Caw Out Award: Most Heart-Rending Scream of the Week

We all know that war never changes (well, if you’ve played Fallout 3, 4, or New Vegas, you know!). But not everyone knows that! And Princess Yuuki Soleil learned about war in about the worst way possible. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

We’re only two episodes into The Price of Smiles (at the time of this writing), but the show’s laying the foundation to deliver some solid emotional punches. Up this week? Well, I don’t want to spoil too much, so I’ll put it this way:

The royal court and her entourage have been keeping Princess Yuuki Soleil blissfully in the dark about the border war. They’re not trying to manipulate her or stage a coup d’état. They’re just trying to protect the sensibilities of a 12 year old girl whose royal parents were taken away from her too soon.

As if there’s ever a time that’s not too soon…

But you can probably guess what kind of scenario that sets up!

Without giving away the ending of episode 2, let me just say that Yuuki comes face to face with something that shatters her heart. Something for which she was utterly unprepared. Something that showed everyone the folly of trying to keep her in the dark.

Her reaction was the most emotional and painful scream of the week.

I felt like I should do something to recognize her pain, and a Caw Out Award is the best I can do!

Sometimes, I identify so strongly with characters that I feel guilty when I enjoy the drama when they go through tough times. I blame Re:Creators… In this case, maybe Stella Shining, even though she’s on the other side of the conflict, can help Yuuki regain her smile. Stella seems like a kind sort. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

    1. Thanks! And you’re not alone! I thought this was going to be a light season, but I’m finding that I’m actually watching more than last season!

Well, I’m _trying_ to watch more. I haven’t found out how to manufacture time yet!

  1. Yes, keeping her in the dark was pretty silly no matter how you look at it. She was never going to be an effective ruler without actual information and all its done is shocked her horribly when confronted with the reality. Still felt bad for her though in that scene.

    1. Yeah — sometimes the most effective kindness is the truth. Not only did poor Yuuki have to find out what she found out. But now she can’t trust the people around her — they basically lied to her!

Please let me know what you think!
