Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 24 – Quick Summary

In Fire Force Season 3 part 2 episode 24, “Answer,” the world has ended. Dark flames had claimed the Earth’s surface. Only the Evangelist, its apostle Haumea, Shinra, and Shou remained. Their only chance had been for Shinra, as the hero, to hold on to hope. But seeing everyone on Earth perish, including his beloved comrades in the Eighth Special Fire Brigade, had driven him to a state of rage and despair. Can Shou pull him back before it’s too late – before the Evangelist’s victory is complete?

Favorite Quote from Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 24

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 24: Excalibur is born

I’m thankful it didn’t break into song. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m a huge fan of Soul Eater, so I bet you can narrow my favorite quote down to a handful.

The one I’m going with (and really, any number of quotes qualified) came early in the show. Just after my favorite moment, in fact (which also had a ton of competition).

At the end of the previous episode, Shinra had fallen into despair. I can’t blame the guy. He had just witnessed the death of his entire planet – and his dearest friends. It took Arthur’s gentle reminder to bring him back to the present.

Arthur reflected on his victory by complaining what a pain in the butt Shinra had been (02:23). Then he asked his sword, Excalibur, for confirmation.

The sword glared back at him.

Before I could absorb what the meant, it also uttered the famous (infamous) words from its namesake in Soul Eater

“Fool!” it said (02:29).

I must be a simple soul, because that made me unreasonably happy!

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 24: Shinra didn't want Arthur to smack him again

I can’t blame Shinra even a little. An orbital strike had to be painful! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Worldviews Underpin Fiction

Speaking of being unreasonably happy, am I the only one that got chills when Shinra, Shou, and Mari engaged Soul Resonance (11:27)? They even captured the aesthetic. For an instant, I felt like I was watching a scene from Soul Eater, only with more modern animation techniques and three participants instead of the standard two.

That, plus Excalubur’s famous utterance and the style of the buildings Shinra Bansho created, were such a treat. I’d heard that Fire Force was the precursor to Soul Eater, so I expected something. Seeing how it’s actually playing out is a blast.

Oh, and Hibana reuniting with her sisters at the end? Very nice.

Does the philosophical and theological combat make enough sense? I have a suspicion that something got lost in translation. Maybe not the literal translation, but the cultural mindset between eastern and western philosophies and theologies. But that just makes it interesting. It’d be dull if it played out as I expected.

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 24: The animation looked great

Even if I thought the world views diverged, it was a ton of fun to watch the animation. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Some bits didn’t feel solid to me. For example, the Doppelgängers didn’t mesh in a seamless way to me. That meant the reveal of Mari being the Doppelgänger was cool and all, but it didn’t really strike me. That might be me as a viewer forgetting something important.

It wouldn’t be the first time!

I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again: I’d rather see a work of fiction try to tackle something big and not quite stick the landing than see a work play it safe. Fire Force certainly didn’t play it safe!

My favorite moment personifies the absurdity that I love about this series. The last we saw Arthur, he was floating with only a torso and most of an arm. This week, I’m guessing based on the sheer power of Arthur’s imagination, he’s whole again. Still in orbit, but whole. And somehow able to hear what’s going on despite it happening on the surface. Of a world without an atmosphere (because Shinra Bansho created that later).

Delivery: Arthur’s Orbital Bombardment

Haumea thought she’d won. She’d help drive Shinra into despair. Shou, too, thought it was over. He could only watch as Shinra prepared to launch himself into the final battle – a battle that would end quickly and seal the Earth’s fate.

That’s when the plasma sword named Excalibur, wielded by the insane Arthur, descended from orbit and smacked Shinra in the head. Seriously. That’s what it did (01:13). The strike was accompanied by a very Arthur insult directed at Shinra: “You blockhead!”

That’s almost my favorite part.

Arthur demanded to know Shinra’s intentions: would he act as the hero or a devil?

“Arthur,” Shinra said (01:43). “What am I supposed to do? Everyone in the 8th… And it’s my fault…”

Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 24: Shinra had a tough day

Shinra was in a very dark place. I can’t blame him. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Arthur, as empathetic as always, smacked Shinra in the head again. From orbit.

“Don’t whine at a time like this!” Arthur said (01:51).

“It’s because it’s a time like this that all I have are complaints!” Shinra said.

My favorite moment? Arthur raised his hand to smack Shinra again. And instead of arguing or getting defiant, Shinra flinched.

That exchange was one of the most Fire Force things I’ve seen. It’s right up there with Arthur self-healing in orbit. It’s right up there with Soul Resonance making its debut. And it’s one of the reasons I’ve had such a blast watching this series.
