to get dark. Instead of me talking about how and why, let me direct your attention to FlareKnight’s review of the episode on Anime Evo. As always, he has a firm grasp on what happened in the episode and why. He even caught some details I’d missed! Go see if you have a similar experience!

Star Detective Precure! Ep 2 & 3
I’ve talked before about how I’ve tried several times to get into the Pretty Cure franchise. I’d read a review from folks I trust, think maybe it’s time to try again, then end up dropping whichever series I tried. I think I’ve figured out why — it’s too positive. That might sound strange coming from someone who runs a site to celebrate anime, but I think it’s just too positive. At least, I thought so. Then I read this post by Eva from the site AngryAnimeBitches Anime Blog. Eva’s review convinced me to re-consider. I might try the franchise again! The reason is perceptive (on Eva’s part) and depressing (on the world’s). While I try to figure that out, go see if you can figure out which detail caught my attention!

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved Theatrical Review
This week, thanks to Demelza from the site Anime UK News, I have yet more reason to question my information sources. I somehow missed that Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved came out last summer. Well, I guess in my defense, quite a lot has been going on, what with my home country turning into the Fire Nation and all (complete with our own pre-Zuko, Temu version of the Fire Lord). Anyway, it seems like I really want to fix this oversight, based on what this review has to say. Does the movie capture the spirit of the series? Is it a worthy addition to the canon? You know how to find out!

Anime: Three Animes That Made Me Ugly Cry
I don’t cry at anime. I might shed a tear reading about the temple of Arepo. In extreme cases, I might feel sorrow at — you know what? I’m lying through my teeth. With the first sentence. I actually did shed a tear — two, in fact, reading about faithful Arepo. But reading ChibiChonk’s list on Filthy Casual for Life reminded me of three series that did, in fact, trigger a bit of water. I won’t say I ugly cried, because, well, given who I am, ugly is just a part of the package. But these shows were crazy efficient at evoking emotion. See if you remained dry-eyed at the three series she lists!

Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, Streaming on Netflix
I need more lesbian anime in my life. I know what you must be thinking. A guy saying that? It must be because of the wink-wink nudge-nudge. Well, it’s not. Not completely. Okay, that plays a part. But the real reason is because I find the romance more enjoyable. I have to say, I have no idea how straight woman can put up with the less palatable guys (and no, it’s not a majority — it just feels that way — I hope). So, yes, I like watching how the romances unfold. This week, Ambi Reine, on the site Okazu, talked about the series Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, and it sounds like a fine addition to the genre. Why do I say that? There’s one good way to find out!

Thanks for the shoutout! Hope you’re having a terrific day!
You’re welcome! I loved your list — it brought back a lot of memories!
One of the reasons people watch Precure is to have a bright spot in their week. However, because it’s Japan and there are kids in the audience they will throw in tragedy and crushing defeats occasionally. (Ojamajo DoReMi did the same thing) Usually after the characters are well-established. (I’m watching some of the original ’63 Astro Boy for my upcoming Robots panel, and Dr. Tenma’s son is smashed to a pulp in an auto accident 46 seconds into the series!)
If you can get to it, Hugtto might work. One of the themes is trying out different jobs, thinking of your future. Many of those jobs sound fun, but things happen that suck. Flower Shop- how wonderful is that? Customer is furious because the flowers she wants aren’t in stock. Supplier didn’t have any. Employee gets blasted, then the woman complains to management, and she gets yelled at a second time. Welcome to retail, kids!
That 50-episode-and-done structure is just different. Build slow and deep. For the people who have watched a couple series, you know what to expect, and how long that arc is going to be.
I should probably watch the show to have that bright spot. Heaven knows I could use it!
I started Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure, got to episode 13, realized there were 50 episodes, and just kinda walked away! It’s not that I didn’t like it. It just didn’t resonate given the time investment.
But given my reaction to learning there were so many episodes after I started, maybe it was problem of expectations. I’m not against revisiting, and at some point, God willing and the creek don’t rise, I’ll retire. I might have time to watch stuff then!
