Gate Thus The JSDF Fought There Episode 10 Review – Quick Summary
In Gate Thus the JSDF Fought There episode 10, “Despair and Hope,” a cell phone call interrupted Rory’s plans for some quiet time with Itami. The call’s timing seriously displeased Rory. What displeased Itami was the subject of the call. But before he could take any action, three covert military teams from three different countries converged on the hotel. Neither expected the others. Shocked, the teams from China, the United States, and Russia stood, frozen in a standoff. That is, until Rory decided to take matters into her own hands. Rory had never encountered assault rifles. Will they tilt the balance of power to the humans? Or is a demigoddess a demigoddess, regardless of what world she’s in?

Talk about two people who get each other! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
My favorite quote from this episode is an echo of my favorite moment from the previous episode. It shows just how well Itami and Risa know each other and how well they would get along — if they’d just get out of their own ways.
After escaping the hot springs hotel with their lives, they stopped at a convenience store. It was adorable how fascinating Lelei found the hot food vending machine. Likewise adorable was Tuka’s delighted reaction. Rory showed some curiosity, but I think the cell phone’s interruption still irked her. The three of them went into the convenience store to buy some snacks for their friends in the van.
While they were gone, Risa leaned forward to ask Itami a question. Actually, it was a question masquerading as an excuse to show how well she knew her ex-husband.
“A forest fairy, a demigoddess in black, and a clever enchantress, huh?” she said, looking at the store (09:48). “Which one’s your type? Appearance-wise, it’s the Elf girl. Personality-wise, the black goth girl. The one that makes you want to protect her is the platinum blonde girl.”
“You know me very well,” Itami said, resigned to the teasing he’d get from Kuribayashi and Tomita.
Risa and Itami are such a good fit! I know that sometimes circumstances intervene, but it’s still melancholy to see.
Best in Show Moment for Gate Thus The JSDF Fought There Episode 10
As her body ejected bloody bullets, Rory just stood there in the moonlight with a smile on her face. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Good Against Swords is One Thing…
Remember when we got to see Rory cut loose against the bandits back in episode 6? She took out their most powerful warrior with minimal effort. Then she took out dozens of soldiers with even greater ease. Even without Kuribayashi’s help (and it was great seeing the two bond over combat!), I’m pretty sure Rory could have taken them all out.
Laughing all the while.
In the back of my mind, I wondered. How would she fare against modern weaponry? Even the soldiers’ winged dragons and mightiest humans couldn’t stand up to even one shot from modern JSDF weapons. I wondered what would happen if those weapons were turned on Rory.
Not for a moment did I doubt her courage. I knew she’d charge right in. But did she comprehend the power of modern weaponry? Turns out that’s the wrong question. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
One of the things I like best about anime is that it gives me scenes that I just don’t get anywhere else. We’re used to seeing more outrageous scenes in movies like Thor and other movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Those movies are fun to watch, but they’ve always left me feeling unsatisfied. Characters like Doctor Strange and Black Widow have an appeal that I don’t want to downplay. But just as the MCU movies as a whole don’t feel satisfying, those characters also seem to be almost holding back — or maybe there’s something missing.
Neither the movies nor the characters really come out looking good when I compare them to a character like Rory.
Delivery: Good Against Assault Rifles is Another
I liked everything about her fight against the three covert operations teams. From her very, very polite greeting to the constant, delighted laughter as she slaughtered them with her pike, that was everything I look for in anime. There was Rory Mercury, Apostle of the Emroy, god of war and death, a demigoddess who delighted in her mission, just having a good time. While trained soldiers died.
She absolutely laid waste. Even modern assault rifles had no effect on her. We found out in my favorite moment why, but even point blank, the rounds those rifles fired didn’t even slow her down.
All the while, she wore a radiant smile. Death never looked so beautiful.
When she’d finished the massacre, she stood on top of a bounder in the middle of the koi pond. Her expression showed pure, satisfied bliss as the moonlight flowed over her. Her companions finally came out of the hotel and looked on the battlefield. The sight shocked even Kuribayashi.
When even Kuribayashi looked freaked out, you know some stuff went down. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Itami approached her. Wordlessly, he looked up at her form as bloody bullets fell from her body. Her smile didn’t fade as she said (06:14), “This body will regenerate no matter how bad the injury. Demigods don’t die. Rather… we CAN’T die.”
I had my answer. Modern assault rifles couldn’t even annoy our goth demigoddess. I don’t think I’ve even seen a more satisfying battle scene. But if I ever do, it’s better than even odds the source will be another anime.
What did you think of Rory’s solution to the traffic jam? What was our Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!
