Goodbye, Lara Episode 6
I get in these weird moods where I question everything. And I mean everything. Today, I found myself wondering why humans bother with fiction or entertainment at all. Wouldn’t it be better to spend our time and attention doing something directly tied to survival? Just what that might be eluded me, but I had to wonder about the time we spend indulging our imaginations. Then I read this post by Eva on the site AngryAnimeBitches Anime Blog. The way Eva described how the first part of the episode hit her stood out to me. That’s why we indulge in fiction, isn’t it? And then it occurred to me that the reason the conclusion often eludes me is that a lot of the time, I feel like I’m less feeling human emotions and more emulating them. It’s an act to put the people around me at ease. While I think about that, why don’t you head over and see what Eva had to say about this episode of Goodbye, Lara?

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 – 07
A complex, layered story can inspire dozens of reviews, and each can focus on something completely different and be equally valid. Put another way, a shallow narrative doesn’t offer much in the way of interpretative opportunities. To see that idea in action, consider: even if you hate Jobless Reincarnation, you had to admit that it offers fodder for all sorts of different reviews. For a perfect example, consider this review by FlareKnight on the site Anime Evo. He talked about some of my favorite moments in this episode — which were different from what other reviewers saw. What’s more, his different perspective helped me appreciate the episode even more! That’s also a great part of a well-crafted narrative: it gets better the more you think about it! Who Gets to Learn? Education, power, and feminist pedagogy in Witch Hat Atelier
This has been one of those weeks where my brain was all over the place. Not only did I question some of my basic assumptions about life. I questioned how, in the wider world, the level individual critical thinking has sunk so low. It’s like we’re drowning in opinions but are starving for facts and analysis. It occurred to me that the political assault on public education (in the USA) wasn’t an accidental thing, given its contribution to our current situation.
I mean, I can’t really see how anyone with critical thinking skills could hold some of the “popular” opinions that masquerade as rational conclusions. And then I read this post by Zofi Ysa on the site Anime Feminist.
This post talks about the philosophy of education (I’m hopelessly simplifying here) in the world of Witch Hat Atelier. Have you read any posts on Threads or other platforms that use the “this post is not about” framing? This post is about Witch Hat Atelier. At the same time, it could just as easily be not about Witch Hat Atelier. Instead, it could be about today’s intellectual shambles. I’ve rarely read a more clear and rational discussion of this topic — and it’s on an anime site! How cool is that?

Happy Birthday, Norn and Aisha
For a show with a reputation of being bawdy, Jobless Reincarnation sure has a lot of wholesome moments. In fact, most of this seasons episodes have been wholesome. Heck, even the hint of a threesome between Rudy, Sylphie, and Roxy seemed sweet. This post by Roderick J “Jay” Friz on the site D&A Anime Blog expertly captured that sentiment. It really drives home just how impactful these scenes can be. Remember how I mentioned I wondered why we bother with fiction? This is another example of why! Go see what I mean!

Saga of Tanya the Evil II episode 6
I decided not to watch this season of Saga of Tanya the Evil because the show’s too close to my perspective on certain matters. If I watch it, I’ll get all riled up. I mentioned before how I can watch the series vicariously through Theron’s posts on Anime USA. Then I read this post of Theron’s, and it made me really, really want to watch the series. I asked myself what’s the worst that could happen? I guess I could become so enraged about the condition of our world that I go on a rhetorical and political rampage. It would be utterly ineffective, of course. I don’t have anywhere near enough money to be politically effective. But Theron sure does make the show sound appealing! Go see if you agree!
