Angelic Layer Episode 13!
On the site Anime Hanabi, momomanamu continued her episodic review of Battle Doll Angelic Layer. The reveal in this episode really took me off guard, for two reasons. First, I love how it tied into the main action. Second, it suddenly reminded me of something that happened soon after my wife and I learned our son was deaf. I wanted to see how being in public would feel to him, so I went to the mall, wore hearing aids, and acted as if I were deaf. Let’s just say I learned a lot that day. Enough that I had to question my basic premise that humans are decent creatures, by and large. And BTW, I love how momomanamu addressed a similar concern in her review. Looks like people are people, regardless of culture. Go see what I mean!

Character Study | โIโm sorryโ: Understanding Apologies in The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
I put a lot of effort into writing characters that people will love. Though I’ve been writing all my life in way or another, I try to learn from how other writers create memorable characters. The more I read about The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, the more I think I should watch it for the characters alone. And then I came across this post by Annie May on the site Annieme about that series. The series withstood her detailed analysis of the characters, and that alone lets you know it’s good. The kicker? Her discussion of Subaru dang near brought me to tears. Want to know what amazing characters look like? Then you know what to do!

First Impression: The Ramparts of Ice
Speaking of good characters, it seems like The Ramparts of Ice might be a series to watch. How do I know, since I a) haven’t seen the first episode yet and b) don’t even plan to watch it? Because I just read this review by Twwk on the site Beneath the Tangles. Twwk has a history of writing insightful, balanced reviews, so I’m confident when I say I’m going to keep my eyes on this series. Like I said, I’m always on the lookout for good characters! And while I’m off looking, why don’t you head over and see what Twwk said?

Frieren: Beyond Journeyโs End Season 2 โ Whole-Series Review and Reflections on Finding Relevant Life Lessons in The Northern Plateau
For having a more sedate pace, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 packs a ton of meaning into each episode. I know this for two reasons. First, I watched the show (I know — shocking, right?) and spent several seconds at the end of each episode shaking my head in wonder and delight. Second, I just read this review by infinitezenith on the site The Infinite Zenith. Theinfinitezenith is the perfect reviewer for this series — his attention to detail is a great match for the series’ density of detail. I thought I’d caught a lot, and by some measures, I did. But compared to theinfinitezenith? Yeah, not so much. Go see what a detailed review should look like!

(REVIEW) If You Donโt Like This Show, YOU AND I ARE POLAR OPPOSITES
It takes a lot to get me to consider watching a romcom. First, I have stupidly high standards. Those standards are based on the two romcoms that are in my top anything lists (those are Toradora and My Dress-Up Darling — so you see the heights a series would have to reach). What would it take to get me to watch a romcom? If you told me that The Yuri Sorcerer had asked themselves that question (from this post on The Magic Planet) and had written this review as an answer, I would not be surprised. After reading this review of You and I Are Polar Opposites, I’m inclined to give it a shot. I’m a bit excited about it, too. What did The Yuri Sorcerer say to convince me? Well, you know what you have to do to find out!

TCrow, here’s another correction. It’s not that Anastasia talked about Al in Episode 59 but that since she was about to bring up Al to Priscilla in Episode 59 only for Priscilla to answer what she had intended to say before she said it, and this doesn’t change my point that Foxidna may have been given the order or suggestion to never talk about Al with Subaru under any circumstance.
TCrow, I’ve corrected something on my write-up for Episode 67. Previously I had stated that Echidna may have given the order or suggestion to Foxidna to not talk about Al under any circumstance, but I remembered that Foxidna did talk about Al in Season 3, so my revision is that Echidna may have given the order or suggestion to Foxidna to never talk about Al with Subaru under any circumstance. Echidna may have plans for Al that she needs Subaru to not know.
TCrow, I added more to my write-up and instead of forcing you to find the relevant section, I’ll just post it here.
I suspect there is a very important plot reason why Rem has to be at Pleiades Watchtower, and it’s something we viewers won’t be able to see coming, but Foxidna knows why it must happen, and that’s the reason she planted the idea in Subaru’s head.
I also added a follow-up theory based on Episode 67’s events:

I seriously suspect I need to set aside half a year or so to immerse myself in Re:ZERO so I can start catching more of the foreshadowing. I’m struggling to keep the details I used to know front and center so I can see their pay offs!
TCrow, here’s my write-up on Re:Zero Episode 67:

KakoeiSbi in the comments section again provides an English translation although it’s not a professional translation of course.
1. People are basically people. Most are well-meaning, which sadly is not enough. Everyone lives in their own little world, and views the world through the only lens available to them (and everyone really does include everyone… such as me or you). Still, some people have more curiosity and the makes it easier to expand your horizon. If you expand it too much, though, you might have troubles making decisions.
And some people just don’t care. Those are people who tend stick out, and then we tend to genralise via them. If you think people are generally good, well, no. If you think people are generally selfish, well, no. People are generally people. And nothing can change that.
2. I adore Angelic Layer, and people say it’s one of the few shows whose anime-original content actually makes the show better. I haven’t read the manga, and I forgot what they said was new, but it was totally important to the framing of the whole show.
3. The Fragrant Flower is a very special romance. It also has, probably, my favourite confession scene in anime for two reasons, none of which I’m going to talk about until you watch the show. So there.
4. The Ramparts of Ice is probably my favourite premier so far. It hits pretty hard, but is not – overall – depressing. (Also, it’s the same mangaka as You and I are Polar opposites, and the moods of the show… aren’t quite polar opposites, so it doesn’t work. But they’re very different none-the-less.
I’m having a good time this season so far. There’s even a stupid isekai that feels like Excel Saga got hit by a truck and reborn as… an isekai. (I just watched it.)
I remember debating the essential nature of people in my moral systematic theology class. I watched as people argued their points. It struck me how closely their arguments aligned with their personality.
Now I really have to watch Fragrant Flower to see how the confession scene compares to my favorite (currently, Hitagi Senjougahara’s confession to Koyomi Araragi).
I didn’t know that the same mangaka who did You and I Are Polar Opposites also did The Ramparts of Ice. Cool title, too. Added to the backlist!
TCrow, Episode 1 of Witch Hat Atelier was by far the strongest start of any anime this season as of April 7. Just wanted to let you know.
Cool! Thanks for letting me know. It’s on the short list of series I might review this season, with Wistoria being the other one. I need to make time to watch it.
Maybe I can get by with a little less sleep tonight!
TCrow, are you ready for Re:Zero Season 4?
My first answer is, “Yes!” My second answer is, “I think so.”
This show has the potential to affect me in ways other shows haven’t! But yes, I’m looking forward to it!
Crunchyroll’s doing a beyond terrible job translating Re:Zero. It translated “country” as “city” in Episode 67, and given if they need to travel the person they’re looking for is obviously not in Priestella, making it a catastrophic error, and what should have been “caretakers” or “regents” was rendered as “fakes”, which is pure gibberish in English.
If you recall from Season 1 and even what Episode 67 reminded viewers of, the royal family got sick and perished, so there’s a Council of Wise Men leading the nation. That’s how I know “caretakers” or “regents” would have been the proper translation. I think it’s very likely that Crunchyroll is using machine translation as this sort of mistake is just insane.
MuseAsia, which is available in southeast Asia and to those who use VPNs with hosts in that region, is known for having much better translations of Re:Zero than Crunchyroll, and I suspect a higher-up at Crunchyroll knew this, which is why Crunchyroll used its financial and legal might to force Muse Asia to release Re:Zero Season 4 2 weeks behind its simulcast, which is a big departure compared to the past.
It’s disgusting that instead of trying to do a better job, Crunchyroll, or maybe should I name Sony instead since it owns Crunchyroll, decided to kneecap a competitor that was putting out a far superior product compared to what it was churning out with machine translation and robbed viewers of being able to watch an accurate translation in a timely fashion.
I watched part of the dub, and it said “fakes,” too.
I’ve seen others say they’re not happy with it, either.
I wish it weren’t so, but monopolies absolutely don’t benefit the consumer. The Crunchyroll of old was a much more enjoyable experience.
Yay! I’m so glad you liked my post! I grew up with two brothers who had disabilities and I’ve been an advocate for people with disabilities since I was 12 and protested my favorite radio station for saying anti-disabilities comments on their broadcast. In recently years lots of organizations and countries have been making great strides in improving their stance on how they treat people with disabilities, but that hasn’t always been the case, and we as a human race still have a long way to go.
It’s good to hear you advocate for them! Especially from a perspective of knowledge. We need more of that!
We have made strides; and we’ve taken some steps back. We absolutely have a long way to go!
Fragrant Flower was one of the 8 shows my crew and I picked for our intro to romance anime panel at Penguicon last week (From Maison Ikkoku to Clear Moonlit Dusk). On the surface it sounds so stereotypical. Bad-seeming boy, beautiful perfect girl, friends in conflict. We all said to watch it anyway, it’s so much more than that. Subaru gets more of a story because she’s Kaoruko’s main friend. Rintaro has a posse and their changes aren’t as dramatic.
I’m really going to have to check it out. I’ve been re-watching Solo Leveling, and as much as I enjoyed it, I need to have more self discipline!
