Witch Hat Atelier Episode 7 Review – Emergency Rescue
Another week, another episode of Witch Hat Atelier. This week, I sat in front of my monitor cursing as the episode ended. If you saw it, you know why. And if you didn’t see it? Well, you can do one of three things: watch the episode yourself, check out this post by ecargmura on the site Arum Journal, or watch the episode and then read the post! I recommend the second or third options, personally. I’m enjoying ecargmura’s take on the series, because she a) has some solid insights, b) has read the manga, and c) knows how not to spoil anything despite having read the manga. That last one is a major accomplishment in and of itself! You’ll see what I mean if you read the post!

Confessions of an Overage Otaku
Character Analysis: Wakana Gojo
This might come as a shock, so brace yourself: I really enjoyed My Dress-Up Darling. I know — shocking, right? But want to know something even more shocking? My favorite character isn’t Marin. It’s actually Wakana Gojou! Didn’t see that coming, did you? And if you did, good on you! The reason isn’t exactly simple, but it’s important. But rather than blunder through the explanation myself, please let me point you to this post by The Overage Otaku on the site Confessions of an Overage Otaku. He deftly captured my reasoning and placed it in context in such a way that my first response was, “He nailed it!” My second response was simply an affirmation of the first. Don’t believe me? You and I are Polar Opposites: Opposites Really Do Attract!
I started watching You and I are Polar Opposites recently. I would have finished it, too, but I did something really, really stupid: I started watching The Apothecary Diaries. Good Lord! Some of you warned me it would be good, but — anyway. I will eventually finish watching You and I are Polar Opposites, and there’s a very, very good reason for that. Several, in fact. And this week, I came across a post from Hanime on Anime on the site Hanime on Anime that explains all of those reasons and more. How compelling is this post? It almost convinced me to pause watching The Apothecary Diaries! And that’s saying a lot!

Shallow Dives in Anime
Farming Life in Another World: First the Harvest, then the Bitches.
There are times when I want to watch something that’s pleasant and doesn’t piss me off. Something that lets me forget the insanity into which we’ve descended. It doesn’t even have to be realistic or novel. Just pleasant. Not too long ago, the series Farming Life in Another World fit the bill with ridiculous precision. So when I saw that Dewbond had reviewed it on his site Shallow Dives in Anime, I wanted to see his perspective on the series. I could not have written a better review myself. He laid out why the show did so well within its niche — or didn’t do so well, if you get my drift. And if you don’t, you should probably read the post. Dewbond explained it better!

Anime Review #167: Sound Euphonium
Sound! Euphonium is one of those unusual series about high school that I don’t hate. It’s high school’s fault. Don’t get me wrong. I had friends. I participated in sports (for a couple years before something dawned on me — more on that some other day). I co-founded the school’s literary magazine. But I didn’t belong there. I escaped (graduated) 45 years ago, and I still can’t articulate why I so badly wanted out — and was so glad when it happened. Most series about high school rub my face in that inability. It bugs me. I’m a writer, or at least pretend to me. I should be able to write about stuff. But this topic eludes me.
Sound! Euphonium is a series that I still enjoyed. I suspect at a meta level, it focuses on a specific, creative aspect of high school. I was never in band, but many of my friends were. So I get the mindset. I respect it; I can relax around it. Once past that hurdle, the show’s own charm captured my imagination. Pay particular attention to the section called “What I Liked” and “Characters.” And then you’ll know why this series is so dear to me!
