Freezing Episode 9 – Quick Summary

In Freezing episode 9, “Godspeed of the East,” the most powerful current Pandora, a third-year at East Genetics named Cathy Lockharte, asked to meet Kazuya Aoi. The reason? Cathy carried some of Kazuya’s sister’s Stigmata. Turns out, Cathy did not want to be a Pandora. She wanted to be a novelist. But fate had other ideas. Shortly after Kazuya left, the Nova sirens went off, and Cathy had to go into battle. That’s when she found out this incursion was different from the previous attacks – lethally so. Will her friendship with Kazuya be short-lived?

Favorite Quote from Freezing Episode 9

Freezing Episode 9: Rana was enthusiastic about her lack of understanding

Is there an upper limit to Rana’s upbeat attitude? I’m pretty sure the answer’s no. And doesn’t her smile look just like Cathy’s? Capture from the Blu Ray.

In West Genetics, Satellizer had just loaded up on hamburgers. Many other Pandora were speaking in hushed voices of the Nova incursion unfolding near East Genetics. Satellizer was on edge. She wanted to be in the fight. But not only was she at West Genetics. She was a second-year student. They rarely saw action.

She blew past Rana, who cheerfully wondered why Satellizer was even more brusque than usual. Chiffon overheard the question. Chiffon could barely understand the question.

“Do you not know what’s going on right now?” she asked, incredulous (18:32).

“Correct!” Rana said with all the enthusiasm that I’ve come to expect from her.

Favorite Moment from Freezing Episode 9

Freezing Episode 9: The devastation Cathy witnessed was far beyond her ability to process

Despite all her training, Cathy could only stare at the aftermath of the Nova’s attack. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Cool Tactics

About fourteen seconds. The time I’ve been giving out for quotes and moments is off by fourteen seconds. More precisely, it reflects the missing Funimation preamble that’s still part of Crunchyroll’s stream. I’ve been watching from my Blu Ray copy, which doesn’t have that preamble. So, if I say something happened at 18:32, it probably happened at 18:41. I’m going to stick with the Blu Ray version.

We got our first look at the response to a Nova incursion, and I have to say, I loved it. Yes, it had a higher PPM (panties per minute) rate than a real military action would have, but it’s part of Freezing’s DNA, so I expected it.

Freezing Episode 9: The Pandora had excellent tactics

The show gave an immersive sense of combat tactics. These are dedicated, soldiers. Capture from the Blu Ray.

I did not expect to see such cool tactics. First, we got a hint that there was a functioning world outside of the school campuses when we heard a coordinator say (15:17), “Chevalier Platoons 3, 7, and 8 have completed deployment.” Not “1, 2, and 3.” Not “are present.” That one sentence gave a sense of a a massive Chevalier organization; it gave a sense of protocols and methods involved in deploying a platoon. I appreciate that in a sci-fi like this.

Delivery: The Trauma of an Enemy’s Attack

Even better, they employed actual tactics when they attacked the Nova. Different Pandora and Limiters had different functions, and what they were doing made perfect sense. I love material like that. They didn’t just gloss over the heart of the series, which is the conflict with the Nova. They made it front and center.

For a show with such a high PPM, it goes hard with its violence. We didn’t get a sanitized version of what happened after the Nova unleashed its new beam. Cathy stared in immobilizing shock at the remains of dozens of Pandora. One young woman screamed (20:12), “My eyes!” That was a convincing depiction of the aftermath of an expected and devastating attack.

Freezing Episode 9: Despite their training, the Pandora were no match for the new, upgraded Pandora

This is one of the most tame examples of the Nova attack’s aftermath. Capture from the Blu Ray.

As Cathy continued to stare, as embers drifted across the screen, a senpai who had survived screamed into the radio (20:16), “Get the medics out here!” In response to an unheard question, she yelled, “How many? All of them!”

The panic. The mayhem. The devastation. That all worked for me. It drove home that the Nova are deadly. Add the other-worldly music that played every time they appeared on screen, and I have to say, I felt the threat of the Nova in a very personal way.

I’m not going to forget “my eyes!” any time soon, that’s for damned sure!
