Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 9 – Quick Summary

In Engaged to the Unidentified episode 9, “How Humiliating, I’m So Embarrassed,” Kobeni overheard Konoha propose to her own betrothed, Hakuya. Kobeni had told Hakuya not to tell anyone they were betrothed. So why did she feel the way she did? She tried to sneak away, but Kobeni’s athletically challenged condition betrayed her. What will she say to Hakuya? What will Hakuya say to her? And was Konoha serious about the proposal?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 9: Hakuya was not happy with Oono prying into Kobeni's affairs

Hakuya is very, very serious about representing Kobeni’s interests! Capture from the Blu Ray.

How serious is Hakuya and protecting Kobeni? Very, as it turns out.

Most of the romantic comedies I’ve watched draw out misunderstandings. Not this show, and it’s one of the reasons I like it so much. Kobeni had just witnessed Konoha asking Hakuya to marry her. Kobeni felt upset, and she felt guilty. It’d be easier to say she was just confused.

When she tried to explain it, with a hint that she could understand if he wanted Konoha, Hakuya flat out said that he was engaged to her. For Hakuya, it wasn’t even a question. Then, out of nowhere, Niko Oono popped up and asked who was getting married.

As Oono pestered Kobeni remembered that Kobeni didn’t want anyone to know about their engagement. So he spoke.

The HIDIVE’s translation was the one I liked better (05:03): “Someone’s getting buried in the garden.” The Blu Ray’s translation was, “Hooked… murder is afoot!”

Either way, it was clear. Hakuya was very, very serious about protecting Kobeni!

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 9: Konoha did not understand why Kobeni wanted to keep her engagement a secret

Konoha didn’t understand Kobeni’s reluctance. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Engaged to the Unidentified’s Commitment to Character

This series has such a good handle on its characters. It drives the humor, like what we saw in my favorite moment. It also drives emotionally powerful moments, like the one I’ve chosen as my favorite.

Remember how Kobeni overheard Konoha asking Hakuya to marry her? Her proposal didn’t even register with Hakkuya. From his perspective, he was engaged to Kobeni, and that was that. Anything else was an annoying distraction.

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 9: Kobeni tried to step aside for Konoha

Kobeni tried to give Hakuya space in case he wanted to accept Konoha’s proposal. But it wasn’t even a question for Hakuya. Capture from the Blu Ray.

But for Kobeni, Konoha’s question represented something else. It represented a cold slap in the face. It represented the crystallization of everything that Kobeni either could not face, or did not know how to face.

I have to say, it was hilarious how Kobeni tried to sneak away but ended up falling on her butt. That was a very “Kobeni” moment.

So was her trying to lie and say she didn’t hear Konoha propose. That prompted Konoha to say (00:54), “She’s a shockingly bad liar!” And she is. At her core, Kobeni is an honest young woman.

So honest that she knew there was unresolved business between her and Konoha. So at school, she asked if she could talk to Konoha in private. In a secluded area at the end of a disused corridor, Kobeni asked Konoha to keep the engagement private.

Delivery: Kobeni Has to Confront Her Feelings

That confused Konoha. She said she had no plan at all to spread it around, but she was also confused about why Kobeni would want to keep it quiet. She concluded that Kobeni must be against the marriage – which played into Konoha’s own motivations.

That’s another thing the show does right. The side characters have interesting and relevant motivations. Konoha’s mom had told her that if she ever encountered a male of her same race, she should claim him as a husband. So she interpreted Kobeni’s reluctance in that context. She concluded that Kobeni was against the idea.

“You must really hate the idea if you want to be so secretive about it,” Konoha said (15:19). “Why don’t you just break off the engagement? It’s impolite to your betrothed to keep up the pretense. Yeah.”

Engaged to the Unidentified Episode 9: Kobeni realized she had feelings for Hakuya

Kobeni squeezing her cuff was a subtle way to convey her inner turmoil. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Konoha was psyched. She thought she had a chance with Hakuya! From Kobeni’s perspective, the question forced her to confront her own feelings. The result surprised Konoha as much as it surprised Kobeni.

Kobeni wept.

Just seemingly out of nowhere, from Konoha’s perspective. But from our perspective as viewers, we knew this moment was coming in some way, shape or form. It was authentic to Kobeni’s character, and it further endeared me to her. She didn’t ask for this situation, and she was trying to deal with it. Her lack of experience meant she didn’t know how. Now, in her own, roundabout way, Konoha had helped.

What did you think of Benio’s reaction to Hakuya leveling up at the end? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. Yeah, I love how in this episode, Konoha was the antagonist but she was also the catalyst to push the romance between Hakuya and Kobeni forward. Unlike in other rom-com anime, in this series the two main characters aren’t nudged closer by helpful wing-men, but rather by people that are against the relationship. First it was Hakuya’s little sister thinking she needed to test Kobeni and then Konoha challenging Kobeni”s position of betrothed.
