Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 5: Turns out Shirayuki likes to take rides on public transportation

Benio wasn’t even surprised. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Benio stood watching Mashiro and Hayuka say goodbye to their mom, Shirayuki Mitsumine. This interaction fascinated Benio – endlessly – and she carefully committed the whole episode to memory.

Then it came time for Shirayuki to actually leave. Much to Benio’s shock, the woman just jumped straight into the air and starting leaping from rooftop to rooftop.

Benio, by not not shocked by such displays of supernatural ability, asked Mashiro why her mom bothered using public transport to visit them.

“She likes to go for rides,” Mashiro said in a voice that suggested she’d seen this kind of thing more than once (20:12).

This show’s gentle humor is exactly what I need at this point in our history!

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 5: Shirayuki seemed shocked at how little Mashiro and Hakuya had told Kobeni

Shirayuki seemed surprised that Mashiro and Hakuya had not already brought Kobeni up to speed. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Shirayuki’s Gentle Manipulations

I’m pretty sure Shirayuki is not even close to being as ditzy as she pretends to be. She set the tone when she bought some dried Natto and gave the box to Mashiro as a present – ostensibly to celebrate her new-found ability to eat the stuff. Of course, Mashiro had to admit she still couldn’t eat, which gave her mom a chance to gently chide her.

Then she gave the impression of “accidentally” mentioning that their kind (meaning hers, Hayuka’s, and Mashiro’s) were dwindling. Then she mentioned that he had used his “power” to save her life. By this point, Kobeni’s head is spinning (literally, as we find out later).

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 5: Shirayuki casually let slip that her people were dwindling in number

Shirayuki casually let drop that her “kind” were dwindling. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Mashiro, outraged that her mom had undone days of careful planning, tried to explain that they hadn’t told Kobeni about stuff like that. Shirayuki appeared shocked. She looked from Mashiro to Kobeni. As if to test just how little they had told Kobeni, she blurted out (15:21), “You haven’t told her we’re not human, either?”

Delivery: Helping Kobeni Remember

That shocked even Hakuya.

The disclosure triggered some of Kobeni’s memories, like her first meeting Hakuya and petting the pretty black dog. But what I liked about this moment is how it showed just how much in control of the conversation Shirayuki was. She acted like I’d expect a mountain spirit to act – heedless of the plans of others, pursuing a course of action that she thought best. She defied convention because she herself wasn’t so much unconventional as a-conventional. The concept just didn’t apply to her.

Kobeni experienced an insight into Hakuya’s kindness towards her – because Shirayuki had acted. Capture from the Blu Ray.

I almost picked the moment when Kobeni realized why Hakuya had randomly patted her head throughout the episode – which was another moment that Shirayuki’s seemingly absent-minded comments that helped Kobeni realize. But that moment, too, just showed how much Shirayuki had moved the plot forward during her brief visit. She was a character of consequence who personified a courteous version of a free mountain spirit. I enjoy characters who bring that kind of freedom and energy to a show!

What did you think of Hayuka trying to dodge Kobeni’s questions about Mashiro’s age (00:43)? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
