5 Reasons Why You Should Watch AnoHana
It’s hard to not develop a certain emotional callousness living in the world. That’s one of the reasons the world’s major theological and philosophical schools of thought so often encourage retreats and other ways of withdrawing from the world. I can’t do retreats; I don’t have that kind of time. So, I try to cultivate a split personality: the world-weary cynical writer and the emotionally vulnerable reader/viewer. At the very least, it makes for some really bizarre inner conversations.
The reason I bring this up is that appreciating some anime series requires a certain level of emotional sensitivity. For example, I got emotional seeing Rem this week. She actually brought tears to my eyes. Is that embarrassing? No, and I’ll tell you why: I’m a 60+ ex-farmer who does whatever the hell he wants. That’s why this post by Tesa from All About Anime and Manga caught my attention. Not the farmer bit; the emotionally sensitive bit. Tesa talked about why you should watch Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, and most of the reasons will make sense in light of what we just talked about! Go see what I mean!

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 โ 09
In some ways, episode 9 of Jobless Reincarnation could have been titled “Shizuka Nanahoshi Has Yet Another Bad Day.” I say that tongue-in-cheek, but in all seriousness, Jobless Reincarnation is not kind to its side characters. Someone who gets that, and gets it in context, is FlareKnight on the site Anime Evo. This review, like his other reviews about the series, expertly captured Shizuka’s plight, as well as the spirit in which the episode presented it. If you like the series at all, you’ll really enjoy this review!

How to Build a Series: Komi Canโt Communicate
I feel kinda awkward about admitting this, but I’ve never seen Komi Can’t Communicate. Part of it is that I have a lot of interactions with various communities of folks living with handicaps, and the premise of the series is, well, a bit thin. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because it’s not supposed to be a class in verbal communication challenges. But it is interesting from the perspective of The Overage Otaku’s opening comments in this post on Confessions of an Overage Otaku. It’s not that I crave validation. It’s that from my proverbial position in high Earth orbit, observing human behaviors, it’s nice to see that I get something right from time to time! What am I talking about? Well, there’s one way to find out!

Victoria of Many Faces: Episode 8 โ โI Am Truly Thankfulโ
One of the joys of my Friday night anime blog vacation is discovering series that completely escaped my attention. This week, it was Lesley Aeschliman’s turn, on the site Lesleys Anime and Manga Corner, to talk about a series that I hadn’t heard of. Who knew that Victoria of Many Faces was so interesting and well-plotted? Or was so grounded in farming life — which reminded me strongly of my young ‘un days? Well, apparently Lesley Aeschliman knew, because she’s reviewing the series! And she’s making it sound fascinating, too! Go see what I’m talking about!

Myska
Character Analysis: ๆถผๅฎฎใใซใ (Suzumiya Haruhi)
I have mixed feeling and thoughts about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and its main character, Haruhi Suzumiya. She was a fascinating character, certainly. Mysterious and multi-layered, there was a lot to like. I still have a hard time like it, thought. Thinking back, I wonder if the 2009 version’s eight “Endless Eight” episodes diminished my enjoyment? It’s certainly possible. Regardless, I still like the character, so when I saw Myska’s post on the site Myska, I wondered what new insights I’d learn. And I gotta say, what I learned surprised me! I was looking for something esoteric that I’d missed. Instead, I got the plain facts that I’d missed. But Myska didn’t miss them, and now you can compare notes! Go see if Myska noticed the same things you did about the character!

The Endless Eight callout for Haruhi hits home, I’ve had that same “did those eight episodes retroactively kill this for me?” moment more than once when trying to revisit the series. Myska’s post is on my reading list now to see if I catch what you caught.
On a related note, since your Friday ritual is all about celebrating acclaimed anime from unexpected angles: I’ve been quietly working on a small side project called One Star (https://unetoile.com/en) โ a daily guessing game where each day I write five fake 1-star reviews of a universally acclaimed anime, and players have to unmask the show being unfairly torn apart. Every review is written from scratch by me. The fun is in describing beloved series as unfairly as possible while leaving just enough clues for real fans to catch on.
