Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 11 – Quick Summary

In Grisaia: Phantom Trigger episode 11, “The Right Choice,” the enemy fired their massive artillery and caused widespread devastation. Rena, cut off from her team, running low on ammunition, nevertheless continues her mission. How much longer can she keep going? Will she run out of ammo before she runs out of enemies? And will she ever be able to talk to Haruto Aoi again?

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 11: Touka is a pragmatic soul

I think Touka has a gift. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

My favorite characters have to be Touka and Megumi. In FPS games, I’ve gotten to the point where I prefer sniping. The frenetic action in a melee situation just doesn’t suit my reaction time anymore.

Their banter has also provided a framework for some of the most thoughtful expressions of the show’s themes. I’m bit on well-crafted thematics (as opposed to in-your-face preaching).

In this episode, Touka also showed that she has the ability to look on the bright side of a situation, even when the situation is decidedly not bright.

They were trying to retreat when they came under fire. Touka hurled Megumi to the ground and covered her. When Megumi tried to accept blame for their predicament, Touka waved that aside and tried to paint a rosy picture.

“We’re in a minefield,” she said (05;14). “Coming after us won’t be easy.”

Leaving won’t be easy, either! But I have to admit that Touka has a point.

Favorite Moment from Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 11

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 11: Touka, her foot on a landmine, took time to comfort Megumi

Touka was the one in danger – but she took the time to reassure Megumi! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m having a bit of a hard time picking a favorite moment this time. The show’s done a good job of conveying its messages about war. I also understand the role the children warrior played – they further emphasized just how villainous the villains are.

That said, I had to wonder – why didn’t the kids open fire on Megumi and Touka on sight? They had superior numbers. They apparently had more ammunition. I also didn’t understand why Touka chose that moment to step off the mine. If she was going to take her own life anyway, why not draw in some of the enemy so stepping off the mine would take some of them with her?

I’m sure there are answers. The Reddit thread (see below) mentioned that the manga had a more in depth explanation for what was going on, so maybe my concern was more for the way it was adapted than the story itself. In any event, I’m going to chose a moment where I think I understood Touka’s motivations – and could be impressed by her attitude.

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 11: Touka and Megumi were trapped behind enemy lines

They were trapped in a dangerous location. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

She and Megumi were trying to withdraw. They knew the area was mined; they were trying to be careful. But as they were carefully stepping through the underbrush, Touka felt a click beneath her sole.

Calmly, without any distress in her voice, she said (06:38), “Sorry, I think I stepped on a landmine.”

She might as well have been saying “Sorry, I ate the last donut.”

Megumi didn’t react well. So, her foot still on the mine, Touka began to dig around it with her knife so she’d have an idea of what kind of mine she was dealing with. She also had hte presence of mind to try to reassure Megumi, saying (08:15), “Even if a landmine goes off, you’ll only lose your legs. Seventy-percent of people survive.”

Touka gave me the sense that she wasn’t acting brave. This was just her reaction. Her calm under pressure  impressed me. Her ability to still think of Megumi’s mental state impressed me even more – enough to make this my favorite moment.
