Cat Planet Cuties Episode 2 – Quick Summary

In Cat Planet Cuties episode 2, “I Dropped By,” Eris introduced Kio to her Assisteroids, little sentient robots who helped her with her tasks. At the end of an enjoyable day at the library, Kio offered to buy Eris some ice cream. But Maki Itokazu and her Beautiful Contact faction had different ideas. Turns out, so did the CIA and Japanese government. Will Kio survive their intervention? Will Eris? And just what were the orders that Aoi Futaba received at the end of the previous episode?

Cat Planet Cuties Episode 2: Kio felt grateful for his uncle's firepower

Moments like this help Kio appreciate family. Capture from the Blu Ray.

I don’t blame Kio for not immediately questioning his Uncle Yuuichi Miyagi when the man threw a flash bang grenade and rescued Kio from Beautiful Contact. After all, Kio had been tranquilized, he was worried about Eris, and rather a lot was going on.

Now Kio rode in his uncle’s Jeep with his uncle driving. About a dozen Assisteroids crammed into the back seat. All of them were planning to rescue Eris, and his uncle was giving him pointers.

Handing him a Smith & Wesson Model 656 pistol, Yuuichi explained that he had loaded it with tranquilizers. That meant Kio could use it without worrying about killing anyone.

Smiling nervously, Kio asked (11:55), “Um, Uncle, what do you do for a living?”

That’s a good question! I’d like to know, too.

Cat Planet Cuties Episode 2: Eris didn't seem like she was scared

Strange. She doesn’t look like a captive fearing for her life. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: The Characters Make This Series Shine

After watching this episode, it dawned on me that the characters are, for me, the show’s greatest appeal. Manami wants to get a job with the CIA at the local military base, so she’s trained herself on weapons and spycraft. She even partnered with a prototypical blonde CIA agent. Yes, when Kio calls and asks her where he could find Eris, she tried to dissemble. And failed miserably because it was Kio.

Aio is a top-notch operative for, well, whatever agency she’s working for. She makes life and death decisions all the time. We saw her efficiency in killing in the first episode, so we know with certainty that she’s no push-over. Yet, she made an on-the-spot decision to spare Kio. Then, she and Manami together decided to go help him rescue Eris.

Cat Planet Cuties Episode 2: Aoi made a difficult decision in the field

Aoi could have decided to kill Eris. But she didn’t. Capture from the Blu Ray.

They’re strong. They’re decisive. It doesn’t hurt that they’re also attractive. Kio has no idea how lucky he is to have those two in his court. And then there’s Eris.

Eris acts a lot like an airhead. There are moments she reminds me of Lala from To Love Ru. And then there’s moments she reminds me of a more gently playful version of Rika from Haganai. And damn it, now I want to rewatch Haganai again.

The bottom line is that I like how Eris isn’t a ditz. She’s part of a culturally and technologically advanced civilization, and she acts like it. My favorite moment is a great example.

Delivery: Eris, Cool Under Apparent Pressure

Some faction ordered the CIA to capture Eris. She’s in a tube, restrained, when some arrogant dude starts making threats. Shockingly (in a good way), he refuses to answer her questions. I half expected him to start monologuing, but he showed at least a little discipline. But he did say that he intended to kill her and would not allow Earth to recognize Eris’s people.

The first time I saw this, I wondered why she didn’t seem in the least bit worried or scared. I had indications she was intelligent and had access to advanced tech. But I hadn’t connected all the dots. So I took notice when she asked (14:25), “Why do you not officially refuse any relations with us?”

She paused, considering, then said, “Do you have a prior commitment?”

Cat Planet Cuties Episode 2: Eris had the situation under control

There was a good reason she didn’t seem scared. She had the situation under control. Capture from the Blu Ray.

I love how a little moment like gives me a glimpse into Eris’s character. She’s not only calm; she’s thinking things through. With very little evidence, she figured out this guy’s faction was dealing with another alien race – one we learn about later. The show has several moments that let Eris’s intellect shine, and given how a show could treat a character who looks like Eris, I thought it was a welcome relief from cliche.
