Frieren Takes Its Time: How care reshapes fantasy pacing
I recently starting writing a new novel (The Fissure Kings Book 1: Semele’s Lament, if you’re keeping track!), so the idea of plot and pacing and points-of-view have been top of mind. It’s hard for me to find new takes on any of those topics. It’s not because I’m so great that I know them all. Rather, it’s because I’m so old I read them all — and new ones are often rehashes of the old! But this week, Darius Ahmadi, on the site Anime Feminist, presented a perspective that was new to me. Using Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End as a starting point was a great way to illustrate his points, too! What did Darius Ahmadi say that was so new and interesting? You know what you need to do to find out!

Tenamonya Voyagers
Anime bloggers have an amazingly broad experience base. It’s not unusual for many of you to talk about series I’ve never heard of. But if I had to name one blogger who does that the most — almost as a matter of course, in fact — it’d be Chua Tek Ming from the site Chua Tek Ming~Anime Power~ !LiVe FoR AnImE, aNiMe FoR LiFe!. This week, he talked about an OVA series from 1999 called Tenamonya Voyagers. The way he described it made me seriously consider tossing it onto my back log. It’s only four episodes, too, so it might fit! Plus, the art style (as evidences in the screen capture he included) made me all nostalgic for that art style. Go see if you have a similar reaction!

The Land of Obscusion
Dr. Dezaki is Out: Looking at (Most of) the OTHER Black Jack Anime Productions
On the site The Land of Obscusion, blogger George talked about the history of an anime character named Kuroo “Black Jack” Hazama. I gotta say, I really enjoy learning about the history of anime, especially those corners of the fandom where I didn’t spend much time. I mean, I’d heard of the character, and I’d seen a lot of screen shots. But when Black Jack first came out, about the only anime I had access to was Mach GoGoGo. Yes, I’m from that generation that had three “normal” channels (and a few on UHF). That was back in the BC era (Before Cable). Yes, we had TVs. Electricity, too! Before I start relating stories of the Great T-Rex Hunts, just go check out George’s post about Jack Black. It’s way more interesting than my dinosaur stories, that’s for sure!

MIB’s Instant Headache
Anime Review โ Her Blue Sky
Not only do I like learning about anime history. I like reading about how one director or writer develops themes across their body of work. This week, MIB, on the site MIB’s Instant Headache, started with the series Her Blue Sky. From there, he traced the themes that the writer, Mari Okada, build on through her writing career. Okay, “traced” and “themes” make it sound kind of dry, and that doesn’t describe MIB’s writing at all. So, please trust me when I say the post is spritely and insightful and a lot of fun to read. So, what are you waiting for?

Shallow Dives in Anime
The Summer of Love VIII with The Garden of Sinners: Remaining Sense of Pain
I’ve been looking forward to Dewbond’s (he’s the proprietor of Shallow Dives in Anime) series about the Garden of Sinners (like this one, The Garden of Sinners Chapter 3: Remaining Sense of Pain). For one thing, the series sounded interesting, and another, it’s one of those topics that was hard to gauge without more information. See, the series is based on a difficult set of concepts: the Nasuverse. What’s the Nasuverse? This is where I hand you off to Dewbond’s post. The topic is enormous, but he scopes it perfectly to talk about the movie Remaining Sense of Pain. After reading this post, I’m even more interested in watching the movies! And that’s without considering they have a relationship to the Fate series!

TCrow, if you’re interested in a show with a beautiful female lead who’s more than she appears to be on the surface, you might want to try Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, which is a Summer 2026 show. The first six episodes have aired, and they’ve been broken up as 12 half-length (or so) episodes with variable length. In contrast to recent shows of this nature, such as Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out and Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You features adult leads who have worries and problems more relatable to adults.
As a non-smoker, I find it a pretty worthwhile watch, and it’s not really an advertisement for smoking either since it does delve into smoking affecting one’s health negatively as well as smoking not being some cure-all for when someone’s feeling down. I was skeptical in initially deciding to watch it, but I find that it’s unusually quaint and enjoyable for a show of this nature with the smoking moreso being a way for the leads to spend time together rather than a celebration of smoking. If you haven’t tried it, I’d give it a shot. The next episode airs in August, so there’s plenty of time to sample it without falling behind.
Gigguk talked about the manga, and he mentioned the anime in his latest video. You have a good eye — I think that is absolutely a show I’d enjoy!
It seemed to me that the smoking was simply a dramatic vehicle to give the two something to do without going to a bar or something else overtly romantic. It gave the show more options for how their relationship will develop.

Even if someone disliked Ram for doing it, her reasons were valid and consistent with her character.
I admired the writer’s courage in that scene. I agree with you — what Ram did and said were completely in character. I’d go so far as to say that if she didn’t react that way, it would have been a lost opportunity.
Darius’s post on Sousou no Frieren was indeed outstanding, TCrow. I don’t think anyone else captured the series’s essence as well as Darius did.
And on another note, I believe Ep. 77 of Re:Zero drastically increases the likelihood of Re:Zero having a satisfactory ending that does the series justice. Here’s my write-up on that:
