In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 1, “The Worst One I,” Ikki Kurogane is preparing for a new year at school — where despite his near constant efforts, he’s ranked last. His life takes an unexpected turn when he walks into his room to find Princess Stella Vermillion in the middle of changing her clothes. It didn’t help that he offered to take his clothes off so they’d be even. Why was she in his room? Why is school Director Kurono Shinguuji seeming to enjoy their conflict — so much that she suggests they settle the issue with a mock sword battle? And what can the battle possibly prove with Ikki literally the worst student in the school and Stella literally the best?

Episode 2: The Worse One II

Review Of Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Episode 02: The Sister Arrives And The Shadow Of The Past

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 2, “The Worst One II,” Stella Vermillion is becoming more and more comfortable with Ikki Kurogane, to the point where she’s willing to share his water bottle! She’s apprehensive when he tells Stella that his sister, Shizuku Kurogane, is coming to campus. Stella relaxes when he tells her Shizuku is his blood sister, so it’s all good — but perhaps her relief is premature! Later, after a brief confrontation, Shizuku references the trials Ikki faced at home, and immediately tried to retract it. Stella decides the best approach is to be direct, so she straight out asks Ikki about it. The answer wasn’t at all what she expected.

Episode 3: The Worse One III

Review Of Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Episode 03: Errant Whipped Cream And Falling With Style

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 3, “The Worst One III,” Stella Vermillion tried to work up the courage to ask Ikki Kurogane on a date, but Ikki’s sister Shizuku Kurogane beat her by seconds. Along with Shizuku’s roommate Alice Arisuin, they go to the mall for what they hoped would be a carefree day of shopping. What they didn’t expect was for Stella and Shizuku to become hostages with dozens of other women and children while Ikki and Alice barely avoided being machine-gunned by terrorists. Can Stella and Shizuku keep their cool long enough to help the hostages? Can Ikki and Alice survive long enough to help?

Review Of Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Episode 04: Ikki’s Poker Face And Stella Takes A Stand

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 4, “The Worst One IV,” Stella VermillionShizuku Kurogane, and Alice Arisuin easily win their first matches. Ikki Kurogane tries to put on a calm, brave face, but his first opponent, Shizuya Kirihara, not only has powers that are the least susceptible to Ikki’s attacks. He also mercilessly taunted Ikki last year and completely humiliated our hero. Is the new instructor who’s a previous tournament winner Nene Saikyou right? Does Ikki really have a chance? Or is the rest of the school right when they chant “Worst One!” as Shizuya pierces Ikki again and again with invisible arrows?

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 6, “Sword Eater I,” Ikki Kurogane takes on a member of the student council in the tournament — and wins! Not to be outdone, Stella Vermillion also takes on a student council member — and also wins! Things are looking up for Ikki, which is probably why he wasn’t surprised when he realized he was being followed — by a young woman who was now hiding behind a tree! Ayase Ayatsuji wasn’t a stalker; she was a wannabe student! When Ikki learned her father was a famous samurai that he idolized, he was as excited to meet her as Stella and his sister, Shizuku Kurogane, were upset to have another competitor. Why was Ayase so intent on learning from Ikki? Who was the brutal bully they ran into at a restaurant? And why did Ayase’s father disappear from the spotlight?

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 7, “Sword Eater II,” Ikki Kurogane agrees to meet Ayase Ayatsuji in the middle of the night, even though Alice Arisuin warned him it was a trap. Alice was right — Ayase tricked Ikki into using his Itto Shura so he couldn’t use it again in their match later that day. ikki and Stella Vermillion went to Yuuri Oriki, the teacher who was scheduled to comment on Ikki’s match against Ayase. But what he asks of her causes Stella to spit out most of her coffee. It’s clear that Ayase is cheating — so what is Ikki up to? How does Stella feel about Ikki’s plan? And just how far is Ayase willing to go to win?

Episode 11: Another One: The Uncrowned Sword King I

Review Of Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Episode 11: Touka Feeds A Multitude And Of A Mouse And A Man

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 11, “Another One: The Uncrowned Sword King I,” Ikki Kurogane meets with the school’s director, Kurono Shinguuji, who warns him that politics are afoot. Later, Ikki and Stella Vermillion visit the student council, where they see an expected side of Touka Toudou. Then Touka feeds many children, with Ikki’s, Stella’s, and the student council’s help. After that, as Ikki and Stella return, Alice Arisuin and Shizuku Kurogane meet them with terrible news: somehow, the story of their romance has gotten out. Almost as if on cue, Mamoru Akaza, Ikki’s father’s henchman and the ironic head of the Ethics Branch, pulls up and ushers Ikki into limo — and into custody. Will Stella, Shizuku, and Alice ever see Ikki again? What is Mamoru trying to accomplish? And is there anything Stella can do to help?

Episode 12: Another One: The Uncrowned Sword King II

Review Of Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Episode 12: The Measure Of A Man And Stella’s Backhand

In Chivalry of a Failed Knight episode 12, “Another One: The Uncrowned Sword King II,” Mamoru Akaza tells the director that Ikki Kurogane somehow missed the car to bring him from the detention center to the arena. Of course, the reality was very different. Though Ikki was, exhausted and malnourished, he still somehow managed to run almost all of the way back to the school. With his strength fading, his self-doubt assails him. Will he be able to overcome not only his self-doubt, but the shadows of his past? Is there anything Stella Vermillion and Shizuku Kurogane can do to help? And even if he arrives, in the shape he’s in, would he have any chance of victory against the goddess of lightning?
