Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 8 – Quick Summary

In Engaged to the Unidentified episode 8, “Only a Little Sister Can Soothe Sadness Over a Little Sister,” Konoha Suetsugi decided she would get to the bottom of the situation between Benio and Mashiro. She even called out Mashiro with explicit instructions (politely given) to Kobeni to stay away. What does Konoha have to say to Mashiro? Can Kobeni actually stay away? And will Hakuya just stand by and let it happen?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 8

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 8: Mayura sees a lot more than she lets on.

Mayura says the darndest things. Capture from the Blu Ray.

I think I’ve talked before about how much I like the secondary characters in this show. That includes Kobeni’s best friend, Mayura_Momouchi. She the quietly supportive type. She’s always there for Kobeni, and she never makes a fuss. She’s also quite a lot of perceptive than she lets on.

Take my favorite quote, for example.

Kobeni looked on as Konoha told Mashiro they needed to talk. Kobeni even asked if she should tag along, but Konoha waved her off. As the two walked away, Mayura stepped out of the classroom and asked if the two were friends. Then, seemingly out of the blue, she asked (14:17), “Like Mashiro, Suetsugi seems a little different from normal people, huh?”

Kobeni had to come up with a non-committal answer fast!

My favorite part of all that? Mayura didn’t make a big deal of it. She just laid it out there. She’s a cool friend.

Setup: Character Based Humor is the Best

This episode’s primary purpose seemed to be setting up the next episode. Usually, I find those episodes dull. But Engaged to the Unidentified can make even transitions something special. In this case, it achieved that through the use of its expertly executed character-based humor.

My favorite moment is the culmination of several moments. I won’t cheat by stringing them all together, but there are two that fit so closely together that together, I’m going to declare them my favorite moment.

It started just after my favorite quote. Konoha and Mashiro strode toward the stairs. They had decided to talk on the roof, where no one would hear them. The two of them walked side by side, in perfect step.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 8: Konoha and Mashiro are very competitive

For a while, they walked side by side. Capture from the Blu Ray.

That is, they walked that way until Konoha decided to try to assert herself by walking a little faster (14:58). Not to be outdone, Mashiro increased her pace.

You can probably guess where this is going. And you’d be right!

Soon, they were jogging. Then, they broke into s dead sprint. There were neck and neck as they raced up the stairs. They were so evenly matched that they both had to step on a landing to catch their breaths. Then, they resumed the dead sprint until they arrived on the roof.

Delivery: The Wind’s Majestic Roar

They faced each other from about ten meters apart. It must have been close to sunset, because the light came at a dramatic angle. The wind roared. It was an epic showdown!

The key idea here is that the wind roared. First, Konoha pleaded her case with passion and vigor. Next, Mashiro expressed her perspective on the matter. The two looked at each other. Mashiro looked annoyed and exasperated.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 8: Mashiro realized the wind was too loud

Mashiro realized this just wasn’t working. Capture from the Blu Ray.

The two closed to within a meter of each other before saying to each other (16:46), “Wanna go somewhere else?” “Let’s go somewhere else!”

The wind was so loud and dramatic that they could not hear each other! It’s one of those moments that’s not Earth-shattering or tearfully moving. But it’s a heck of a lot of fun to watch, especially after the two exhausted each other racing up the stairs. It’s gentle humor that doesn’t hurt anyone and that doesn’t demean anyone. That’s exactly the kind of humor I’m in the mood for right now.
