Fire Force Season 3 Episode 9 – Quick Summary
In Fire Force Season 3 episode 9, “Holy Sword, Resurrected,” Vulcan’s plan to engage Arthur’s imagination worked well. Too well. Arthur misinterpreted the careful clues that Vulcan had planted, and he had led them into the Nether. The Nether’s not safe, even for a Third Generation like Arthur. And the longer they stay, the worse it gets – with Yu succumbing first. Can Arthur, Vulcan, and Lisa hold on long enough to find the faux metal for Arthur’s sword? Or will something find them first?

Favorite Quote from Fire Force Season 3 Episode 9
Lisa disappointed both Arthur and Yu. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
There are definite rules governing Arthur’s imagination and how people interact with it and him. I’m not sure I can articulate all of them, but a couple are pretty straight forward.
First: respect the vision. Vulcan put a lot of effort into thinking up the quest. It went off the rails, but he still put in the effort. Arthur sensed that and his imagination accepted it as a worthy offering.
But Lisa? Lisa didn’t respect the imagination. She got impatient, decided it was time to end this charade, and used her powers to pretend to be a level’s final boss. She even disguised her voice.
Arthur, though, was having none of it.
“Lisa,” he said, looking at her with disappointment (08:36). “Why is a grown woman playing silly games like this?”
Arthur’s imagination was front and center in this episode, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
Favorite Moment from Fire Force Season 3 Episode 9
At first, Maki thought Arthur might be devastated. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: With a Family Like That…
Okay, let me just say that from a comedic perspective, I had to laugh at Arthur’s parents. Especially when the show revealed that they’d been busy down in the Nether – Arthur had siblings!
But that dad in me is quite cross with ma and pa Boyle. Good Lord, man! Dump their kid because of debts, go into hiding in the Nether, make more kids, then just act like nothing happened when they met again.
Okay, there’s the whole “yeah, we know the secrets of the world” thing and the “we’re on a quest to save humanity” thing. For them who knows? It might actually be real. But I can’t get past the idea that Arthur’s this good kid, flighty, sure, but a good kid. He deserved to have parents who loved him.
Somehow, this woman – who can’t be bothered to raise Arthur – knows the secrets of the universe. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
My favorite moment in this episode speaks to found family. Arthur’s biological parents might have abandoned him. But he absolutely has a family now. What’s more, they get him.
Look at the lengths to which Vulcan went to support Arthur. Lisa didn’t quite get it, but towards the end, she showed a glimmer of understanding. I loved how Yu was outraged on Arthur’s behalf. These people are his real family how.
And they’re not the only ones.My favorite moment was when Maki came in to check on Arthur. Vulcan had just recreated Excalibur from a rocket’s nosecone (seriously, where did Arthur’s dad find that thing?). Arthur, a serious expression on his face, was reading the none ma and pa Boyle left him. You know – the note that said, “See ya, bye!”
Delivery: Maki’s There for Arthur
Maki’s a normal human being. She thought Arthur would be devastated, or at least angry. But when she looked at him, she saw him adopt an expression of shining confidence.
“Maki had a thought,” the voice said as Maki registered surprise (19:35). “As she gazed at the profile of this man who didn’t understand he’d been abandoned by his parents twice, she thought, now that he’d obtained the real holy sword, he had become the Knight King who would save the world.”
Arthur sees things I don’t see. Which is probably a good thing for me! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Maybe I’m reading too much into this. But for me, this was one of those moments like Samwise seeing the star above the desolation of Mordor. In that moment, Sam saw the wider world, unencumbered by despair or minutiae. It allowed him to remain focused on his mission: to get Frodo to Mount Doom.
Arthur, is his own way, has put aside irrelevant minutiae, too, to focus on defending humanity from the coming cataclysm. And Maki, a member of his found family, chose to recognize that in him. That’s why it’s my favorite moment. She supported him because she wanted to. Even if he might not be completely aware of it!
