Sousou no Frieren S2 – 07

There was a lot to like in this episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2. I enjoyed seeing some more of Genau’s perspective, and I have to say that I enjoyed his vibe — an experienced mage, grown weary of the world, who has yet to give up and retreat. And then there’s his new partner, Methode, who has a thing for head pats and hugs. I’m still now sure how to feel about that! But that’s only part of what I enjoyed in this episode. This post by FlareKnight on Anime Evo discusses those points and more. FlareKnight does his normal great job breaking down the episode and explaining what was important and why. I’ll be interested to see if his predictions for the next episode come to pass!

Angelic Layer Episode 10

I didn’t think that Angelic Layer would be a show that interested me. But that was before I started reading momomanamu’s reviews on the site Anime Hanabi. Now I seriously think I might bump this show up near the top of my backlog. Misaki seems like a main character I can cheer on, and the themes sound like they’d be uplifting. And goodness knows, I can use all the uplifting I can find! If that sounds appealing to you, you know what to do!

Frieren Season 2 Episode 7 Review – Revolte Is My Kind of Demon

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 is one of the more widely reviewed series this season, and it’s easy to see why. We’ve already talked about Genau and Methode. But they were far from the only characters who got screen time this week. Revolte played a prominent role, for example. You might be tempted to conclude that he’s a one-note character because he’s a demon. But his snake tail and four arms argue otherwise. So does 7mononoke in her review on the site Anime Rants. When I read her perspective, I realized that we have something in common, given my reverence for Monster Musume! What does Frieren and Monster Musume have in common? You know what you have to do to find out!

How to Build a Story: Gunslinger Girl

My capacity to absorb and process sadness is at an all-time low. More precisely, it’s been depleted. It was hard enough learning that my country has done something vile like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Now, we’re building — and populating — concentration camps. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If I let myself consider the misery we are intentionally inflicting on our fellow human beings, I am displeased. The actions I can take are limited, and those things are not sufficient. Honestly, the biggest thing keeping me going is my hope that I can help bring to pass a modern day equivalent of the Nuremberg trials. I mean it when I say, “Let justice be done, though the heavens fall.”

What’s that have to do with The Overage Otaku’s review of Gunslinger Girl on Confessions of an Overage Otaku? Well, I tried to watch Gunslinger Girl once upon a time. I got several episodes in. I noted the overall high quality of the narrative. Not only that, but I made note of the compelling characters. And my brain just said, “Welp, that’s enough of that.” And now, after reading The Overage Otaku’s review, I know why. What’s the secret that was hiding in plain sight? You’ll have to read the review to find out!

Shallow Dives in Anime

Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: 30th Anniversary Rerelease: Dance! Fools! Dance!

There’s something special about the first anime you’ve watched. The first anime I remember watching was Speed Racer/Mach GoGoGo in the early 1970s (or so). I have made a point not to rewatch it. After all, the me of the early 1970s likely had a less sophisticated palette when it comes to story craftsmanship. I doubt that Speed Racer would be as good as my younger self remembers.

In a way, I envy Dewbond after reading his recent review on Shallow Dives in Anime. He re-reviewed the first anime he remembers watching, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, and it sounds like it held up pretty well. Not perfectly, of course. What flaws did he discover after watching it again? What parts of the story withstood the test of time? You know what you have to do to find out!

  1. Yay, thank you for the shout out! Yes! I highly recommend Angelic Layer, it’s a very up lifting anime with some great action scenes and a lot more depth than you might expect from a battle arena anime. I’m re-re-rewatching it, and I still find it very entertaining and heart warming.

  2. Yeah, people in my former racket … social sciences … did some pretty nasty things. (See Milgram, or the Stamford Prison studies). But the people behind the Tuskegee studies deserved to rot in hell, not be allowed to publish and get famous.
