Freezing Episode 5 – Quick Summary
In Freezing episode 5, “She Is Rana Linchen,” Satellizer el Bridget does the unthinkable: she takes the initiative to speak to Kazuya Aoi – just the two of them. Is she finally beginning to think about maybe, just possibly making him her Limiter? Meanwhile, Rana Linchen arrived on campus at the request of her tribe’s Patriarch. Unfamiliar with the complexities of a city campus, she wanted for hours. Will she ever find the administrative building? Or is she doomed to wander for all eternity?

Favorite Quote from Freezing Episode 5
I don’t like seeing sad Rana! Fortunately, the melancholy passed quickly! Capture from the Blu Ray.
Rana Linchen is here! It’s a good day. Coming from the boonies myself (I grew up on a farm in Ohio), characters like Rana resonate with me. She’s honest, down-to-Earth, and very bright. However, also like me, she can miss little details.
Like how to read a map.
Apparently, whoever dropped Rana off at West Genetics did so at the point farthest from any human. She had stopped to study a map when Kazuya happened by. I love her openness and enthusiasm – when she saw Kazuya, she cried out in pure joy and hurled herself on it.
Dude had no idea how to react. Fortunately, she’s a kind soul who just wanted to find the principal’s office. As Kazuya likewise is a kind soul, he offered to guide her. In person. Because let’s face it, her sense of direction seems as bad as Saya Sasamiya. Well, maybe almost as bad.
As they arrive at the office, Rana felt comfortable enough with Kazuya to confide that (08:23), “This place is too big! I thought I was doomed to wander forever!”
In a school with as many Pandoras who apparently exhibit some kind of psychotic behavior, Rana’s a breath of fresh air.
Favorite Moment from Freezing Episode 5
I wish I knew enough about physics to calculate exactly how strong Rana had to be to catch that weapon mid-flight. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Setup: Sore Losers are Sore
Did Arthur Crypton step things up in this episode or what? First, he let Satellizer know that Kazuya had been injured (18:26). Then, he lured Rana away so Satellizer could have some time along with Kazuya in the hospital (19:20). I thought those were upstanding things to do.
Kazuya continues to impress me with how considerate he’s trying to be with Satellizer. Sure, he can be clueless, but his heart is in the right place, like when he worried that (10:33), “s she forcing herself to, for me?”
That said, a scene that’s among my least favorite in the series sets up my favorite moment. You probably know what scene I’m talking about: it’s the one where the three second year students bully Kazuya, Kaho Hiiragi, and Arthur.
A military school like this is going to have some percentage of students who are idiot bullies. But these three took it too far. That they felt like they could get away with it speaks poorly of the school’s discipline in general, though maybe I should cut them some slack. Instructors like Yumi Kim seem to have their hands full keeping Pandora from killing each other.
Kaho gets points for trying. She showed courage – a demonstration the bullies could have learned from. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Still, and maybe this is my naivete showing, I expect better from these folks.
To set the scene: the three of them (who you might notice I’m not naming) were close to maiming Kazuya and severely injuring Kaho and Arthur. But Rana, attracted by Kazuya’s brief exertion of his freezing effect, arrived on the scene, just in time to catch one of the bullies attempting to hack into his back battleaxe of some kind. The bully’s intent was to carve the stigmata from his back.
Delivery: Rana Makes an Impression
Now, think about that for a second. Their job – the basis of all their privilege – was that they are the ones to defend humanity against the Nova. And here was one idiot, just because her feelings were hurt, willing to weaken their defense to teach Kazuya a lesson.
What. An. Idiot.
Well, Rana put an end to it. She caught the haft has as the blade was about to bite into Kazuya (17:02). She did it like it cost her no effort. Like it was nothing.
In a deceptively calm voice, she asked (17:05), “Just what, Madam, are you doing to this individual?”
Now, you’re a combatant. You have trained in battle. Wouldn’t you take note of how easily this woman stopped your strike? Doesn’t that tell you something useful – like, use caution because she’ll rip your head off if you’re not careful?
Nope. The idiot bully accused her of being some country hick. Rana exercised restraint – which is the trait of a warrior who’s really good. Self discipline, after all, is a thing. Rana explained that she wouldn’t let the woman harm Kazuya. The bully’s response? She tried to attack.
The three idiots in aggregate were no challenge for Rana. Capture from the Blu Ray.
You can guess how well that went. Really, my favorite part of the scene was Rana just catching the axe in mid-strike. I won’t deny, though, that seeing Rana use her very efficient moves to put the three bullies on the ground was very satisfying.
To be honest, I just don’t get why bullies are tolerated. I can think of nothing useful they offer to society or individuals. I guess it’s just hard for some folks to come to terms with their own limitations and become comfortable with the idea that improving themselves bit by bit does not mean harming others.
What did you think of Satellizer beginning to open up to Kazuya? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!
