Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 11 – Quick Summary
In Engaged to the Unidentified episode 11, “Enjoying the Handkerchief,” Hakuya struggled with a nearly unsupportable weight. He had to find a gift for Kobeni! Mashiro tried to help, but her advice only made things worse. Even the reliable Mayura struggled to find the right things to say! Can Hakuya find the right gift? Is Mashiro right when she says Kobeni will think less of him if he stumbles? And what will Benio do to upset Mashiro – and how far will Nadeshiko have to go to rein her in?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Turns out that Mashiro has trust issues. But only in one specific case. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Mashiro did a bad thing. Actually, Mashiro did two bad things. First, she stayed out pretty late by herself. That’s not a good idea even in Japan. Second, she decided that since it was almost dark, she could use her non-human jumping powers. Remember how her mom, Shirayuki Mitsumine, could leap about on rooftops? Yep. Mashiro can do that, too.
Let’s put aside for the moment that Niko Oono saw her. That’s a separate problem. The real problem is that Kobeni found out. We got to see Kobeni switch to mom mode. She lectured Mashiro on the dangers of staying out late. I’ll hand it to Kobeni. She was firm, yet gentle. She’ll be a good mom someday!
Kobeni explained that it was bad enough that she let Niko, of all people, see her. Kobeni also explained that if would have been bad if Mashiro “ran into a weirdo or got mixed up in a crime” (07:06).
That put the fear of $deity into Mashiro that she said (07:11), “Do you mean Benio?”
To be honest, I think Benio deserved that.

Kobeni had to ask. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Setup: A Windy Walk Home
I loved the moment when Hakuya realized his handkerchief matched Kobeni’s and not Mashiro’s and Benio’s (02:56). For most of this episode, that was going to be my favorite moment.
And I’d completely forgotten about what happened at the end (21:48). I like being able to so immerse myself in a story that I forget what I used to know about it.
Doesn’t that sound so much better than “I forgot?”
This realization made Hakuya happy. Capture from the Blu Ray.
The way the director set up my favorite moment felt perfect. Benio, Hakuya, and Mashiro had a lot of fun going to see the movie. Most of them even enjoyed the restaurant afterward, though Kobeni thought the eggs were a little flat. They were walking home, reminiscing about their time. They had a warm, conversational vibe going.
The wind started to pick up.
Earlier in the episode, while walking home from school alone with Hakuya, she asked if his bangs ever got in the way. His evasive way of answering “no” let her know something was up, but she was too polite to pursue the issue.

Now, as they walked home from the movie, they got hit by a huge blast of wind. Enough to blow Hakuya’s hair up. And let Kobeni see where Hakuya’s right eye had been.
Haruka Terui, Kobeni’s voice actor, packed a ton of feelings into the sentence (18:38), “How did you get that scar?” Everything we knew about Kobeni prepared us for it. Kobeni knew what the scar represented. She knew it. But she didn’t want to know. Her honesty strove with her guilt, and her honesty won. She asked.
It was very cool how Hakuya tried to put her at ease. He told her (19:31), “I was hurt because I didn’t do enough. You’re not to blame. If I’d done more, you wouldn’t have been hurt at all.”
Hakuya tried to put Kobeni at ease. You can guess how well that went. Capture from the Blu Ray.
In effect, he tried to tell Kobeni not to worry about it. Which had exactly as much chance of working as saying to the planet Jupiter, “Hey, would you hold up in your orbit for a minute? Got some ducks that want to cross here.”
This show knows how to convey the weight of these moments between two people. In the grand scheme of things, the stakes are low. But for Kobeni, not hurting anyone is a big deal. For Hakuya, keeping Kobeni safe is a big deal. And now, those two things have clashed. There’s nothing wrong with a little quiet poignancy, is there?
