Fire Force Season 3 Episode 11 – Quick Summary

In Fire Force Season 3 episode 11, “The Great Kaiju Battlefront,” Akitaru Oubi and the rest of the 8th Special Fire Brigade learned that the pillar rising from the sea wasn’t their only problem. A gigantic monster rose with it – and advanced on the shore. Of all of them, only Shinra Kusakabe had the speed to meet it before it made landfall. Will Oubi let Shinra attack – knowing that any bystanders or other Special Fire Brigades will brand Shinra a traitor? Can Oubi afford not to act with the lives of so many innocent humans at stake?

Fire Force Season 3 Episode 11: At least Kurono was going to try

Well, at least he’s going to give it a shot. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

To file under “The right thing for the wrong reason,” I present my favorite quote from the episode.

It was fun seeing some characters from the previous seasons, like Takeru Noto/Juggernaut and Ogun. They brought with them a certain sense of connectedness that I liked. But they also brought back another character that I liked less, but who was no less memorable.

I’m talking about Yuuichirou Kurono. Dude was a real piece of work (and by work, I mean crap – I’m trying to keep this PG-13). He likes bullying people. In terms of morality, the only person I can think of with less is his handler, an executive. But we’ll leave him unnamed.

Kurono doesn’t want to do anything. Well, except bully the weak. So it takes a lot to motivate him. As the kaiju threatened the shore and all the weak people there, Kurono didn’t seem in the least bit motivated to stop it. Then the executive warned him that if the monster won, all those targets for his bullying would be killed.

“I’ll do it,” he said with reluctance (07:10). “If that thing makes landfill (sic), all the weak idiots I enjoy so much will be killed.”

I think he meant “landfall,” but hey, he’s a bully. I can’t expect much from him!

Favorite Moment from Fire Force Season 3 Episode 11

Fire Force Season 3 Episode 11: Oubi gave his decision plenty of thought.

Oubi gave Shinra’s request a ton of thought. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

There was a lot of setup in this episode, wasn’t there? I thought the episode was setting things up for Shinra to do something heroic, which I guess he did. He stopped Juggernaut from hitting the pillar. To get knocked unconscious, rescued by the scummy Kurono, and captured by Fairy. Which was both disappointed and frustrating.

I’d like to see the guy get a chance to be heroic!

Well, that wasn’t in the cards, and I still have to pick a favorite moment. So, I’ll go with something that happened early in the episode. The 8th Special Fire Brigade, in exile and being sheltered by Benimaru Shinmon and his people, watched the monster approach the shore.

They’re fire fighters. It’s in their nature to want to protect people, but none of them had the wherewithal to get there in time. None of them except one.

“Captain Obi, with my legs, I can get there before it makes landfall! The only one who can deal with it or fight it on the water is me! Please authorize me to go!” Shinra said (04:49).

Fire Force Season 3 Episode 11: Shinra pleaded his case

Shinra pleaded his case. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I liked that moment. But what I liked better was how hard Oubi thought about it. Too often, we see leaders make snap decisions. That’s all fine and good, but all decisions aren’t that easy. Oubi had to balance a lot. They had been branded traitors, so when anyone in a position of power caught sight of Shinra, they’d try to arrest him. Shinra going alone was dangerous for Shinra. There were multiple other considerations.

And Oubi gave each angle its due. He thought hard about it.

Finally, he looked up at Shinra and said (05:03), “All right.”

Shinra was off like a shot.

I admire good leadership. I don’t think it gets enough screen time. On the other hand, brash and dangerous actions seem to get way more than their share. Yeah, this is the perspective of an old guy talking, and yeah, it can result in less action. But I’d argue it results in more important action – and less unnecessary casualties.
