Quick Summary of Campione! Episode 12
In Campione! episode 12, “The Sword of Ama no Murakumo,” Godou Kusanagi finds himself disorientated and nauseous. At the end of the previous episode, his date with Erica Blandelli had ended badly, with Godou ending up on the astral plane. Now, he came upon a small house, and its occupant was about to make his day even worse. Meanwhile, Erica had followed Godou, but she landed in a completely different area. Ena Seishuuin, who represented an organization that objected to Godou associating with an Italian like Erica, was hot in pursuit. Why did Seishuuin seem unaffected by the astral plane’s effects? Why was Erica having such a hard time maintaining her fighting poise, or even breathing? Just what kind of sword is Seishuuin using?

Best in Show Moment for Campione! Ep 12
Seishuuin was so laid back that nothing seemed to bother her. Until this moment… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: A Japanese Concubine for a Japanese King?
I had a hard time picking a Best in Show moment in this episode. To be honest, it might be my least favorite of the series, though by no means do I think it was bad. It just wasn’t as filled with the character moments as the previous episodes. So, I’ll go with a moment of levity that Godou and Erica were able to create, if indirectly, for Seishuuin.
The setup for this actually starts in episode 11 when Seishuuin suggested that in terms of Godou’s harem, Mariya take care of the “sex and child-bearing” and leave everything else to her. Seishuuin had a unique sense of humor, and she’s surprisingly laid back. Well, until her sword possessed her.
That’s what happened in this episode. In her zeal to replace Erica as Godou’s right-hand knight, Seishuuin allowed her sword to possess her. Since it’s a divine instrument, her power sky-rocketed, and she almost killed Erica. Only Godou’s arrival saved her (08:11).
Godou arrived just in time to block the possessed Seishuuin’s attack. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Godou and the divine sword clashed, and Godou was able to wound it — but not before Erica collapsed. The divine sword used the diversion to retreat, leaving Godou to figure out how to keep Erica alive.
Godou figured out how to save Erica (and I’m going to gloss over how he inserted his divine power into her). The important point is that Erica was now not only able to survive, but fight way above her previous cap.
Delivery: So, Seishuuin Can Be Embarrassed!
As Godou and Erica enjoyed lying in each others arms, Erica sensed the arrival of the divine sword. It was no longer possessing Seishuuin, but it had partially absorbed her. Erica told Godou that she’d take on the god while he rescued Seishuuin.
As Erica launched her attack, Seishuuin woke up, look around, and realized she was sunken almost to her neck. She calmly observed that “I guess Ena was absorbed by the Ama no Murakumo” (19:49). She might as well have been noticing that the sun had just gone behind a cloud. Her calm continued when Godou called up that he was going to save her.
“No, I couldn’t cause you so much trouble,” she said (19:54). “It’s fine, King. Just consider me a memory!” The thing is, I don’t think she was kidding! I think she was just that laid back.
Seishuuin seemed really chill about her own impending death. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Godou leapt to the god’s clavicle. Telling that she really was just too laid back, he grabbed her under the arms and heaved. She came free and the god’s form convulsed, throwing them to the ground.
I really think that just being naked (as a result of the sword possessing her and consuming her clothes in the process) would not have been enough to embarrass Seishuuin. But ending up straddling Godou’s hips as he lay on the ground after the divine sword threw them off?
That was enough to embarrass her (20:35).
But you know what? She recovered enough to summon some clothes and thank him for saving her. She even kissed him on the cheek.
Erica wasn’t too happy about that.
What did you think of Godou’s journey into the astral plane? Was was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!
