Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 13 – Quick Summary
In Fire Force Season 3 part 2 episode 13, “Unaware,” Shinra was quite surprised to regain consciousness. He was even more surprised that he couldn’t move. Someone had manacled him to a bed! The last he remembered, he had traveled with Inca into the distant past. Where’s Inca? Where’s Shinra, for that matter? And who restrained him?

It’s nice to know Shinra’s priorities. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
The scene felt very dramatic. Shinra woke up in shackles. He had no memory of how he’d gotten there. There was no sign of Inca, who had accompanied him in that Adolla Burst journey at the end of the first half of the season.
Things started to look up when Akitaru, Takehisa, and Arthur walked in. But they dropped the fact that Shinra had been acting like someone else for three months – three months he didn’t remember.
Still, Shinra remained calm. He stayed cool. He tried to talk to his captain, lieutenant, and friend. Shinra kept trying to figure out what happened.
When Arthur assured the captain and lieutenant that Shinra was, in fact, Shinra again, they released him. He caught his reflection in the window. He saw that his black hair was now blonde.
That’s when Shinra lost his composure.
“What the hell happened to my hair?!” he cried (02:36). “Huh? No way! No! It can’t be! Is this a piercing? What happened? My black hair is a precious gift from my mother!”
Missing three months? A minor concern. Bleaching his hair? Complete disaster.
At least that confirmed that Shinra was back.

It seemed very easy for Iris to do. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Shinra Wasn’t Himself
I had no idea what was going on (in a good way!) in the first scene. Why was Shinra blonde? Had he somehow merged with Inca? Even when the captain, lieutenant, and Arthur came in, I was still uneasy. Do you know why?
Arthur acted sane. He exhibited insight and reason. In that moment, I knew fear.
Seriously, I thought it was a great way to kick off the season.
My favorite moment this week was between Shinra and Iris. To set the stage, do you remember back in the first part of this season, back in episode 6, how Iris somehow boosted Maki’s powers, and only Viktor noticed? Well, it seems like only Iris and Viktor still are aware that something’s going on with Iris. Because that’s how she ran afoul of evil Shinra.
To be filed under “not cool.” Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Apparently, during the three months that Shinra couldn’t remember, his Doppelgänger had inhabited his body. That being was everything Shinra wasn’t, personality wise – including being inclined to backhand Iris across the face when she approached him.
It seems that she had tried to talk to him. Nothing more. So Doppelgänger Shinra smacked her.
Of course, the rest of Fire Force Station 8 looked dimly on that event. It seems to have been the event that led to Shinra being shackled to the bed. I’d also like to think it was so serious that it allowed him to reassume control of himself.
Which is a state I hope continues.
Anyway, Iris heard Shinra had returned to normal, or what passed for normal. She wanted to try to talk to him again. I thought it was adorable that Maki escorted her to the meeting (11:56). The implication was pretty clear: if Shinra made one wrong move, Maki would take care of things.
Delivery: Iris Is Very Understanding
As an aside, I was relieved to see how Shinra reacted to learning he’d struck Iris. The guy’s decent at heart.
Shinra apologized, and of course Iris accepted it. Then he did something I didn’t expect, but in hindsight should have. He asked why not-Shinra had acted that way. He wanted to understand what had happened. Shinra wanted to make some sense of it; he just couldn’t live with himself otherwise.
That seemed to put Iris further at east. “Shinra-san,” she said (13:54), “do you remember the day when you and I went to the Baptism Church together?” He did, of course, so she added, “I promised that if I was ever worried about something, I’d come to you first, didn’t I?”
That’s when she shared that she can make fire now. She’s a Third Generation. That’s what she tried to share with him with Doppelgänger Shinra smacked her.
What I liked about this moment was how iris had remembered her promise, and how even though not-Shinra had struck her, she recognized that Shinra was back. She reached out to him and trusted that he wouldn’t hurt her again.
The non-Adolla version of Shinra felt terrible for what had happened. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I know that’s uncomfortably close to a really negative trope. I get how it’s awfully close to a pattern that suggests an abusive relationship. To me, that’s proof that those terrible things inflict damage beyond the individual relationship. They taint our ability to see a moment like this for what it is: Iris understands what happened, so she forgave Shinra and re-affirmed her trust in him.
Now, if later Shinra turns on her, I’m going to be seriously pissed. But for now, I liked this moment. Forgiveness can be a good thing, after all.
What did you think of Shrina’s talk with Akitaru at the end? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
