Autumn Anime Shows I Want to Watch in 2024

Fall 2024 Schedule

The Fall 2024 anime season is filled with sadness – sadness that I don’t have more time to watch more shows! There are several series that I want to watch. But even more shockingly, there are some I actually found time to watch. I’d like to share those shows with you now.

Thanks to Matt from Matt-in-the-Hat for tagging me in his post!

Fall 2024 Shows I Want to Watch

Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga

I’ve enjoyed the Blue Exorcist from its first season. I don’t even mind that the original series had an anime-only ending that subsequent seasons corrected! It’s easy to root for Rin’s earnest honesty; it’s easy to sympathize with Yukio’s desire to make his own way. Last season treated us to the dramatic story of Izumo’s family and her long, lonely struggle. I’m not sure where this season’s going, but so far, it seems to be laying the groundwork for some major developments on the world-wide stage.

Dandadan

Dandadan (or Dan Da Dan) seemed to come out of nowhere. Animehouse’s review introduced me to the first episode, and I’m so glad they did! The show reminds me a little bit of Mieruko-Chan, at least in terms the supernatural. It also reminds me a little of Undead Unluck in terms of frenetic energy. I really like Momo Ayase as a protagonist, and the animation has a style that really appeals to me.

Despite its frantic pacing, or maybe because of it, this show was surprisingly adept at hitting its emotional beats. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V

I’ve really enjoyed this series from its first episode. We get to watch Bell go from a completely inept little dude to a reliable, powerful warrior. And all the while, he maintained his essential kindness. Also, he picked up a huge collection of women-folk who would like to find some way to snag his attention. One of those women is Syr, and this season seems to be all about her. She’s worked as a waitress in a local tavern, and until now, she seemed to be no more than a sweet, kind fan of Bell’s. But in this season, we got to see her walk into an audience with the goddess Freya and talk to her on a nearly equal footing. That got my attention! This series is shaping up to be typical DanMachi, and I’m excited to watch it.

Let This Grieving Soul Retire

Krai Andrey suffers from imposter syndrome. Is it deserved? I’m not sure; honestly, I don’t think he’s sure, either! He has flashes of real competence; he also has flashes of pure incompetence. There’s one cast member who’s a big fan of his: Tino Shade. She’s a relatively new adventurer in Krai’s clan, and she’s quite taken with him. Annoyingly so, because the guy just doesn’t treat her with the respect she deserves. I think. Because by the end of the second episode, he was making decisions that got my hopes up that he’s not a complete idiot. Well, as long as Tino figures prominently, I’ll probably tune in. And the animation’s eye-catching!

I like her style. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan

I’m not sure where this show is going. I’m not sure I like Noel Stollen as a protagonist. But I like the hard edge of the decisions Noel made in the second episode. I liked his tough pragmatism. And I liked how Walter (I’m going from memory here – I hope I got the name right) just couldn’t handle Noel’s decision, and so he left the profession. The combination of difficult decisions and their consequences got my attention. Now, we’ll have to wait and see if they deliver!

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3

This show… What’s impressed me, since almost the first episode, is how honestly, and sometimes brutally, it treats Subaru, its protagonist. The story is wildly complex in all the best ways, and it has a deep, intricate, and captivating stable of characters. It’s writing is gutsy, too. I mean, Rem’s been unconscious for a couple seasons now, and she’s one of the more popular characters. Who does that? Given Subaru’s super power, Return by Death, there’s no telling what’s going to happen, and I think that’s one of the show’s keys to success. I’m looking forward to seeing how Subaru deals with Sirius Romanée-Conti (did I mention this series has amazing villains?).

What Are Others Watching?

  1. I was looking forward to Uzumaki, but it sounds like the quality takes a nosedive in episode 2.

I’ll watch Natsume, might give Dandadan, Youkai Gaikko, and Kinokoinu based on Arum Journals reviews. I’ll probably check out Kekkon Suru tte too.

    1. I’m finding blogger reviews are a much better barometer of whether I’m going to like something than the commercial reviews. Not sure why that is — maybe it’s a mindset thing!

  2. A season full of decently entertaining new shows, but nothing that particularly stands out. All the best shows are continuations and sequels. For me that’s Natsume 7 and Senguko Youko above all, but also Shangri La Frontier and Re:Zero.

Probably my favourite new show so far is Kinoko Inu; the Mushroom Pup. The combination of heartfelt grief for a pet and a Sanryo-style mascot character works really well for me.

  3. Overage Otaku here: I’m still mining the vast underground of old stories – just got done writing about Maison Ikkou (1986-1988), for Pete’s sake – so I don’t worry so much about new seasons BUT I’m waiting for Dan Da Dan, too! I want it to all be out first so I can binge it, though. The Ranma 1/2 redo looks interesting, too, because I like to see how they fool with the story the second time around a la Fruits Basket.

But what I REALLY want to see isn’t coming out in 2024. Next year we can look forward to the latest from Shinichiro Watanabe, Lazarus. Plus I guess Dress-up Darling and Blue-eye Samurai are getting new seasons, too.

    1. I haven’t heard anything about Shinichiro Watanabe’s work. I’ll be on the lookout for that! Dress-Up Darling, too! I was just rewatching the first season!

  4. I’m reading Dandadan at the moment and cannot stop laughing. I can’t wait for the season to finish so I can binge it.

I’ve still got to catch up on Dungeon IV and Re:Zero 2 before I can get to the newest offerings. I’ll have to work out exactly what I’ve selected to watch, but I also have to catch up on the summer shows first…

Please let me know what you think!
