Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2 – Quick Summary

In Engaged to the Unidentified episode 2, “It’s Not Bad Having a Loli Sister in Law,” Kobeni continued her quest to adapt to having Mashiro as her sister in law and Hayuka as her betrothed in the only way she knew how: by doubling down on her innate kindness and making them as comfortable as possible. But the peace she achieved showed alarming cracks when Mashiro made a reference to her shared past with Hayuka – a past she cannot remember. Why did Hayuka use one of his rare moments of speech to change the subject? Why can’t Kobeni remember? And just how many aliens are planning to abduct Mashiro?

Favorite Quote from Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2: Benio really liked to mess with Mashiro.

To Kobeni, who watched the conversation, Mashiro was very, very transparent. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

I’m going to say something obvious here, but it’s to set the context for my favorite quote: Benio really, really enjoys messing with Mashiro. There’s even a method to Benio’s attacks: she’s trying to hone in on what Mashiro likes. Benio, in other words, was looking for leverage.

She’s kinda scary.

Benio tried bribing Mashiro with tea sweets in the student council room. She described various treats while keeping an eye on Mashiro for her reaction. Then she spoke of scones, and clotted cream, and even various kinds of jam.

Mashiro, unwilling to be drawn in without a fight, leapt to her feet. She said she would never believe Benio had those things. Then she said Benio was far too arrogant – using the student council room for her own nefarious purposes.

“Would it kill you to have more humility?” Mashiro asked in desperation (03:08), because she clearly didn’t want Benio to know how much she really wanted those scones with clotted cream. “And you have the gall to treat the student council room as your personal property. You simply cannot enjoy tea on school grounds.”

The last part was sheer desperation. Finally, Mashiro, overwhelmed, ran off, saying, “That only happens in comic books!”

Yeah, Benio really likes messing with Mashiro.

Favorite Moment from Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2: Hakuya didn't want to upset Kobeni -- or take advantage of her

Hakuya was thinking of Kobeni’s feelings when he made his decision. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Setup: A Good-Hearted Show

One of the things I really like about this show is that the main characters have good hearts. They care about each other (even if it comes out in really weird ways – I’m looking at you, Benio!). This kind of situation isa challenge to drama, of course. Or at least it can be. But here, the show adequately compensates in other ways, which leaves me free to just enjoy people trying to be good to one another.

Which is exactly why I chose this show to review this season, despite there being a lot of promising new shows.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2: Kobeni genuinely enjoyed making her guests feel welcome

Kobeni seemed to enjoy making Mashiro feel at home. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

An example of what I mean started when Kobeni served hamburger for dinner. Mashiro loved it, of course. Dinner conversation turned to Kobeni knowing she used to visit their house when she was younger, but not remembering any of the details.

Mashiro’s an innocent who has no sense of decorum, so she asked if that meant Kobeni didn’t remember the accident, either. Hayuka immediately tried to redirect the conversation to Mashiro needing to finish her vegetables. Mashiro seemed to get the message, but Kobeni didn’t. She asked for more details. That’s when Hayuka said (07:11), “It’s nothing.” His tone was final. Benio continued eating as if nothing had happened.

Delivery: Hakuya Consideration for Kobeni

At this point in the story, we don’t know what happened. We only know something went down. Back in their room, Mashiro asked why she couldn’t talk about what happened, mentioning that Hakuya was also hurt – making it clear that whatever happened involved injury. How serious was the injury?

“She survived thanks to you,” Mashiro said (07:28), still struggling to understand why she couldn’t tell Kobeni.

Hakuya said that he felt responsible for her getting hurt. Was that the real reason he didn’t want to tell her? Did he simply feel guilty? Mashiro said he shouldn’t feel responsible for an “accident,” and besides, Kobeni might get closer to him out of gratitude.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 2: Mashiro finally understood Hakuya

Mashiro seemed to finally understand where Hakuya was coming from. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

This is where Hakuya showed what kind of man he is.

“She shouldn’t have to remember,” he said (07:55). “I don’t think it’s right to guilt her into marriage. That’s why I don’t want you to tell Kobeni about my injury. She’ll take it to heart.”

He’s not scheming to trick her into falling in love. He’s not trying to be something he isn’t. Hakuya honestly wants to protect her from some unpleasant memories, and he wants her to get closer to him honestly – without tricks. Yes, I buy into that old adage that honesty’s the best policy. But sometimes a lie of omission can prevent unneeded pain, or at least delay it until a better time. Hakuya’s thinking of Kobeni, and that’s why I like this moment so much.

What did you think of Nadeshiko Kashima showing up and smacking Benio so she’d stop bothering Mashiro at school? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
