Witch Hat Atelier Episode 4 Review – Stationery Store Trip Gone Awry

The fourth episode of Witch Hat Atelier reminded me of a rule of thumb I use to judge whether a live-action actor was effective in a role. If I watch a performance and think, “Man, such-and-such actor did a good job,” I immediately realize that actor did not, in fact, do a good job. The performance made me think of the actor and not the story. On the other hand, if I watch a performance and think, “Man, that poor soldier! Seeing his friend blown to bits seemed to break him,” then I conclude that this actor actually did a good job. He or she performed so well that I simply experienced the dramatic moment. That’s art.

Watching this episode of Witch Hat Atelier, I began to think things like, “Jeesh, Agott should back the hell off. I mean, yeah, Coco puts the ‘blithering’ in ‘blithering idiot,’ but she’s kinda new, you know?” After the episode ended, it hit me. I had forgotten about luscious animation, and nuanced voice acting, and the spritely story pacing. The show had pulled me into the moments. That’s art. That realization helped me enjoy this post by ecargmura on the site Arum Journal. Ecargmura articulated the whats and whys of my reaction, which is why she’s reviewing the show and I’m not! I particularly enjoyed her observation about Richeh. Go see if she mentions what you liked about the episode!

Merlin’s Musings

The Adorable Alma-chan Wants to Be a Family!

Merlin, on the site Merlin’s Musings, often finds series with two defining characteristics: they’re shows I would have loved to have watched, and they’re shows I’ve never heard of! This week, he changed things up. He found a show that seems like one I’d very much like to watch — but it’s one that I’ve heard of! Kinda shocked me, truth be told. Well, okay, it didn’t shock me that much. But I had so much fun reading his review of Alma-chan Wants to Be a Family! that I’m convinced it needs to get a backlog boost. Go see if the show sounds like something you’d enjoy!

MIB’s Instant Headache

Anime Review – Lycoris Recoil

I’ll be honest with you: if you’re a blogger that reviews a series that I really, really enjoyed, there’s a higher probability that I’ll notice and read your post. That sounds like a positive, right? Well, it’s a two-edged sword sort of situation. Yes, the post attracts my attention. But the more I liked the show, the higher my standards will be for the review. So, when I saw MIB’s review of Lycoris Recoil on the site MIB’s Instant Headache, I almost flinched. The review’s going to be about about Chisato, after all. My standards are through the roof! I almost got apprehensive. But then I remembered, “Oh, yeah! This is MIB. It’ll be fine.” And guess what? I was right for once (or maybe this is the second time today — which would make it a good day!). MIB, of course, nailed it. This might be my favorite Lycoris Recoil review. It’ll be pretty clear why when you read it!

Shallow Dives in Anime

Ninja Scroll: I don’t think there is a single scroll in this entire film.

I enjoy reading seasonal anime reviews. Those reviews often catch something I missed, so they help me enjoy the series I’m watching even more. They can also raise my awareness of shows I’m not watching. That said, I also enjoy a trip down memory lane. There are a ton of older anime that I missed. This week, Dewbond, from the site Shallow Dives in Anime, reviewed a movie called Ninja Scroll from 1993. The review showcases Dewbond’s typical level-headedness. It also shows a uniquely Dewbond ability to analyze tropes and techniques in their historical context. How cool is that? Well, if you go read the review, you’ll see that it’s very, very cool!

Quotorium Reviews: Golden Kamuy

Have you ever read a review that contains a passage that seems to call you out? Not intentionally, of course. That’d be insulting. But accidentally. thequotorium, on the site thequotorium, made an off-hand comment about one of the reasons some folks might not like Golden Kamuy — including how it depicts hunting. Which was exactly why I had stopped watching the show!

I grew up on a farm. It was kinda assumed I’d go hunting and trapping. Reading this post brought back memories of exactly why I had given up hunting and trapping as a kid. The incident involved a .22 caliber pistol, a leg-hold trap, and a muskrat. I recall expecting my dad to be disappointed in me. To his credit, he did not take offense — he supported my decision to not do that sort of thing anymore.

I rather feel like a barbarian.

But after that memory distracted me, I went back to reading the review. And do you know what? It made me regret dropping the show. It made me want to get over myself and give the show another chance. So, onto the back log it goes! Might the show be something that captures your interest? You know how to find out!

  1. TCrow, here’s my write-up on Re:Zero Episode 70 (Season 4 Episode 4):

    https://thoroughwatch.org/?p=232

It took me five hours to write since I was sure that there was an Atlas reference, and I wanted to see how I could interpret it in a way that makes sense and wouldn’t be random reaching, and I was finally able to do it.

    1. I was tired as hell and didn’t sleep last night. The word I should’ve used is allusion as I believe that Shaula carrying Patrasche is an allusion to Atlas of Greek mythology based on the root of the name Patrasche.

  2. TCrow, if I’m interpreting Re:Zero Episode 70 correctly, it could have many implications that are in line with my main theory, which I will also be updating with this episode’s details as I believe with this episode I can make my main theory much more thorough.

    1. You’re welcome! Always great to read your insights. And it was a film I hadn’t heard of before, so bonus!

Please let me know what you think!
