Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 21 – Quick Summary
In Fire Force Season 3 part 2 episode 21, “Dragon and Knight Surge Toward the Heavens,” Dragon has lived his whole life in despair. No one could stand before him. He was a force of nature. And so now, in that despair, he waits for death. And inadvertently gave Arthur a path to victory. If he can take it. Because if he can overcome Dragon, he might kindle in Dragon’s heart the beginning of hope. But no one – no thing – has been able to do so in the past. Can Arthur succeed where everything else has failed?

Favorite Quote from Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 21
Talk about apocalyptic! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
This episode was one big fight scene, so it’s going to be tough to extract a single favorite quote. But I think I can pull it off. Heaven knows both Arthur and Dragon gave me plenty of choices!
Arthur has always been a man of great imagination. At the same time, he was a man of vague details. I’d trust Arthur to cut a planet in half (which he did in this episode). But there’s no way on God’s green Earth that I’d trust him with a grocery list. The details just wouldn’t stick in his mind.
Unless it was an epic quest to claw sustenance from demon grocers, all armed with flaming swords, guarding produce harvested in Asgard, or something.
So, when Arthur, standing on the surface of the misshapen moon, summed up his intentions with Dragon, I thought it perfectly encapsulated his character.
“I will save Yu, defeat Dragon, and do something about him,” Arthur said (18:11). “That’s what I promised!”
He got the broad strokes right. The details? Eh, not so much!
Favorite Moment from Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 21
Arthur reminded Shinra whose turn it was. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Lots of Great Moments
I did not expect the battle to leave the planet.
It’s Arthur. I knew it would be over the top. But actually fighting a large portion of the battle on the Soul Eater moon? I did not see that coming. And I’m glad about that. It’s been awhile since a show went this far beyond my expectations.
It’s honestly tough to pick a single moment that stood out. This episode had everything I wanted out of a Shonen battle. Early candidates included:
Dragon had the time of his life. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
- Dragon knocking Arthur into the sky before ridiculing him for hiding, and Arthur responding (06:31), “Don’t get the wrong idea! Lightning from the thunderclouds gathers in the holy sword.”
- Arthur earning Dragon’s respect after that strike, with Dragon saying (09:35), “Whelp! No, Arthur! Well done! What we begin now will be no mere trampling, but a battle! This will be my first battle.”
- Arthur standing on the words announcing his Star Ring use (15:30)
- Arthur letting us know he knew the cost of this battle when Dragon said (18:34), “”That would be greedy. There is no one who can face me and return alive.” with Arthur replying, “I have known that from the start!”
- Dragon’s final words, which were (21:02), “That was brilliant, Arthur. Well done. So you’ve vanquished me. Here, at the end of my life of boredom, you showed me hope. Thank you! I’m glad you were here, Arthur.”
Delivery: Arthur Boyle, Team Player
All of those were great moments. They played well to Arthur’s strengths; they served to build up the threat Drago represented. All of them were candidates. But my favorite moment went beyond my expectations – kinda like the rest of the episode!
Arthur didn’t just win. Arthur didn’t just give his life for the cause. No, he went beyond that. Arthur handed the baton on to his teammate.
“Hey, Shinra!” he called out (21:39), his body cut in half, his left hand gone along with his right eye. “ How long are you going to play the devil? I have become the Knight King!”
Then he looked at the planet he’d cut in half and the general havoc he’d wrought and added, “I suppose I may have overdone it a bit.”
You know it’s overdone if Arthur thinks it’s overdone. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
He could have just floated there quietly and savored his victory. Instead, he used his efforts to invigorate his teammate.
In the end (assuming that this is, in fact, the end for Arthur), Arthur wasn’t just a great individual contributor. He was a greater team player. That’s something I think we don’t see enough of, and I was glad to see it here.
What did you think of Dragon’s back story? What were your favorite moments? I’d love to hear your perspective in the comments!
