Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16 – Quick Summary

In Fire Force Season 3 part 2 episode 16, “Savior,” the eighth pillar makes it appearance, and its guardian is someone no one in Fire Force predicted. Obviously, the guardian’s power levels were off the charts, and the guardian’s attacks easily wrecked anything Fire Force could throw at it. Is there anything Shinra can do to stop it? Will Shou arrive in time to help? And why does Iris look so concerned?

Favorite Quote from Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16: Talk about hard-headed!

One has to admire the man’s dedication. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

There’s a lot to be said about having a creed and sticking to it. Assuming that the creed results in behaviors that help the individual or society, said creed not only gives on a clear idea of what to do. It provides a checklist to ensure those things got done.

It’s like having a checklist for changing the piston rings in a combustion engine. You have to remove the parts in a certain order, use certain tools to remove the damaged rings and install the new ones, and reassemble the parts in a certain order.

You really don’t want a handful of parts left over when you’re done!

My favorite quote this week is from Gustav Honda as he prepared to launch himself at the titan protecting the eighth pillar. And as an aside: how hard does the dude’s skull need to be to function as a warhead?

There’s a joke there, but I’m not seeing it.

Anyway, just before launch, he said (05:17), “Tomorrow I will wake, open the window, and bathe in the light of the sun! I will go to work, perform my duties, and return home to my waiting family! And every night, I will think, ‘Today was a good day!’ Tomorrow will be another of those days! And those days must continue!”

Those sounded like great goals for a productive life!

Favorite Moment from Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16: Shinra was very glad to see Shou

Shinra finally realized what was going on. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Cults Suck

This episode reminded me of a lesson I learned in my late 20s. Maybe early 30s. And it’s this: my study of theology made me forget a lot. Specifically, it made me forget how easily people allow themselves to be fooled.

I’ll give Fire Force credit. It perfectly captured that problem when they showed some of the peoples’ reaction to the identity of the eighth pillar’s guardian. Remember how one of them said (10:32), “Why, Raffles-sama?” Right afterward, another said, “Raffles-sama is angry. We are fools, and this is our divine punishment. This is divine punishment! Please forgive us, Raffles-sama!”

As far as I know, based on what the narrative presented to us, I saw no indication that they’d been doing anything that would violate the teachings of their church. But, they saw a gigantic version of what looked like their founder, and they assumed they were at fault.

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16: People sadly relinquish their wills when they join a cult

There’s something about cult membership that reduces rationality. But maybe that’s stating the obvious. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Why?

It’s the same feeling when I see people today say, “He took our farms. He wrecked our whiskey business. He tore our families apart. We are fools, and this is our divine punishment. This is divine punishment! Please forgive us, not-Raffles-sama!”

Yeah, I’m a bit ticked off that eighty plus years of effort by great men and women got pissed away for, well, nothing. We got no more from our current situation than the people there got from Raffles before Shinra drilled a hole in his head.

Delivery: No, Really, Cults Suck, But Family Reunions are Cool

If that doesn’t make sense, count yourselves lucky. It means you can live without the current behaviors (which are, if you’ve studied theology, approximately one hundred and eighty degrees from the Gospels – “anti”, one might say) constantly reinforcing the idea that your choice to give up hope years ago was not only valid, but prescient.

Enough negativity (or realism – is there a different anymore?). Let’s get to my favorite moment. It’s a positive, family-friendly moment. Fairy had been kicking Shinra from one side of the sky to another when Shou arrived. Shou started giving him advice on how to attack Raffles (which I still think is a ridiculous name, but that might be the point). Shinra actually started arguing tactics before he froze.

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 16: Shinra began by debating tactics with Shou

At first, Shinra started arguing tactics. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

“Shou!” he yelled, grabbing his brother in a hug (15:19). Given that this is Fire Force, it had a pretty high ridiculous factor, because Shinra was upside down relative to Shou.

It was a perfect moment for Shinra, because he’d been trying to reunite with his brother for most of the series. It was a great moment for Shou, too, because he’s finally entering the fight on Shinra’s side. It’s just a real bummer that the cult turned their eventual victory into an occasion for despair.

Such is the fruits of cultish behavior, I guess.
