A Conversation With Yoko Kanno

Yoko Kanno is one of my favorite composers. Not composers related to anime. She’s one of my favorite musical composers period. She wrote and performed some other time, one of my all-time favorite songs. Another of her songs, Exaelitus, is right up there. So it was with great excitement that I saw this post by Seth Burn on the site Anime Herald. At the same time, I was also a little apprehensive. After all, it’s hard to conduct an insightful interview with questions that capture the interviewee’s imagination. It is with great relief, and gratitude, that I can say this was a good interview. A very good interview, in fact! Go see what I mean!

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 1 Review โ€“ Itโ€™s Finally Here!

I love reading about shows that touch people. I love reading about shows that have mean something for folks. That’s why I really enjoyed reading this post by ecargmura on the site Arum Journal. ecargmura had read and adored the manga Witch Hat Atelier. So naturally, she looked forward to the anime version. Probably with the attendant nervousness when someone tries to convert a beloved title. Then she watched the first episode of Witch Hat Atelier. Did it do justice to the treasured manga? I’ll let her answer that, but if I’m celebrating that post, you probably have a pretty good idea of the answer! However, please do go check it out for yourself!

Seasonal First Impressions: The Magic Never Went Away โ€“ The Sorcerous Beginnings of WITCH HAT ATELIER

I watched the first episode of Witch Hat Atelier. I’d heard there were very high expectations, but I’ve never read the manga, and I tend not to get caught up in pre-season hype, so I didn’t know what to expect. What I got was a seamless blending of music, animation, and voice acting that ended with me screaming “Oh my God!” at the end of the episode. Or maybe it was “What the hell?” It was that kind of moment, and if you’ve seen the episode, you likely know what I’m talking about. It’s rare for me to get pulled so deeply into a show. It’s also a delight. This post by the yurisorcerer on the site The Magic Planet reminded me of that feeling. the yurisorcerer describes what made the episode so remarkable in a very clear, entertaining way. See if the yurisorcerer talked about what you liked in the episode!

Frieren: Beyond Journeyโ€™s End Season 2: Great White North

I mentioned pre-season hype earlier. There’s something worse: aggressive fans who don’t so much advocate for their show as attack others. It’d be nice if we as reviewers could ignore that kind of thing. But we’re human. When fans of a show try to disparage another (for example, trying to say that Jobless Reincarnation is terrible, which is obviously isn’t), it’s tough for us not to let that affect our opinions. Dewbond, on the site Shallow Dives in Anime, consciously set aside that reaction to take a look at Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2. Did the season measure up? There’s one way to find out!

Re:Zero Episode 67 (Season 4 Episode 1) โ€“ Analysis + Important Details + Aside on Crunchyrollโ€™s Horrible Work

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 just kicked off. I have never seen a show with a more intricate plot. Or a show that rewarded its observant viewers. One of those “observant viewers” is anicritic on the site Thorough Watch. I can confidently say that I’ve not encountered anyone who has analyzed Re:ZERO in such great detail. If any show deserves that level of attention, it’s Re:ZERO. Did you catch the details that anicritic talks about? Did you have the same level of concern with the subtitles? Go see what you think!

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, TCrow. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this arc of Re:Zero plays out.

If I see something I feel really strongly about regarding a Witch Hat Atelier episode, I may post about it, but I won’t be covering it each week as I feel I probably won’t be doing that again for show except for Re:Zero.

    1. You’re welcome! I enjoyed your analysis. Really helps me appreciate the effort Tappei Nagatsuki put into crafting his story and its world.

  2. Wow, looks like everyone is watching Witch Hat Atelier. I really need to see that first episode, the season just started and I’m already falling behind in the seasonal anime! There’s just too much good stuff to watch and I don’t have nearly enough time in the day. Seriously, my day job needs to understand that I have anime watching priorities!

    1. That’s a really familiar feeling! This season seems even “worse” than the previous, in that there’re more things I want to watch and no more time than I had before. I joke about having to wait until retirement, but it’s seeming less funny by the day!

If I go out on a limb (because I hate making recommendations), I think you might well enjoy Witch Hat Atelier. I find it particularly enjoyable if I avoid the fandom. Not sure if they’re “good” or “bad,” but the time I save not reading posts I can invest in more anime.

Please let me know what you think!
