Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 6 – Quick Summary

In Engaged to the Unidentified episode 6, “I Know! I’ll Fill It with a Sister-in-Law,” Kobeni struggled to accept and and make sense of the idea that Mashiro and Hakuya were not human. Complicating matters was that Kobeni’s mother had known! Can Kobeni accept this incomprehensible fact? Will she know what go get Hakuya for Valentine’s Day? And can Benio convince Mashiro to partially transform so she’ll have animal ears?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 6: Nadeshiko was used to dealing with Benio's moods

This wasn’t Nadeshiko’s first rodeo. Capture from the Blu Ray.

The secondary characters in this series add a depth that I really enjoy. Take Nadeshiko Kashima, for example. She puts up with a ton of Benio’s nonsense, yet she remains Benio’s closest friend (that we know of). How’s she do it?

She maintains a sense of perspective.

When Benio learned that Mashiro could transform into an animal, Benio immediately begged Mashiro to partially transform. She wanted to see Mashiro with animal ears. So much so that she said such a sight would “motivate her for today!”

Mashiro had to explain that partial transformations were not a thing. This crushed Benio’s hopes and dreams. So much so that she sat in the student council room, chin in her hands, staring into the distance.

Nadeshiko didn’t even pause her work when she asked (05:14), “What? You pick something strange off the floor to eat?”

What worried me is how matter-of-fact she sounded – like this wasn’t the first time she’d had to ask!

Favorite Moment from Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 6

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 6: Kobeni was happy Hakuya liked her gift

Kobeni is such a wholesome young woman. Just seeing Hakuya’s reaction to her gift makes her happy. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Mayura Momouchi, Kobeni’s Awesome Friend

I just mentioned Engaged to the Unidentified’s delightful secondary characters. Mayura Momouchi is another great example. She’s Kobeni’s best friend. She’s down to Earth, she’s unflappable, and she had a knack for setting things right with a single, well-directed question.

She set up my favorite moment when she visited Kobeni’s household the evening of Valentine’s Day. Kobeni had struggled hard to give any chocolates to Hakuya. In the process, she had triggered a series of misunderstandings that ruined her day and Hakuya’s day.

Hakuya thought she hated him after hearing several boys lamenting that no young women had given them any chocolate. Hakuya took that to heart; he thought it meant Kobeni hated him.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 6: Hakuya was super bummed when he thought Kobeni hated him

The thought that Kobeni might hate him wore heavily on Hakuya. Capture from the Blu Ray.

That night, when Mashiro offered to share her supernatural creature chocolates, he declined in a way that made an eavesdropping Kobeni think he hated chocolate. Left to their own devices, they probably would have ended the day despondent and estranged.

Enter Mayura. She gave a box full of chocolates with supernatural creatures to Mashiro in the hopes of completing Mashiro’s collection. Then, as if it were no big deal, she asked (20:23), “Hakuya, did you get your chocolate from Kobeni?”

Kobeni was embarrassed. Mashiro observed that Kobeni had made the chocolate earlier; Mayura brightly observed that it must be that Kobeni just hadn’t found the right moment.

Delivery: The Simple Things in Life

Benio tried to interrupt with two ridiculously huge chocolate cakes, one for Kobeni and one for Mashiro. Even mom came in and interrupted by giving Hakuya some chocolates. Kobeni seemed to see that as her chance, because she came up behind him and, blushing, asked if he’d like some chocolate from her.

Flowers sprang out of the air all around him – and she hadn’t given him anything yet. When she actually handed them to him, the flowers turned into an entire field. He was moved and gazed at the box. Kobeni was at first embarrassed. Then she smiled, pleased that he had accepted her gift and that it had made him so happy.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 6: Hakuya really, really liked Kobeni's gift

I think it’s safe to say that Hakuya liked Kobeni’s gift. Capture from the Blu Ray.

How wholesome is that? How fundamental to the human condition? Kobeni’s this sensible, grounded young woman. She’s wishes ill to no one (though she did faux-threaten Mashiro with her least favorite foods this episode – even Koveni has her limits!). Seeing how she reacted to Hakuya’s simple joy at receiving her gift made my day.

I really needed something like that this week.

What did you think of Mashiro’s quest for supernatural creature toys? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
